Fight Night Round 4 - The Heavyweights

Posted On: Mar. 28, 2009 1:52 AM EST By: sk88z 47 Comments

Hey fight fans.  Over the upcoming weeks we'll be revealing our roster and accompanying screenshots for everyone to view.  At the moment, Brian and the rest of the game team are in the busiest time of their development cycle.  I know they are really excited about finishing up the game and getting it out to the ever growing number of fans that have been patiently waiting for the next installment of Fight Night.  We'll continue to share the screens here along with blogs and news from the Fight Night team for all our sports fans to check out along with sharing information on the Fight Night Round 4 website.  Click on the the thumbs to see the larger image.  Without further ado, here is Brizzo's recap of the heavyweight lineup with one more heavyweight fighter to be revealed in the upcoming weeks!

By Brian Hayes, Producer

Muhammad Ali

What am I going to say that hasn’t already been said countless times by countless people more qualified than me in countless ways? Muhammad Ali is a legend. He was on the cover of a DC comic boxing Superman. Superman! And given what Ali was able to accomplish in the ring, I might put money on him being able to psyche out Kal-El at the press conference, getting him to fight his fight and shaking up the world once again. Ali brought boxing to another level with his speed and grace. The heavyweight division didn’t know how to handle a guy like him. Heavyweights didn’t move that way. Heavyweights didn’t punch that fast. Heavyweights didn’t talk that much. Ali broke the mold and his list of accomplishments puts him up there for serious consideration as the greatest boxer of all time.

Eddie Chambers

At 33-1 with 18KO, “Fast” Eddie Chambers is one of today’s top American heavyweight contenders. Just over six feet tall and weighing about 220lbs, he’s no giant, especially these days. That being the case, he’s known for using fast hands and feet to compete against bigger, stronger opponents. A win in his upcoming March bout against the heavy-hitting Sam Peter could do a lot for the little known Philly-based Chambers who has the skills to befuddle a less technical and less agile opponent.

George Foreman

Big George has evolved into one of the most likable and affable personalities in sports today, but in his prime, he was one of the most frightening specimens in heavyweight history. Fairly big for his time with a menacingly calm demeanor and brutal knockout power in both hands. He destroyed Joe Frazier and Ken Norton, two guys who gave Muhammad Ali fits.  Which led to many people heavily favoring Foreman in the now legendary “Rumble In The Jungle,” and anticipating a similar end for Ali. The result is history and George may have come up short, but it is only legendary fighters that make for such legendary fights

Joe Frazier

Full disclosure, “Smokin’” Joe Frazier is my favorite heavyweight of all time. He epitomizes heart, toughness and determination. When you combine that with great head movement, a pathological body attack and a crushing left hook, you end up with one of the baddest men to ever wear the heavyweight strap. This man took a unanimous decision from Ali in the “Fight of the Century,” putting him on the canvas with his patented hook in the 15th round. The two met twice more, and their third fight, “The Thrilla in Manila” is one of the most awesome spectacles in boxing history (in my humble opinion). People say Muhammad Ali is the greatest of all time and we are all free to debate that until we are blue in the face. But there is no Muhammad Ali without Joe Frazier, or vice versa, and there is no debating that.

Lennox Lewis

Here is a guy that was under-appreciated in his heyday because of how well he fought to his strengths. Keeping shorter, smaller opponents outside and not letting them work if they got close. He's an Olympic Gold Medallist, an undisputed Heavyweight Champion and one of the most skillful big men ever seen in the sport. His combination of power, speed, size and technical ability would make problems for just about anybody. Lewis defeated every man he ever faced, avenging his only two defeats with stoppage victories. Lewis had an explosive right hand that spelled doom for many opponents, as it did for Hasim Rahman when Lewis regained the Heavyweight title 2001.

James Toney

James “Lights Out” Toney is the epitome of an old-school fighter. Having 82 fights in the modern era is almost unheard of. He’s the kind of guy that has forgotten more about boxing than many fighters will ever learn during his years fighting from Middleweight to Heavyweight. Toney is living proof that skills can conquer just about any opponent. One of the most gifted counter-punchers and one of the most relaxed fighters inside the ropes; attributes which have allowed him to compete at the highest level without having the highest level of conditioning. Sorry James!

