Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 10: What's new?

Posted On: Mar. 12, 2009 9:59 AM EST By: TibMikeD 30 Comments

As we discussed last week, we’re going to continue rolling out new features for Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 10 as we are allowed.  This week’s blog is in conjunction with the EA SPORTS Season Opener event which is taking place in downtown San Francisco.  We wanted to keep everyone on the blogs up to speed with the information that’s being rolled out at the event.  You’ll read some stuff in the media about these features, but this is unfiltered and straight from the source.

The guys that were here for the Community Day were able to experience a lot of these features first hand, so I would invite them to be part of the ongoing conversation.

Talk to you soon,
Mike D.

Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 10 – New Features!

New!  -  USGA License
The U.S. Open is in the game!  For the first time in franchise history you’ll be able to play the authentic U.S. Open Championship.  Bethpage-Black is the site of this year’s Open, so the course and the officially licensed event will be featured in Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 10.  We’re taking this one step further in-game by creating U.S. Open style course conditions to help recreate one of the most challenging environments in all of golf.  Rough will be thicker, greens will be faster and fairways will be harder in order to more accurately recreate the feel of the U.S. Open Championship.

New!  -  In-Game Commentary
ESPN’s Scott Van Pelt will be joining the Golf Channel’s Kelly Tilghman in the booth this year to deliver the commentary in game.  We’ve also rewritten a bunch of the commentary script in order to give it a new sound and feel.

You may have already heard about this announcement through ESPN and other web sites, but if you haven’t…check it out.

New!  -  Precision Putter
In Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 10 we have created a new putting mechanic which is based on the idea of carrying a single-distance putter in your bag.  So what in the world does this mean?  Well, this new system will allow for an alternative to our classic putting mechanic, which allowed you to toggle through a variety of max distances.  This new putter will always maintain a single max distance, so it will be up to you to dial in the appropriate power and putting line on each shot.  A new on-screen Precision Putting Meter will help you during your backswing and follow-through to find the correct stroke…unless you are hardcore and turn the meter  off!

This putting mechanic has been an ask from you, the community, for some time now and we’re excited to be including it in this year’s game.

New!  -  Tournament Atmosphere
In order to increase the dramatic feel of tournament golf, we’ve added a number of new in-game elements to help bring the experience to life.

Broadcast style tournament intros will lead you into each tournament.  Kelly Tilghman will set the stage for each event as you get a first look at the day’s tournament leaderboard.  Remember, you won’t always be teeing off last in Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 10 tournaments, so this first view of the leaders will give you an idea of where you are teeing off in comparison to the rest of the field.

Per hole stats will fill you in on how the field is performing at each hole.  During the fly-by you’ll see the number of par’s, birdies, eagles and more that have been shot on that hole.  Just like in tournament golf, these stats will be reset per round of the tournament, so you can see how the same holes are playing based on that day’s course conditions.

Real-time scoring updates will keep you updated on the field’s progress during your  rounds.  These scoring updates will trigger while you play holes and the AI golfers move up along the leaderboard or make great shots.  As you hear the distant roar of the crowd an update banner will appear at the top of the screen to alert you on the movers and shakers.

This year we’ve also increased our crowd population on the courses in the game.  Our goal here is to more closely mimic the galleries seen in tournament golf.  You will notice this especially around the tee boxes and the greens.

New!  -  Dynamic Weather
Whether you set the in-game weather manually or let the game use its dynamic forecasting system, get ready for some rain in Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 10.  Our dynamic forecasting system will generate a unique weather pattern, allowing the conditions to change from hole to hole.  So you may start out with a sunny round and it could turn overcast or cloudy or it might even rain on you.  If it does end up raining during your round, you’ll have to take the ground soak into account while hitting shots, since the more it rains the more saturated the ground will get, slowing down the roll on your shots.

We’ve also teamed up with The Weather Channel to bring you live weather.  If you have a network connection, you will be able to set the game to pull the most recent liveTWC weather conditions between holes!

Don't forget to stop by the forums and let us know what you think of the blog.

Very very good stuff here Mike!  First off the combination of these new elements is going to add a sense of realism like we've never seen before in the game.  I just totally love the fact that the weather is going to affect the terrain like it should, especially the greens.

I'm a huge fan of the per-hole stats as well.  This will be a neat feature, especially when playing a round in a constant downpour to see how the rest of the field has been affected.

