NCAA Football 10 Community Day: Our thoughts heading into the event

Posted On: Mar. 19, 2009 10:04 AM EST By: raczilla 30 Comments

NCAA Football 10 community day is taking place at the EA SPORTS Tiburon studio on Friday, March 20th.  We'll be following the event throughout the course of the day, and throughout this week.  Click here for more information on the event, including a preview of what you'll see here on the Inside EA SPORTS Blog.

With our new approach to this year's NCAA Football 10 Community Day, I sat down with NCAA Football 10 producer Ben Haumiller to share our thoughts about past events, how we choose attendees to come to a community event, and what you can expect to see here on the Inside EA SPORTS Blog tomorrow.  See all of that and more in the videos below.

NCAA Football 10 is a strong "NO" buy.  I have yet to see a single quality upgrade to this point and the first look picture of the player models shows zero improvment.  Way to waste a community day on such a lackluster game.  I thought by now NCAA Football 10 would be on par with Madden 09 atleast.  I'm also sad to see no towels yet again on the players uniforms.  What a bummer

  • Nash9233 said March 19, 2009

I like how most of the new updates for Madden 10 are being included into NCAA 10 this year.  I'm still holding out for my Create-A-School, though.

  • raczilla said March 19, 2009

Ronny, I can appreciate that you're anxious to see more than what we've shown already and believe me, we're just as anxious to show you more of what the team has been working on.  We've got a long way to go before all of the details of NCAA Football 10 are released.

Right now what you're seeing are a lot of "work in progress" updates from the team.  As we move closer to the launch you'll absolutely see the level of polish you'd hope and expect from NCAA Football 10.  We have some very big things ahead in terms of what we share here on the blog.  We're just not quite ready to show them yet.

The community day is a great opportunity because we're bringing in people to see the game and interact with the teams while it's still in development.  It's not a waste but a great way for us to hear some opinions from hardcore fans just like you about what we can tune to make sure NCAA Football 10 is on the right track.

Keep following us here on the blog and keep giving us feedback about what you're seeing.  And make sure you're very specific about what you think and want for the game.  We read the comments every day and care very much about what you want to see in our game.

  • IndyColts2 said March 19, 2009

With no disrespect raczilla, I just want to know how bringing in only 7 people is going to give you guys "direct" feedback from the community. It is just a couple of people that have their own opinions of the game. I'm just saying that if you want "direct" feedback from the "community" then have atleast 100 people who aren't well-known people, but are still hardcore fans of NCAA.

Also, I understand that you guys can't just blurt out all the info on the game, but how long are you going to wait to show something?? Both teams say they are holding the "big" features for later yet Madden has released some of the biggest features it has ever released these pass seven weeks. If those are only small features then I can't wait for Madden. As for NCAA, it only has shown some small things that don't even make the game a whole lot better because they aren't fully made and they aren't complemented with other things that should be in the game but aren't (at the moment). The field goal net is a great thing to put back in but it isn't even supported by anything in the picture, it is just suspended in mid-air. Camera flashes aren't that big especially since you don't see a camera flash in a day game on every kick-off during the regular season. Windsocks is a nice tiny feature, ok. Super-sim doesn't need to be "on the field" but oh well, the only good thing improved with that is skip play for CL. If refs and chaingang and a lot more cheerleaders (there isn't only 1 group of cheerleaders on 1 side of the field at a game) were in then it would make the presentation that much better. Also, an improved sideline would make it better too. Other than that their isn't anything that big that NCAA has announced. Yea they have implemented the WR/DB interactions and a few others Madden has announced but there isn't anything that makes anybody say "wow" yet like Madden has. I don't know, I can't wait for Madden, and because of what has been released I can't say the same for NCAA right now.

Oh yea, one more thing. What were you guys taking when you decided to make an "All-New Season Showdown" feature?? First, it isn't even a feature from what I've read, it's more of a gimmick for people to buy the game. Second, it isn't even in the game really, people who don't have the game can do challenges on the website to help show their school pride or some crap like that?? What the heck is that? Nobody wants to do mini-games to show that their school is the best. Don't you realize that a school shows that they are the best by WINNING GAMES, not by having their fans play games on the computer. This is why we are all doubting NCAA right now, because of crap features like these. Hopefully you guys are true to your word unlike the past years and are really holding great features, if not, I'm sure that you will see a drop in sales this year.

