April Fool's (plus some real info)

Posted On: Apr. 1, 2009 11:22 AM EST By: EA_IanCummings 104 Comments

Many caught on right away, but I wanted to officially clarify that the image we released this morning was an April Fool's joke.
http://insideblog.easports.com/archive/2009/03/31/creating-quot-next-gen-quot-quarterback-play-in-madden-nfl.aspx

Some may say it was cruel, so we are sorry if you feel that way, but after all we are making video games here, we aren't government officials so it seems fitting to have a little more fun right?

Here are the key details I thought would give it away:
- Calling the feature 3.0 when there hasn't been a 2.0
- Green being worse than yellow
- Different shading for lob / bullet
- Jagged lines seemed like a dead giveaway to me - that would be absolutely impossible to understand
- Removing the ability to actually run with your QB (eek!)
- Using an extremely complex button combo to even activate (or de-activate) the feature

In our first blog for the year we made clear that we weren't about delivering gimmicks...we wanted to deliver a PURE and authentic NFL experience. This went pretty much 180 against that vision. :)

To be clear, there will not be a QB Vision 3.0 in Madden NFL 10. But it looks like we still tricked a few of you. Kudos to Josh Looman for coming up with QB Vision as our piece to play the joke.

To extend an olive branch and show that we're not totally heartless, I figured I'd touch really quickly on a REAL improvement to gameplay for Madden NFL 10 (via new animation technology and AI) in the area of sideline catches.

If you have played pretty much any version of Madden, this has probably happened to you:

You throw a nice pass to your receiver as he breaks open on an out route towards the sidelines, but your WR plays a catch animation that gets his foot just out of bounds, nullifying your perfect vision as a QB (sorry, bad pun). This is one of the more frustrating occurrences across all skill levels for every Madden player. We knew we had to fix this.

There are three main things that we will do for Madden NFL 10 to improve this area:
1. Added AI to make players dynamically slow down as they approach the sideline (instead of running full speed)
2. Allow early animation branching at the end of certain animations so they learn to better drag their feet
3. Dynamically "steer" the catch animation as he approaches the sideline. This emulates what a real NFL player does as he tries to keep his feet in bounds...he will try to 'curve' upfield to maximize his shot at getting his feet down where possible.

Check out the video below - an example from Madden NFL 09 is on the left while the new technology you'll see in Madden NFL 10 is at work on the right. You can pretend that the out of bounds line is the edge of the grid. In the example, you can see how just a slight bit of "steering" on a catch animation can mean the difference between a pass being incomplete and complete. You'll also notice how the same animation can branch into a more realistic "toe drag" ending and make the player look much more aware of his surroundings. We can also make players with higher awareness and agility ratings actually "steer" even more upfield, which could hypothetically even keep guys in bounds and able to keep running up field (probably wouldn't apply in this example though).

In summary, we hope this makes up for our little April Fools prank. This new "steering" technology is being used in many other areas that we'll be talking about soon, but even in this simple example I think it's evident how we can really improve the passing game with this addition.

I shake my head at you EA

  • warrior310 said April 01, 2009

could d linemen be able to catch pics please.

have shoulder pad sizes because on some players like greg ellis (dallas) have the hugest shoulder pads it's crazy.

in franchise have a show about all the nfl news during the season and offseason.

have the computer generate expansion teams once in a blue moon and let them relocate real teams.

in franchise let it be easier to make our player's better don't limit us in work outs.

  • jellybean3454 said April 01, 2009

you scared me there ian but great new feature love it keep up the work, and make this the best madden ever and listen to the feedback we give you because if you can notice everyone is complaining about the same thing and i like the 2 new updates a week

  • micdevious said April 01, 2009

    Thank God!!!!!!

  • Bearfan3417 said April 01, 2009

HA!!! Great joke i was fooled at first but then realized it after reading the idiotic comments haha. New animations and sideline catches look awesome. Keep up the great work. This updates every week thing is cool :)

  • warrior310 said April 01, 2009

work on the spectactular catches, and the swing routes by the running backs.

    also add more routes.

  • Deltroy said April 01, 2009

You guys rock I  thought it was real lol.  The new animations look smooth and sweet Ian thanks lol.

  • Nef77 said April 01, 2009

indycolts is right on about the QB vision. in real football, the defense can read the qb's eyes during a pass play. the qb can also play the D by looking them off but you give a huge advantage to the qb by not adding a cone allowing him to run, stop and throw on target across the field without having the defense break on the play. still nice update on the catching animation.