Definitely a big fan of Scott Van Pelt on his radio show with Mike Tirico and also as an anchor on Sportscenter.  Not only do I think he'll be a great announcer, but his sense of humor will most likely be fused into the game for some good laughs, especially when you shank a shot.

Thanks again for the info Mike!

Dang, this is some really neat stuff.  The new presentation items and dynamic weather are what I am looking forward to most from this blog.

  • JCauthen04 said March 12, 2009

Mike, I feel like I've been the poster boy of "single putter range" movement and it's great to see that it is at long last, a reality.  I'm further delighted to read that we'll have an option to turn off the putting meter.  I'm very anxious to see how this feels!

Dynamic weather and user selectable weather are both great additions.  This will add so much variety to the looks and the challenge of all the courses.

The tournament atmosphere definitely needed some life, and it sounds like you guys have done a lot in that regard.  I'm just wondering though, how will ties (playoffs) be resolved this year in season tournament play?

  • TonyTurbo78 said March 12, 2009

Awesome blog Mike confirming that you have included some of our most wanted additions into the TW series.  Dynamic weather in 2010 really sounds like it's going to be the jewel in the crown.  Also it's fantastic news to see you have completely changed the way we think about a putt.  So many of us complained how easy it was in previous versions on the putting greens, it should be interesting to see this side of things recieve a big shake up..after all you know what they say, drives for show putt for dough :-)  Like some of my friends have said to me today, "wish I had a time machine because I can't wait for TW 2010"  Thanks for the blog Mike, can't wait to get on those fairways.

  • yesrushdt said March 12, 2009

I'm all for this change to the more realistic precision putter.  This seems quite similar to the putting system in the PC versions. I was so used to that system and it was an annoyance adjusting to the Xbox 360 TW09 style.

  • Topher0820 said March 12, 2009

So excited about the putting system! Would it be possible for you guys to have all courses unlocked from the start?? It's just frustrating to have to play through so many little games just to play all of the courses I paid for on the disk.

  • dneum7@mac.com said March 12, 2009

Loving the new putting system and the dynamic weather. Also, can't argue with Van Pelt as a new commentator, he should provide some entertaining stuff.

  • bmedenwald said March 12, 2009

This all sounds pretty great.  What I'd love to see though out of Tiger 10 is co-op online foursomes and fourball.  If you allowed me and a partner to tee it up against two other guys in 18 holes of best ball or scramble (or even that one-ball mode), I'd plunk down my money faster than the greens at Pinehurst!

  • SSenator said March 12, 2009

Mike,Thanks for giving a listen and allowing the meter to be turned off if wanted.

Guess that chat we had paid off...lol.

The thing I'm looking forward to the most is the changing weather patterns. It really does add another aspect to the game.

  • BRARROW said March 13, 2009

How about a save anywhere or at least at the turn? Allow me to change my settings in career mode, since in 09 I had to make and stick with choices without having been able to play in career mode?

  • k2damoon said March 15, 2009

Yeah, sounds pretty good at this stage. One thing with dynamic weather, would that mean in a four ball or stroke game that all 4 players get the same weather, wind, etc? As some of this years game is because different players get different winds?

I have not heard much on distances yet, but sure hope the yardages go back to what TW08 was as this year is arcade stuff, driving and putting. It would be godd to see realistic yardages like the pro's. Been watching Doral CA Championships and hole 16 par 4, only 2% of golfers try for the green with gusty winds behind then, and most of the time land up parring the hole as near impossible. This year any hole 410 yds and less is makeable, either hole in one or eagle which is crazy.

Will there still be club tuner?

Daily tournaments, I heard something like 1 round only and we all get the same wind settings etc, is this correct?

It would also be nice to know if a 1mph wind plays or not, and sometimes a 6mph wind plays like a 8 and next time a 5 which is weird?

    Anyhow sounds promising.

  • TheORINAL kevie said March 16, 2009

Having just recently picked up 09 i've already come across some huge issues which im not sure why this wasnt addressed.

-Being able to choose to take a drop w/ penalty stroke.(My ball actually got stuck in the trunk of a tree and i couldnt take a drop so i ended up swinging away until getting the max stroke per hole thing.

-Being able to choose where to place the ball on the tee box to attack certain angles and maximize the use of the fairway or par 3.

-Also My big issue is with how you guys are determining out of bounds. I wish it was setup like it would be for the actual course. So if you hit to an adjacent hole to you can still play to your hole from that other fairway/rough/etc.