    Yes sir, raczilla! It's showtime.

  • Spartan117 said March 19, 2009

you tell him indycolts. I'm tired of these nextgen football games being so boring after a couple of hours. ea you got the license to college and nfl and your just wasting it to make these pathetic games. i loved the lastgen games i colud  play them for months and it will still be fun. step your game up ea. we have no other choice since you have the license for everything.

  • jumpoff47 said March 19, 2009

My thing is this Im glad to see the game is moving forward in the rite direction.  I am someone who loves small details.  I really would love to see those looked over details added.  For me things like different styles of cleats, USC having white laces in black cleats, towels on players is long over do, Having the ability to have a sleeve on one arm and not the other, hand warmers, A BAND in the stadium which is also long over do, coaches that interact by walking up and down the side line etc... and last but not least CREATE A SCHOOL which is also long over do on next gen ....

  • IndyColts2 said March 19, 2009

Thanks Spartan117. Jumpoff47, I agree with you, I am not saying don't put in small details, I'm saying if you ARE going to, then put them ALL in. Don't add a few here and there and expect everything to be fine and dandy. They can go and do that and say "Ooo look at those details, we did a great job." That doesn't mean they don't have plenty of other stuff to look at. I usually don't say forget about small details and think about the big picture, but if they don't put in the refs and chaingang and an ACTUAL ESPN, ESPN on ABC presentation then there is no point in having it. If you can take the time to put in some (even though they aren't even properly done) then make some more time to put it all in. I LOVE having full customization because one of the first things I do when I get Madden or NCAA is create a player. I wish they would add create a school back in (I personally think they did with the custom conference and everything) because it was such a big part of having a fun dynasty in last gen. Being able to create your high school with all the players on it and then playing as your team in a dynasty is sick! But why not have the whole package?

Madden is looking AMAZING right now, and we haven't seen any gameplay, pictures and videos, OR Franchise mode features. I can't say that about NCAA because they waisted 3 weeks on things they could have put together in 1 blog. I can't tell if they are going to make a good game because the pictures they show us look like crap. The players look horrible, even though it is WIP, but still. If you can have a WIP picture look sick, and it isn't even fully done, then the real thing must be AMAZING. But when the WIP pic looks garbage, then what can we expect of the real thing? That's my point, right there, I found the words.

If the WIP and first few blogs look like crap, then what is there to look forward to?

  • buckswr7 said March 19, 2009

i really dont think these player models your seeing are gonna be the ones in the game. i mean seriously its almost 4 months until the game is released so they probably are just getting some gameplay style stuff down right now then gonna make the new player accessories, cleats, and helmets like i have been pushing for! Also i really agree with pharaoh_00 that there should be running styles and trowing styles. also i have said this before but i would like if you put in where ex. the oklahoma state cowboys look to the sideline after faking the snap to see if the coach wants to change the play this is how my high school team runs our O. Im the wide receiver and i change the plays cuz our QB doesn't know all the audibles to i would like to see either the QB or one of the WRs changing the play if the coach wants to and to see what play they want u to change it to a little box should show up at the top left hand corner showing the play name like in ncaa basketball 09 when the coach tells the team what to do. also i have said this a million times that i would like the new accessories like towels, one-sleeved under armour, wand warmers, the new cleats like the nike vapor jet 4.2 (which i wear) and the new ion helmets.

  • Leyland said March 19, 2009

i dont know about you guys but i cant wait for the wand warmers

  • oldsauce40 said March 19, 2009

NO DISRESPECT BUT I BET THOSE LUCKY SEVEN DON'T KNOW NOTHING ABOUT VIDEO GAMES THEY ARE YOUNG TEENAGERS THAT GOT A FREE PASS TO GET OUT OF CLASS.I DON'T TRUST EA NO MORE THEY LET US DOWN EVERY YEAR!THE ONLY GAME I SAW SO FAR IS FIGHT NIGHT 4 I THINK THAT GAME IS GOING TO BE A BLOCKBUSTER! THE SIMPLE FACT IS THAT THEY PAID ATTENTION TO DETAIL AND DON'T LOOK THE SAME BECAUSE THEY GOT RID OF THE GAME ENGINE FROM FIGHT NIGHT 3. I HOPE THE OTHER DEVELOPMENT TEAM'S TOOK A PAGE FROM THEM BUILDING A NEW GAME INSTEAD WHAT WE SEE EVERY YEAR THE SAME OLD THING!!!!!!!!!