Mike Tyson

“Iron” Mike Tyson, aka “Kid Dynamite” took the Heavyweight division by storm in the 80’s using his uncanny combination of speed and power. The young Mike Tyson was an incredible boxer who displayed amazing head movement, footwork and combination punching. Watching old training videos of him on youtube is amazing. I shudder to think what it was like for opponents to see this man in his prime. The youngest heavyweight champion in history, as well  as one of the most recognizable sports figures and most dangerous video game bosses of all time. Mike is also a true boxing historian and a tremendous fight fan.

I think the boxers look great. I'm really excited for this game.

I just hope that some of the heavy weights arent too slow at punching. For example.. In FNR3 James Tony was kinda slow. I remember watching a fight on ESPN with Holyfield vs Tony and Tony was quite a bit quicker than he was in Fight Night Round 3. So, I'm hoping in FNR4 People like Holyfield and James Tony are more quicker like they are in real life.

  • Chief518 said March 28, 2009

wow so all together 8 heavy weights...... game lookd good im sure but gameplay will be good but i can c the roster is goin to succ

  • BillTheMac said March 28, 2009

Yeah, I just noticed what you just mentioned. Is there only gonna be 8 Heavy Weights?

What about.. Holyfield, Joe Louis, Rocky Marciano, Floyd Patterson, Sonny Liston, Leon Spinks, James Douglas, Ray Mercer...

  • Andy0001 said March 28, 2009

Where is Holyfield.  You have Tyson, Lewis but now Holyfield.  Thats is not good.

  • SouthSideGFX said March 28, 2009

I believe its 8 real heavyweights than 8 more light heavyweights.

  • HiIIdog39 said March 28, 2009

what the heck!?! no Roy Jones Jr. or Bernard Hopkins???

  • BillTheMac said March 28, 2009

SouthSideGFX, the boxers I mentioned along with others. Use to be heavy weight champions. They are more than 8 "real heavyweights".

I just hope there are alot of the great boxers in this game.

  • DntMssWthTx said March 28, 2009

I hope this isn't the complete heavyweight list, can't wait for release.

  • MoneyJ41 said March 29, 2009

Nice write-up Brizzo... I think it's true what you said about every boxer... I hope that they act like that in the ring...

    keep up the good work

  • AfroMANIA said March 29, 2009

    Seriously 8 heavyweights...

Why are there new old boxers and not any new top boxers that are out now??

Why do they always focus on the legends and not the people that are Actually Boxing now??

When im playing career mode i dont want to fight Ali or Frazier i want to fight Wladimir Klitschko, John Ruiz, Shannon Briggs.

Seems like its just going to be the same old Fight Night with old boxers and boring career mode

I Hope the rest of the Roster isnt as small and OLD

  • Nef77 said March 29, 2009

why is toney a heavyweight when he was at his best at middleweight. he one the title once as a heavyweight but got it stripped because of failing his drug test. V. Klitschko (I feel he's better than the brother), Holyfield, or Joe Louis. Sorry afro but John Ruiz, uh no. I know you got one more spot, but it's just one. Looks nice though.

  • Raw237 said March 29, 2009

Any hint toward Joe Lewis or Sugar Ray Robinson being in the game?

  • warrior310 said March 29, 2009

don't expect anything big from this game, really how much improvements could you make to a boxing game and they only have 8 retired heavyweights.

have the most current boxers instead.

  • Nef77 said March 29, 2009

warrior learn the sport, there aren't many great heavyweights now and they still haven't released the other weight classes. the biggest names in the heavyweight division are in the past except for the Klitschko bros. Pac Man, Calzeghe, Juan Marquez, Israel Vazquez and Sugar Shane I'm pretty sure will be in the game

  • BillTheMac said March 29, 2009

If your a fan of boxing, played Fight Night Round 3 a decent amount of time and seen the early gameplay footage... You would be excitied for the new one and see how much gameplay has improved.