  • MAXIMUS205 said April 01, 2009

Good One Ian,lol. I was actually thinking how the cone would work with the speed of the game this year. The sideline catch ani's look great and i can see better players stopping, spinning back in on a dime, then hitting the left stick juke to head up the field.NICE JOB!!!

  • jellybean3454 said April 01, 2009

i know it seems like we complain every time you guys tell us something new or it may seem like we dont like it but i bet you everybody liked every new feature you guys added but we still complain about what needs to be fixed but thats because we hope you guys dont forget to fix that or take something out that doesnt need to be taken out............. but i'll i gotta say is keep up the good work and try to fix everything you can for the fans even the little things we want and i promise you that will be the best madden ever

  • bonee-de said April 01, 2009

    Nice one!

I caught my PS3-Online-League mates telling them that EA has announced the Online-Franchise for Madden 2010 ...

... I hope my April-Fools will turn out to be true.

  • NELL86 said April 01, 2009

that was wack another year of cheese quarterbacks running around in the backfeild

  • jWILL253 said April 01, 2009

Everyone who believed the original article is a tool. It's April Fool's Day, for God sake!

  • IndyColts2 said April 01, 2009

EVERYONE was going CRAZY when you posted that lol. That was funny as hell, but I really think that you guys need to add QB vision back in but as an option. It can't hurt because you can set at "off" for default so that all these fags don't cry about it being on. Also, the new technology for sideline catches is a great new thing to add in. Really helpful but I just hope it works. It definitely looks like it does and I hope you add different animations for the WR like falling down and dragging his feet. Also, add in different animations for different types of weather. But, the only thing is, is that even though it is a different team now, Madden 08 had added in sideline catches and look where it is now. Make this one work!

  • AWHollywood54 said April 01, 2009

I'm not gonna lie, you got me.  The sideline catching looks good though.  Also, just want to congratulate/thank the Madden team for all the hard they're putting in, I've never been someone to complain about Madden, but this one looks like it'll blow every other Madden away.

  • NoSubs said April 01, 2009

haha, nice one. I hope QB visions stays a joke!

Thanks for this update, I eagerly anticipate one on franchise mode.

  • Aso21Raiders said April 01, 2009

Add online franchise and the Wildcat (insert it without it being glitchy, and make it still sim). Re-vamp franchise mode all the way around. Please have an update regarding franchise mode soon.

I get it, ha ha.  April fools right?

  • Steelceltic said April 01, 2009

i see that you guys add towels to the players now, but i hope that's not the only accessory that you guys implemented into the game. There should be a gang load of accessories that should have been in this game about 2 years ago. you guys should have the accessories over lap each other, and you you guys should also have the short arm sleeves that Matt Ryan wears, and you should have the computer automatically add tape or to an injured part of the body, like if Big Ben were to hurt is hand, but he still can come back and play, there should be a tape around is hand or thumb to indicate is injury. let alone hinder is performance, depending on how tough he is. then with that there should be animations in the game showing him in between plays holding his hand or what ever injured limb or ligament he is suffering from

also the shows, fix the shows, i notice the plays have thee biggest shoelaces know to man kind. and have different colors to the shows, if you wanna wear gold shows like Reggie bush, then so be it, you should have the ability to do so. for example the steelers wear white n yello shows or white in black shoes, not just white shoes. and some of the players for the giants wear red shows and have red gloves.

another thing is bring back mouth pieces, and the different type of neck braces. there should be the types of mouth piece where there the ones with no shield or the one with shield like the one deuce staley use to wear.

and about the neck braces, there should be the role that Keith bullock wears or the washboard that james farrior once wore, or is it andre frazior (back up MLB from the steelers)

moving away from the accessories i would like to talk about the QB and HB animations. I see you guys are working on them, but i was thinking on the different ways a QB holds the ball in the pocket, and they way each QB has their own release, for example, Mcnabb holds the ball low around is stomach/ chest region and his release is is more of a laid back type release, compared to how Peyton Manning holds the ball, he has the ball up high around the head should area, and his release is more aggressive, and he emphasizes on the way is fingers are on the release (all twitched up n stuff),

now on the HALFBACKS animation, you guys already have their unique running styles, but have them run tighter as far as the arms moving faster and closer to the body and the legs at the appropriate pace, and have the legs take realistic steps, like the players kind of run cartoony, like super Mario where both feet are completely off the ground when running, the ball should be closer to the body, and not so far out, the backs of the  runners (ACTUALLY EVERYBODY) when sprinting or running at top speed, their backs are straight, not slouched over and bent.