  • pharaoh_00 said March 19, 2009

Sounds good raczilla, cant wait to see more, give it time people.

  • NELL86 said March 20, 2009

I hope they doing everything madden doing this year cuz if not its a no buy for me

  • deusmortuus said March 20, 2009

Woah oldsauce, I think you should go look back at those bios.  I think most if not all of them are already out of college.

Will, I really appreciate what you guys are trying to accomplish with community day, and maybe logistics didn't allow you to have more than the 7 guys you are having, so that's okay.  I think some of those guys have been pretty vocal about stuff that a lot of us have already been asking for.  The only problem I see is that it's just a day and some features can't truly be tested until you've had a while to play through it.  What about recruiting and dynasty features?  Are they really going to have a chance to try that out much?  I suppose you could sim the season and only do recruiting...  but even that can take up quite a bit of time unless you've streamlined recruiting somehow this year.  Are you looking for most of your feedback to be about the gameplay then?  Also, I'm going to have to admit that it's hard to give constructive feedback when we have no idea what features are slated to be in the game.  Until we know, we're only going to be able to toss out detail features we want to see and gameplay from 09 we wanted fixed, even though unbeknownst to us, they may already be implemented and/or fixed.

Last point: I have to agree that it would be really nice to see a further implementation of the ESPN/ABC license.  I still think that one more reporting crew would be a nice addition if possible, but can understand if it isn't.  I would much rather have a game that plays great.  I know you guys probably can't confirm this, but I'm assuming with the plans to upgrade easportworld and your customized avatar, that there will be something implemented into the game to use your avatar as a coach?  It would be kind of cool to see myself on the sidelines, but it would be even cooler if we had some actual coaches on the sidelines, too.  Just saying...

  • stephandbrian@cox.net said March 20, 2009

Holy crap!  What a bunch of whiny babies we got here!  Geez!

If any of you have paid attention to any of this crap, there's only 2 features that Madden has that NCAA is not getting:  extended QB ratings and the matchup screen....everything else is the exact same engine.  The NCAA team has said time & time again that although they have the same gameplay updates as Madden, they are not going to blog about the same ones.  Thus, that's why we are getting announcements about camera angles and customized conferences.  So, everyone needs to calm down & just be excited about the news.  There's a lot of software companies that don't allow you to see features this far in advance.  This is a huge change for EA and we should be happy to see what we have seen.

  • deusmortuus said March 20, 2009

Hey beeneeb, just wondering if we could get a link to where they talk about that?  Is it on the forums because I haven't seen that on the blog.  The only thing I've seen on the blog saying they have a Madden feature implemented in their game is for the head-tracking software.  Maybe I missed it, so I'd appreciate seeing where they wrote that.  I agree that EA seems to be ahead of the curve in community involvement in the development of their software, and I really appreciate it.  I just feel we could be more helpful if we weren't taking stabs in the dark sometimes with our suggestions...

  • stephandbrian@cox.net said March 20, 2009

    Hey deusmortuus,

I have everything documented and sourced on my blog site.  I can't put the URL, but search ncaafootballfreak in Google and you'll find my site.  Every time that something was confirmed in both Madden and NCAA, I documented it.

  • Dewiel said March 20, 2009

IndyColts2, thanks for the feedback. With community days, we are limited on the number of people that we can bring in, but these guys represent many members of their own communities. Most of the guys bring along lists of questions, complaints, and overall comments from their communities and the overall community in general to ask the dev team. If you have any specific questions that you would like to have answered, please post them in as much detail here in the comments section.

  • Dewiel said March 20, 2009

Spartan117, what are some of the specific things that you would like to see added to the game?

  • Dewiel said March 20, 2009

jumpoff47, Thanks for the post! Are there any other things that you would like to see added?

  • Dewiel said March 20, 2009

oldsauce40, the guys who are at the Community Day today have years of experience with NCAA Football. Check out the following post from Raczilla where he wrote a bio on each of the guys: insideblog.easports.com/.../ncaa-football-10-community-day-who-will-be-there.aspx. What are some of the specific things that you would like to see out of this event?

  • deusmortuus said March 20, 2009

Thanks beeneeb, that's a bit reassuring to know that.  I feel a little bit better about how the gameplay will shape up already.