  • xcel_219 said March 29, 2009

This is Complex. Nice write up.  Tell Brian, he loses points for being a Frazier homer LOL.

And tell him Lewis loses points for being KOd by Rahman and McCall.

  • Avii_Tristan said March 29, 2009

    Rocky Marciano y'all

  • RexNFX said March 29, 2009

Seriously? You don't include the Heavyweight Champion to hold the belt the longest and have the most title defenses? Why is Joe Louis kept out of your otherwise great boxing franchice?

  • stuart100 said March 30, 2009

looks great nut disapointed with lennoxs boxing trunks!!!

  • atvsbk said March 30, 2009

been looking forward to this game for ages, really hope the roster doesnt spoil it! looks like it might tho. thats not a dig!lol  u can understand that not everyone is going to be happy and someone will allways be dissapointed, but i think most people feel there should be a bigger roster. also more up to date roster. how gutted would you be if you bought another sports game (e.g football, basketball etc) and they mainly comprised of hall of fame teams like the dolphins of the 80's, and no teams of the modern day. it would suck! fair enough, in boxing u want2 create dream fights that never took place or ali v tyson etc... but its really important to have people like klitchko, david haye and john ruiz etc. and in other divisions people like judah, cotto, pacman, pavlik, froch, amihr khan, taylor, kessler etc.  really really hope they have calzaghe!

does any one know why other sports games can have massive numbers of teams and franchises, with huge numbers of individual players but boxing games are really limited in comparison.  is it more complicated to get the rights and stuff?

  • Juxt said March 30, 2009

i saw this post on a website and thought if it wasnt too late for any ideas about CAB to post it her for you Brian.

"i had seen this a few times on a few games, and i think it was awesome.

Now when i create my fighters in any of the other fight nights, no matter how close they look to there real life counterpart, its completely dumb that i have to hear them get announced and then named by the commentator as bulldog, freight train and other crap.

why cant EA and the game developers put the text to speech in the game, it worked great on and older 2k golf game, put in your name like you normally would and the commentator would say your name instead of some tired old generic nickname. for me this is a must on any next gen game with a great CAB system, and its a must for boxing games and there rosters are usually more anorexic than a supermodel.

IF THIS TECHNOLOGY COULD WORK ON THE OLD ORIGINAL XBOX THEN IT CAN BE USED JUST AS EASY ON THE NEW NEXT GEN CONSOLES!!!!

Also they need to incorporate the game face feature, where you can take a picture, and then the game will render it on a model, just like tiger woods, if the can do both of these things good then CAB`s would be really easy and pretty much authentic

  • Juxt said March 30, 2009

also,i know that 2K had prizefighter and don king boxing which just came out and they have the rights to some fighters that are among the best current fighters today:Juan Manuel Marquez,Chad Dawson,Kelly Pavlik,Juan Diaz,Chris John, and Vic Darchinyan. I noticed that in Don King Boxing that JMM,John, and Darchinyan were not in it.Does that mean you were only able to negotiate for the rights of those guys or that since Venom i think went out of business that you were able to negotiate for all the boxers in prizefighter.Because it would be a shame if JMM(ring lightweight and #2 p4p,he especially needs to be in there it would be almost as bad as leaving out floyd mayweather),Chad Dawson(#2 light heavyweight),Pavlik(ring middleweight),Diaz(lightweight #2),John(Featherweight #1), and Drachinyan(bantamweight #1) weren't in the game.It just wouldn't be authentic and a created fighter never feels right no matter how detailed the system is.(id be in favor of DLC if in time you cant all those guys if you couldnt sign them by release).I know the limits of licensing in the ability to obtain fighters but since i think there will be around 47-48 fighters i really hope you can get them in because they pretty much dominate the p44 rankings along w/cotto,pacquiao,mosley,williams,hopkins,vasquez,rafael marquez, and hopkins right now and the lower weight classes are what make boxing great these days and provide the depth of the sport.