All in all its a great game im having a ton of fun with it even though i am a little behind.

  • Oblong said March 16, 2009

I'll take a stab at a few questions and I'm sure Mike will correct me if I'm wrong.

    * We were told that they fixed the wind bug so everyone playing together gets the same wind.  Now that may not be the case in the Daily as the Weather Channel could force a change on the settings during the course of the day.

    * Distances have been addressed (at least for tour mode, not sure if they did it with default(arcade) mode).  They realized gamers didn't like it which is why they released the powercap patch for TW09.

    *  Club tuner lives with improvements

    *  Daily Tournament settings are controlled on the server side, meaning they can mix up settings as they see fit.  I think you'll see a variety of options and see how the feedback is on each.

    *  As for playing into other fairways instead of calling it OB...would you like load times to go from 5 seconds to 15 seconds for each hole?  Not me!  Keep your shots on the fairway and take your lumps when you don't.  JMHO.

  • k2damoon said March 17, 2009

tks man for the feed back, I guess seeing is believing, fingers crossed

  • hieland soldier said March 17, 2009

oblong you say you want a game more like a sim but you don`t want to play from other fairways because of load times guess what it`s an arcade game you want not a SIM

  • EAcom Golf Tim said March 17, 2009

Funny, that isn't what I got out of Oblong's comments. I can tell you for a FACT that he does not want an arcade game (many of us do not) ...we already have that in 09.....

  • JCauthen04 said March 17, 2009

I'm interested in learning what more can be done to enhance the Daily Tournament, now that we've learned that it is being controlled on the server side.  Could that mean a real time leaderboard update between holes?  That would be a real boost in making the Daily Tournament rounds seem "live".

  • TibMikeD said March 18, 2009

    Hey guys,

We'll be releasing all of our Daily Tournament information down the road.  Until then all I can tell you is that we are listening to the feedback you all have provided us and that we are doing alot of work on this area of the game.  I'm looking forward to sharing all the details with you.

The club distances have been been adjusted for 2010, mainly on the top end and mostly on the driver.

Club Tuner is definately still in the game.  :)

  • hieland soldier said March 18, 2009

i hope in this years you can tune individual clubs

  • hieland soldier said March 20, 2009

well i`ve looked at all the videos and can`t see a ball lie indicator in any of them guess it`s not in this years game, well more of is this ball going to come out straight or not again

  • EAcom Golf Tim said March 20, 2009

You can use the camera Right Bumper) in TW09 to get a better idea of your lie. I do agree that it could be improved though....

  • Tap-4Eagle said March 21, 2009

I believe the glitches and bugs of Tiger 09 PS3 are a side effect of an interaction between the Tiger09 software update in September of 08 and Sony’s latest 2.50 & 2.52 firmware revisions.

I say this because when Tiger 09 PS3 was released, I played the game for 8 hours a day for 3 weeks with no problems. I did not start having problems(freeze ups, glitches) until after the updates.

I know this is a known problem for other games and the companies of these games have found the problem and are working to correct it.

I HOPE THIS INFORMATION HELPS EA WITH TIGER 2010.

This is a letter from one of those companies....

    "Hi everyone,

I wanted to give you a quick update to a situation that we are aware of and are actively investigating.

Some of you may be having issues with your PLAYSTATION 3 versions of Call of Duty: World at War, whereby at the end of a game you are being disconnected from the party or service, and have to start matchmaking all over again. We understand how frustrating this may be.

This appears to be a side effect of an interaction between the game and Sony’s latest 2.50 & 2.52 firmware revisions which you likely downloaded as a routine system update. We are working closely with SCE to find a solution.

We apologize for any inconvenience this has caused, and will keep you updated as we learn more."

this is a great list of "what's new".  as a new comer/rookie to the TW series of games, I fell in love with the feature that allows a player to upload a picture of his/her own face.  Sure it took 40 minutes to render it, but it still makes me feel that I'm in the game a little bit more.

(ohh, what it'd be like to strike a ball 300 yds at Pebble Beach. zzz zzz zzz)

Great feature, I hope it stays in TW 2010 and beyond.

  • joshual said May 15, 2009

Hi, will multiplayer be an option for tournament play (not online)?

  • Spectacle94 said June 25, 2009

game freezes in career mode all the time....pretty much unplayable.  How could this of happened? doesn't EA test for something like that before a release? Just Awful.
