NCAA Football 10 Community Day: A new approach

Posted On: Mar. 16, 2009 2:37 PM EST By: raczilla 38 Comments

If you've been following the online community for EA SPORTS titles over the last few years, you're probably familiar with the concept of a community event.  Recently on the Inside Blog we've featured coverage of both a Wii community event at our EA SPORTS Season Opener and our Fight NIght Round 4 Community Day.  This Friday, March 20th, we'll be hosting our NCAA Football 10 community day here at the Tiburon studio where the game is currently in development.  I'd like to share with you some of the history of community days and why this event will be different, and why it will be a great improvement over what we've done in the past.

A brief history of EA SPORTS community events

Before coming to work for EA SPORTS I worked on a Madden NFL and NCAA Football fan site called Madden Nation.  I was fortunate enough to be one of the first community leaders to attend the early EA SPORTS events which started back with the '05 football products.  Back then a community day meant coming out to the studio and playing the finished product a couple of weeks before the game shipped.  This served a couple of different purposes.  It was a reward for some of the biggest community contributors but was also a way for us to get some information about the games to people who visited our sites.  We all felt like this was a great step by EA SPORTS to reach out to fans and for a couple of years this was the model for these kinds of events.

I came to EA Tiburon in the fall of 2006 and was fortunate enough a few months later to organize the first ever community event for NCAA Football.  The big feedback coming out of that event was that our attendees loved the opportunity to check out the game, but that they'd love to visit us earlier in the year when they could give us some feedback while the title was still in development.  Since then it's been our priority to move community day events earlier in the year.  This product cycle I'm happy to report that all of our community events are at a point in development where our attendees' feedback can help make sure our games are tuned to the liking of the community.

What's on tap for NCAA Football 10 community day?

On Friday when our community day attendees come to the Tiburon studio, they'll spend the day going through the features of NCAA Football 10 and giving the development team direct feedback on the game.  In fact, we're so early in the year that our attendees won't be able to talk about most of what they will see and won't have detailed previews of the game immediately after community day wraps up.  Instead of using the community day as a means of getting news out about the game, we've shifted 100% of the focus toward making sure our attendees can help impact the quality of the product.

Why tell you about the event if you won't hear a lot about the game features?  Good question.  Even though we're not quite ready to open the floodgates of information and tell you everything about NCAA Football 10, we do want you to know that we're taking a lot of care in developing the game.  We are taking the quality of our games to new heights by involving the community early on.  You've seen some examples of this with our producer involvement on the forums and here on the Inside EA SPORTS Blog and this Friday's NCAA Football 10 Community Day is another step towards making sure we involve the community every step of the way.  And while you may not learn all of the NCAA 10 features this Friday, you will get an inside look at the community day.

What kind of coverage can you expect to see on the Inside EA SPORTS Blog?

We're going to keep you up to date through the week and during the event on Friday.  Here's what you will find this week on the Inside Blog:

Wednesday

Bios of our community day attendees and their backgrounds with the NCAA Football series.

Thursday

A video sharing our vision for NCAA Football 10 community day and what we hope to accomplish.

Friday

- Pictures and video on the blog, live from the community day event

- Live community day coverage on my Twitter feed.

I hope you'll follow the event here on the blog as well as our official event discussion thread on the EA SPORTS NCAA Football 10 forums.

HERES SOME MINOR IDEAS THAT WILL MAKE THE GAME MORE DETAILED

1)BRING BACK THE APARTMENT ON SUPERSTAR MODE

    2) THE PLAYER SHOULD BE IN HOUSES OR APARTMENTS DEPENDING ON THEIR CONTRACT

    3) WHEN U MAKE A STADIUM PLZ ALLOW US TO MAKE LUXURY BOXES ALL AROUND THE STADIUM AND BE ABLE TO CHOOSE HOW MANY LEVELS.

4)ALLOW US TO CHOOSE THE KIND OF LUXURY SUITES, PRESS,OUTDOOR, CLUB,OR SEATS.

I JUST SAW THAT PIC UP THERE IT DIDINT' LOOK LIKE U USED TEXTURERS FOR THE SUITES BUT STILL CAN U JUST MAKE THE SUITES CLEAR TO A POINT WHERE U CAN SEE PEOPLE THATS THE ONLY THING WRONG WITH THE GRAPHICS.