  • Merovengean said March 30, 2009

The line up looks pretty good so far. And I know that this isn't the entire line up for the heavyweights. We've been waiting entirely too long and have been enticed too much for this to be it. I have spoken to alot of Fight Night fans, and they said in order to make this complete, you have absolutely have to have HOLYFIELD, HOLYFIELD, HOLYFIELD!!!! Come to think of it, you guys left hime out of FNR3 on the PS3. What's up with that. Also, it would good to have WLADIMR KLITSCKO as well. But most of all, please don't leave out HOLYFIELD, HOLYFIELD, HOLYFIELD, HOLYFIELD, HOLYFIELD, HOLYFIELD, HOLYFIELD, HOLYFIELD, HOLYFIELD, HOLYFIELD, HOLYFIELD, HOLYFIELD, HOLYFIELD, HOLYFIELD, HOLYFIELD, HOLYFIELD, HOLYFIELD.

  • quiet_flame said March 30, 2009

This is not the entire Heavyweight line-up. The blog clearly says "some of the fighters" and they will continue to introduce more Heavyweights. These are just some of the obvious ones....Except for Eddie Chambers... Who's actually a really good fighter.

  • BillTheMac said March 30, 2009

    quiet_flame

at the end of the sentence it says: "Without further ado, here is Brizzo's recap of the heavyweight lineup with one more heavyweight fighter to be revealed in the upcoming weeks!"

So, its sounds like there will only be 1 more heavyweight unfortunitly. Unless, they read our comments and can add a couple more heavy weights...

  • atvsbk said March 30, 2009

gutted!!  been looking forward to this game for ages and this heavyweight roster looks dissapointing. hope we get the full roster b4 it is released cos i really dont want to go out and buy it and then be dissapointed when i play it.

juxt - because those other boxing games had those fighters does it definatley mean they wont be on this one?

  • Andy0001 said March 30, 2009

Every one knows that the final heavyweight is Morrison.  It should have been a prime holyfield.  It annoys me this does and also Brizzo has gone quiet on Q and A that have been asked on the Ea sports forum.

  • Juxt said March 30, 2009

atvsbk, it depends on the licensing deal each fighter recieved, prizefighter came out june of last year so if a fighter got a 1 yr deal, they would be free to sign in other games by june i guess(im not a legal expert so im not sure if there's anything about voiding a contract or such)

but seeing as both the fight night round 3 and prizefighter roster didnt share any fighters i would say that if your in one you cant be in the other.

juan manuel marquez, chris john, and vic darchinyan were 360 exclusive fighters so their deal mightve ended already kinda how holyfield was a ps3 exclusive for fn3 and now he's out of fn4

  • big-augen said March 31, 2009

    Dear Brian,

nice to see Tyson and Lewis in the lineup.

BUT where are all the european fighters? THE european fighters which dominate the heaveweight. The KLITSCHKO BROTHERS and Nikolai Waluev! Also Ruslan Chagaev, David Haye, Alexander Dimitrenko...

    Best regards from Germany,

    Eugen

  • Jeimuzu-sama said March 31, 2009

    Brian-sama,

I have to agree with big-augen and BillTheMac about their requested boxers but also what about the Nigerian Nightmare. Also would the Facebreakers echnoloy be used in this game for create a boxer. When I first saw the CAB for Facebreakers, I knew that this was only test run for what was to come on the next Fight Night.

I personally think that Fight Night Round 2 was the best one the depth in roster. You have to make this roster deep. This is not your every year franchise. Fight Night Round 4 can be the greatest not just on gameplay and visuals but because it has surpassed each and every other boxing game ever known to man simply by what you have already done and beefing up that roster.

    Jeimuzu-sama

  • QVNYC84 said March 31, 2009

Why not have DLC for FNR4? Wouldn't that be possible? If the game comes out in the summertime right and there obviously won't be everyone in the roster who we'd like to see, then I assume at some point that you could have the options to download current and past greats. I'm pretty sure Holyfield will be in the heavy division. I think there's gotta be at least like 10 to 12 heavyweights; 7 shown in this blog, and add Holyfield, Louis, Marciano and others. From what I heard, Marciano was confirmed and I think Louis too.