Dewiel, I'm curious as to what changes are being made or are planned to be made in the atmosphere of the game.  I posted in another blog here that it would be nice to see a difference between regular-season and rivalry games (e.g. the crowd reacts more to play on the field, maybe players get a little pushy and draw penalties, etc.).  Also, as mentioned in another post, could we see a cleaner recruiting system, maybe even making it clearer as to how players are reacting while being talked to rather than seeing them suddenly go from smiley to angry when talking about something they love.  And please please please have the players leaving glitch fixed... and don't make a star player transfer to a lower team even when I fulfill my promises...

  • deusmortuus said March 20, 2009

Hey beeneeb, just went through some of your posts.  I agree that something needs to be done to prevent the same play from being called all the time.  Especially with trick plays, it should become harder and harder to run the same play all the time unless you put some time between the calls.  It's how the human mind works: once it's primed for a certain set of symbols, they can perform better when the same symbols are presented, but if you put time in between, their reactions will eventually return to normal levels.  Therefore, something like player awareness for a particular play should be increased for a while and slowly decrease back to norm levels after a certain amount of time.  Maybe this will keep people away from repetitive play-calling... maybe not.

  • deusmortuus said March 20, 2009

By that same line of thinking, they should be more easily tricked by a fake on a play that looks exactly like it...  Until we can integrate player/team tendencies into the awareness factor, meaning players learn from how those teams/players played in the past, this is likely the best thing to do...

  • jumpoff47 said March 20, 2009

Dewiel thanks for the response there are other things I would like to see in the game like for instance if you are playing in the rose bowl the game starts in the afternoon and ends at night I would like the progression of day to night during games.   Along with during a dynasty when you are creating a custom schedule having the ability to choose a time you would like to have a game played along with the option of choosing a neutral site for regular season games

  • IndyColts2 said March 20, 2009

Thanks for the response Dewiel, I guess you can't have that many people but hopefully they do a good job and get good info out to us. But I have specific questions. I'm sure you can't even answer them to us so soon though and that's why I'm so frustrated, because you guys aren't really shelling out as much info as Madden and it comes out a month later. But anyway,

What steps have you guys taken to make it a TRUE college football experience? Don't give me a fancy answer to get around the question like I see some of the producers do and please don't say that there is a new feature that gives us a better way to show are school spirit or something (aka Season Showdown). I want to know if there will be refs and sideline crews, an actual presentation (not even halftime shows but pregame warmups, a midgame analysis of things, etc). Will Kirk, Brad, and Lee record new commentary TOGETHER and will they actually be programmed correctly into the game?

I don't have anymore I can think of off the top of my head right now but thats it. It's Friday now so maybe one of the 7 guests answered my questions, hopefully.

  • jumpoff47 said March 20, 2009

IndyColts2 just made me think about how cool  some thing that transitions you from halftime to gameplay would be along with something I thought of a while ago which is probably unrealistic at this point is during dynast mode before each week of games having the college game day show at the schools which are in the game of the week...

  • youngmeech said March 21, 2009

first of all community day was a joke, and as quiet as you guys have been ncaa better have the best new features of all time, if not i think you guys might be dissapointed in sales

  • deusmortuus said March 23, 2009

I don't want to say that community day was a joke, it was what it was.  I'm sure there was a lot of great feedback from the participants, but it did feel a bit lackluster on our end.  I thought that there were going to be a few feature reveals or maybe even some footage of the current build in action, but we really didn't get anything.  I'm a bit disappointed, but it did give me an excuse to throw up a lot of posts on Friday.

  • lawyerkiller said March 23, 2009

Yea. I've been loyal to this game for over a decade. I play religeously, and always have, but it is getting ridiculous to not take advantage of what the new systems have to offer. Some details are small, some not so small, but you can't keep putting out these games with all the gadget game modes. Also, when a lot of people think about great college football players of the current generation, you think about reggie bush with the towel flapping, tebow with the one eye patch, stafford with the one long sleeve on his off arm. You guys have really got to step it up.  Online gaming has quickly become the next frontier, and playing a dynasty and not knowing when it will randomly end is frustrating.  Some people make it to year 9, some year 3, some year 5, and so on.  When you play alot of these aline dynasties people invest a lot of hours into these things, and we only expect the producers to do the same. I have buddies all over the country playing in dynasties that can give you names and hometowns of prized recruits they picked up during their dynasty. C'mon guys. Step it up.