    5) IT SORTA LOOKS FAKE I SHOULD BE ABLE TO SEE FOOD STANDS LIKE I SEE IN NHL OR NBA LIVE, ALSO PEOPLE SHOULD BE WALKING AROUND THE STADIUM LIKE THEY ARE HETING SOMETHING TO EAT OR THE BATHROOM,

    6) fix the bears stadium it looks unreal.

    7) i cant stress this enougth STOP using textures for luxery suites just make them clear and make sure its really detailed on the inside.

    8) WHY no WR reverses or RB/WR throws i miss them.

these are things to make the already good graphics way better PLEASE READ.

    srry no one will listen

you guys need to step up to the plate.  The weekly madden updates, while not overly mind blowing, are putting NCAA Football 10's updates to shame.  Come-on now do you really think field goal nets and goal post socks are what gamers really care about.  We want NCAA 10 to compete with Madden as far as game play improvements and player model upgrades.  To this point NCAA 10 is not in the same stratisphere as Madden 10.

  • raczilla said March 16, 2009

    Ronny,

Thanks for the feedback.  We've still got a long way to go in terms of the information that will be shared.  I think as we move forward you'll find that NCAA also has a great plan this year.

  • Leyland said March 16, 2009

If anyone on the Madden team wants to crush Ncaa thats sad

i always hoped your teams worked together

right now it all sounds like b.s

ncaa always seems better than madden in all aspects anyways

    im sure that wont change

  • Timmybuk2 said March 17, 2009

Realistically, 09 was awesome and needs a couple of improvements.

    #1 - fix promises

#2 - fix sway player to stay.

Those in my opinon should be primary. after that, its all candy. ;)

  • deusmortuus said March 17, 2009

I'm glad you all are doing this.  Wish there was a way that people like us halfway across the country could give that kind of feedback, but simple logistics answers why that isn't a possibility.  I just hope that the people there will give the kind of feedback I would give.  This update has made me really look forward to Friday.  Hopefully we at least will get a few updates on gameplay.  Again, wish I could be there.

  • youngj20007 said March 17, 2009

u dont want to open up the flood gates of information well i tell you this if we dont see a couple of major improvements like were seeing with madden then there might be a lot of a people switching to madden i have yet to see a improvemnet besides the very first one about PA that people actually care about please go thro the blogs and look at wat people are writing thats the least you could do people taking there time to write u guys and let u kno wat they think make this game better and most of its same like create a school once a gain create school better presentation pre and post game shows team specific entrance better create a player options towel more cleats and gloves and faces and gameplay (defense sucks ass even with a 99 defense i had a 75 off team able to keep up with me) if you are working on these things atleast let us no

  • deusmortuus said March 17, 2009

Also, I'm curious as to why you all are keeping such tight wraps on features and gameplay changes since you're the only NCAA Football game on the market, and your only real football competition right now is Madden, another EA product.  Keeping hype up for the product seems kind of ridiculous, too; since a lot of people don't really keep up with this stuff.  A majority of people who are going to buy this game already know they're going to buy it and know roughly when it's going to come out because they buy it every year, or at least consider buying it every year (I stopped buying every iteration when I realized that such minor improvements were being made that it wasn't worth it to shell out $50+ every year for practically the same game with roster updates, not even entirely accurate, and a few new gimmicks).  Why not let us know what work you are doing and then show us how that work has been put in action every week in your updates section rather than feeding the small group of us that are rabidly following everything a minor tidbit every week?  Thanks.

  • raczilla said March 17, 2009

Deus, That's a good question.  If you look at our approach in the past, this is actually the earliest we've been out talking about the finer details of NCAA Football.  Last year it wasn't until early April that we started putting out this kind of direct information from the team.

This really isn't about keeping up hype but about keeping the community involved in the year round process with our games.  That's something the NCAA Football community has been vocal about in recent years, so we want to do what we can to keep people involved.

It's still fairly early on so we've got a ways to go before the game is available.  I think by the time NCAA Football 10 is in stores in July, you'll feel like you've been well informed and kept in the loop throughout the year on what we're doing with the game.

I hope you'll keep following the blog and we'll continue to exchange thoughts on this as we move closer to July.

  • bangpow said March 17, 2009

Rac, would it also be safe to say that even now some features are still being ironed out?  Like, is the feature set even finalized?

  • bangpow said March 17, 2009

Oh, and honestly, I like the info that is coming out right now.  It's not about gameplay or anything, but hearing about some of the new visual features as well as some of the things that may be overlooked if they weren't pointed out are a nice touch this early in the season.

  • Respun said March 17, 2009

I was wondering if you guys were going to come out with a Wii version of the game this year or if you were going to scrap it after how last year's version turned out. I haven't heard anything yet...