The point is please get the licenses for all of these great boxers and whoever can't be in the initial release of the game, have the ability to have DLC because since this game only comes out every 3-4 years, many of us gamers are gonna want to play it until the next installment. I want to see how the career mode is fleshed out. I think there should be some kind of online component with that, if it's possible anyway. Can't wait till July!

  • Andy0001 said March 31, 2009

How are u supposed to play the deep legacy mode in the heavyweight division with 8 real fighters.  Look like ill end up fighting Toney 10 times again like FN3.  This is very dissapointing. So much for "one of the most anticipated games of the year".  More like let down of the year.

  • J_KEYz said March 31, 2009

You guys need a bigger roster, online needs new feature to kick it up a notch, example able to spectate the top 10 players and see how good they really are.

  • QVNYC84 said March 31, 2009

I hope this isn't the entire list, and I'm confident it won't be, but honestly, I don't know about everyone here, but I wouldn't pay all that money for the addition of 4 more boxers and the subtraction/replacement of 5 or 6 from FNR3's heavy roster. Let's hope there's more on the way. We deserve that much as FN fans.

  • Juxt said March 31, 2009

did u just say than fn3 had a heavy roster LOL.i dont mind the roster it has Muhammad Ali,George Foreman,Mike Tyson, and Joe Frazier who arguably make up the modern top 5 boxers of all time along with Larry Holmes and maybe Lennox Lewis in at at a close 7.(i am excluding Joe Louis b/c he would definately be in the top 3.)

  • Andy0001 said April 02, 2009

Where is any decent news on legacy mode chaps????

  • masterk369 said April 04, 2009

How about the greatest Canadian Boxer of all time...George Chuvalo. He had 93 pro fights won 64 by ko, and only lost 18. Two of his fights where vs Ali, he also fought Frazier, Foreman, and Patterson. He had the greatest chin in boxing history, and has never ever been knocked down by anyone in his career. and broke the amature boxing record by winning all 16 bouts all by ko in less then 4 rounds.

Time to bring BOOM BOOM Chuvalo to fight night.

  • COUNTER-BRAWLER said April 07, 2009

good list in the heavyweight... bet the last heavy will be klitschko Hope we see the full roster sooner. can't wait to know if juan manuel marquez is in it or not. should have put all the p4p fighters including floyd mayweather jr. ***

  • money-mayweather said April 11, 2009

when we guna find out the rest of the roster?

  • stopsturges said April 11, 2009

are they going to have fylod (idntknow to spell it0 on the game

  • warrior310 said April 11, 2009

The game is looking good. But could you guys have a roster update for new boxers in the game.

  • DJ_PUERTO said May 27, 2009

ok i have been plaing the demo and when you upper cut it miss sometime's but the boxer get's knock out...you need to fix that and where is the button control...need to punch with button's not anlog button give us a better option.where is may weather in the game.....come on ea

  • DJ_PUERTO said May 27, 2009

stop putting old boxers......step it up ea

although these are all great heavyweight fighters, this games roster is lacking severely. in a game so heavy with classic fighters, where is evander holyfield, or for that matter, the undefeated champ, rocky marciano? also, where is the modern heavyweight division? i see one modern heavyweight on this list, which is an embarrassingly small figure. where are the klitschko's? where is nik valuev? where is samuel peter? where is maskaev? chagaev? the names just keep going on. aside from the heavyweight division, the roster also fails to feature bernard hopkins or floyd mayweather jr, arguably the two best pound for pound fighters in the last 4 years. despite this games obvious achievement of quality visuals and excellent gameplay, it has an embarrassingly scant roster, with many major holes that cannot go unnoticed. for this reason, this game may be the first installment in the fight night series that i do not buy. it is hard to justify spending $60 on a game where i cannot even play as some of the greatest fighters ion the history of the sport, or some of the best known fighters of today.