  • youngmeech said March 17, 2009

how hard could it be to make more varieties of cleats, theirs tons of cleats out that u can use for models same with gloves, also the update in under armour and how u can just have one sleeve on ur arm, also with wristbands to apply them on ur arm or legs u could use a setting to place them sorta like nba live, to me i just don't get it u know us the players wanna see this but, yet u still year in and year out don't put these small minor details in the game and it doesn't seem like it could be that hard because u already have some of that stuff in the game go an extra mile. This is next gen but, yet on nfl fever, you could have towels, you could place wristbands on ur legs, u could have the hand warmers. Im gettin suck of seein the same shoe models, and i believe ea needs 2 fix the spat models and the mid sock length it should be longer seems kinda short, all complaints aside i really enjoyed ncaa 2009 last year and if 10 is gonna make any of the adjustments madden has seems like it will be a better game

  • rockchalk75-68 said March 17, 2009

NCAA 10 how the campus star mode you start in the high school playoffs you should be able to sim those games.  Also they should make a coaching mode where you start in the high school playoffs also and be able to get a contract to an NCAA.  Then turn the coaching mode into a dynasty, but only to the schools your coach gets an offer.

  • qmoney06 said March 17, 2009

It'd be nice to at least allow Campus Legend players to transfer schools while their in college within their 4 years of eligibility.  That shouldn't be too much space on the disc to add.

  • Wallyhockey17 said March 17, 2009

All I can say is that if FCS schools and create a schools aren't added, this might be the first time I skip on buying NCAA

  • raczilla said March 17, 2009

Bangpow, the game is featured locked, so all of the attendees will have an opportunity to see everything that's going in.

  • deusmortuus said March 17, 2009

Hey rac, there is no doubt that I'll keep up with the blogs and forums as much as possible.  I love the NCAA series, as a die-hard Husker fan, I could care less about the Madden series.  Here's a suggestion for a blog post, though: would it be possible to get some info on how the roster-building and rating process works on NCAA Football?  When do your rosters get finalized?  How do you decide who has a high rating in a certain area, especially when they haven't played a down or very few downs of actual college football yet?  I'm kind of asking because some position changes that had come about for the Huskers in spring drills weren't reflected in the rosters on 09, and I'm sure this was the case with other teams as well.  Just another cool thing to know about your process.  Thanks a lot.

  • cutigers128 said March 17, 2009

Raczilla, i am a big Clemson fan and i was wondering if you have started to make the alternate uniforms yet, if so could you tell me the clemson ones i think they should get all white and all orange for alternates. Thanks

  • buckswr7 said March 17, 2009

Raczilla, if you have seen my other posts on here you should know that ive been pushing for the pre game warmups and post game and when the qb takes the knee and when they douse the coach with gatorade and player models accessories like towels on either the left or right hip or front and hand warmers when its cold and just one sleeve like zac robinson of oklahoma state has. and new cleats like UA and the new nikes. Also more animations, and the new ion helmets so im really set on the equipment/accessories/animation side of the game. Also get like in a spread offense when EX. oklahoma state looks to the sideline after they fake the snap to see if the coach wants to change the play i would like to see that in that game. and the new jerseys like arkansas new jerseys and oregons all white. and i would like to see name brand gloves. so please get these in the game. and update us more on the equipment/accessories/animation side of NCAA 10!

  • NextGenGamer24 said March 17, 2009

I think NCAA 10 will be a good game.Hopefully you guys added trophies to the PS3 version of the game like you`re doing with Madden.

  • deusmortuus said March 17, 2009

buckswr7 brings up a great point.  There are offenses being run that don't use the standard huddle formation.  Considering how badly no huddle runs on 09 (players do not really show much urgency in running up to the line, I can remember a number of games lost due to the slowness of the 2-minute drill in 09), there need to be some major changes done to be able to even consider implementing these types of offenses in the game, but a number of offenses seem to be going this way.  This necessitates a retooling of the standard way of playcalling.  The strategy on defense should be different against a team that runs this type of offense.  Maybe the best option for this is a retooling of the audible system to allow even more plays to be called from it.  Seriously look at teams like Okie State and, I believe, Oklahoma to see this type of offense in action.  I'd love it if you could simulate something like that...

  • gatorfanatic said March 17, 2009

i agree with deusmortuus that most of the teams in NCAA are going to that form of no huddle offense. But to really get a good look at it look at Missouri or Texas Tech because they are in shotgun 90% of the time and they usually look to hard count look to the sideline get a new play and then run it. Also with the roster updates are you guys going to make it similar to Maddens' roster updates or no. Because the way Madden is doing it makes the defense a lot better. For ex. on Madden their WRs speed ranges from like 70-100 and DBs speed range from like 69-99, and the WRs route running ability ranges from like 65-100 and DBs coverage is from like 65-99 or something like that. Say that they have a receiver who has like a 95 speed and is route running is 80. If I have a corner who's speed is 85 and coverage ability is like 96 that rating gives the DB a better chance at staying with the WR when ever they run their routes because they don't have that great of route running abilities. I like that aspect a lot because it gives the defense a chance and in NCAA Football 09 the defense was horrible(no offense). Something needs to be done about the defensive side of the ball. Plus they must be more aware of their surroundings and utilize that to their advantage.

    Thanks for listening..

P.S. can't wait to for the community day and like deusmortuus i wish i could go to it

  • deusmortuus said March 18, 2009

Thanks for the correction on teams, gatorfanatic.  I just know that it was teams that beat my boys this past season.  I think Kansas also runs an offense like it.  I would really like a bit more ability to change defensive packages on the fly and make sure that I can have defensive matchups against teams to keep their star players from somehow getting into man with my 3rd string DB...

  • tugboat211978 said March 18, 2009

I have a good suggestion that would make this game better and alot more real and fun. It has to do with substitution, if you could make a way that you could sub players for any position with out haveing to pause the game, like if you call a time out you could sub a DL or DB or LB and if you could sub any player from the play calling menu. I like to sub in fresh DL through out the game and its a pain having to push pause go to the sub menu find the guy sub him then go back to the game. It would be alot more fun to be able sub all players with out pauseing the game some of the games you can sub like a combo of players from the play call menu we need to step up to more realistic subing. Maybe even as your calling the play it could show your sub comeing on the field and to take a big step maybe have a time limit and if your to slow and your sub dont get off the field in time you could get a 12 men on the field penalty that would be cool. Well thats all i have i hope people read this and get the word out it would be a nice step to the game. Thanks

Should bring back where the reciever can turn arond using the L trigger because the defensive player can

  • stxplayer2007 said March 18, 2009

Please bring back Creat-a-team mode. I enjoy sitting down and creating my team from high school with all the matching names, numbers, equipment, and accessories. Its one of the reasons I keep buying the game.

  • ThunndaKat said March 18, 2009

Seriously, field goal nets and referees would be a great addition to the game. Also, adding a side view gameplay camera would be a much needed implementation as well. I, for one know many, many people that hate the current vertical camera views. We need more options there. I don't want to bring 2k Sports into this, but I have to. They pretty much give you the goods each year in there games.

I agree with a top poster. It's time to step up your game. I do like what I see so far though.

I wish in 2010 EA would go in to more detail with mascots and team entrances how cool would it be having Cheif Osceola Plant the Flaming spear and clemson touch the rock and run down the hill. The Tennessee "T" The Michigan Banner. Maryland rub the Illibuck. Purdue and the Boilermaker Express. Just try to put a little more detail into the entrances..... PLEASE

  • Bolt957 said March 18, 2009

raczilla, I have a question. Will EA Sports have create a team on the PS3 and 360 versions of NCAA Football 10? Plus, will you be including the FCS teams? The reason for these two questions is because they have been included and important every since NCAA Football 2000. Create a team is important because since custom conferences are back; sometimes it gets boring after doing Dynasty for a while, we need something else besides the mini-games. Plus we must have our own schools to create history with and win National Championships with. Please design the create a team like Madden, but with a collegiate spin with it. Then, you could have premade designs from Nike, UnderArmour, Adidas, and Russell for uniforms and the patch of the company could be sewed onto the uniforms, or we can create our own uniforms and put the company on there. Maybe even have it made where the school's name or the nickname is on the front of the jersey. FCS teams are important; one thing to say is, Appalachian State goes into Michigan Stadium and upsets Michigan on a blocked field goal. Nothing left to say.

    -God Bless

I think the game is great! I would like all alternative uniforms, dirty and muddy players(depending on condition) along with messed up feild. Last but not least... I would love for the lighting and weather conditions to change thru out the game as each quarter passes, wether playing 1-15 min qtrs. Just think of a game that starts at 2:30 Eastern time in the fall. Its sunny and bright. But by the fourth quarter the sun is almost gone! Thank you for your time!