I've ran out of more things to think of and say but be sure i will be back, so far you guys are doing ok with some of your improvements, but only time will tell to see if  these are lies or this whole game will be a april fools joke in august........

  • DePounded said April 01, 2009

Lol. Nice one guys, count me as one of the one fooled punk'd also.  YES!!!!! This is the update I was looking and hoping for in Madden NFL 10. You guys continue to impress, keep up the good work!  Quick question/comment: I've noticed in Madden NFL 09 that when throwing swing passes to the RB/FB, oftentimes he catches the pass 5 or 6 yds behind the line of scrimmage, and sometimes his momentum causes him to go out-of-bounds. In the real NFL, RB/FBs usually catch flat passes in stride, and obviously, they don't run out-of-bounds after making the catch, not sure if this means that you guys have made these changes already with the new sidelines animations, but this would also be a great addition to the game play in my opinion.  Thanks for the updates, and you guys are doing an awesome job so far.  Keep up the good work, and let's hear about Franchise and Xbox Live soon!

Ha. Damn yall really had me on that sh#t, good prank. I didnt have an April Fool's prank played on me all day....and then this happened. And again EA great job on everything so far. But with that said i still do believe QB VIsion needs to be in the game. Like i said before, it was a great idea. If you guys could just find a way to make the lesser QB's ability better i dont think to many ppl would have a problem with it. And as far as everybody else that opposess it.... their probably CHEEZERS or GLITCHES anyway. And if this is supposed to be "THE GAME" LIKE YALL ARE MAKING IT SOUND....YOU SHOULDNT EVEN BE CONCERNED WITH THEM. I know alot of us arent!

  • Green26 said April 01, 2009

As a purchaser of Madden since the '95 game came out, the best mode I have enjoyed and played has been Franchise Mode.  This is usually the only place I put in any substantial amount of playing on Madden.  I have had some concerns/ideas rolling around for several years now.  I like the customization that there is available to create players and teams now, but the main qualm I've had with Franchise Mode is the inability to edit player's attributes.  The main reason I would like to do this is such that I think I may do a better job of progressing my teammates than the standard progression system that is in place now.  It doesn't matter to me that I think the progression is wrong, because it is usually somewhat close to what should happen, but if I disagree with a 10pt stat jump or a declination of similiar magnitude I think there should be an opprotunity to change it.  There has also been some bugs within the progression systems of past.  In order to get created players to progress I would have to edit a piece of equipment that will reset their morales and then progression would continue normally at the end of the season.

One scenario that I would like it creating a whole team/organization from top to bottom.  I would like to be able to name all of the coaches, general managers, owners, and still play that team in franchise mode.  Basically, a more in-depth create-a-team option.

I also think that any additional customization of created players is welcome.  Different body types,(including biometric measurements: arm length, etc.) faces, or other subtleties would make gaming experience better and would bring a greater connection between the video gamer and the player.  This is what keeps me playing Franchise Mode for 10+ seasons.  The main reason I want more customization is because I enjoy creating whole team with people that I have played sports with.  A team void of NFL players that can compete with NFL teams that I actually have a connection to instead of the stars of the NFL.

I thought the gameplay in Madden 09 was very, very good compared to recent years.  This has been the best game yet.  The new sliders that you guys are planning to put in Madden 10 also look good.  The banners of stats that are displayed during the games are also very cool.  Any more of those put in during gameplay is also welcome.

In essence, the more control that I have when I play Madden, the more likely it will fit my preferred gaming experience.

  • Leyland said April 01, 2009

Truck Yeah! So about penalty animations, on a false start is the QB still going to run across the line? Because in Ncaa They show an animation of a linemen moving or if its the defense they have the defender knocking over a guard or tackle. I hope that type of stuff is in Madden 10.

  • BillTheMac said April 01, 2009

yeah you guys totally had me fooled.nice job with the sideline catching i see you guys are putting a serious effort to make this the best football expieriance ever so ill keep my negative comments to myself from here on out.i know you guys are not going to be able to address every issue this year but please please do something bout the presentation we need more realisim on those sidelines and in the crowds and so on we need that nfl feel other than that keep up the good work ea.

  • Joborule said April 01, 2009

Great prank. Sure fooled a lot of people and got hopes up!

But good makeup for it. Those incomplete passes because the receiver didn't make a better attempt of staying in bounce were very frustrating and made the out route more difficult. Good to see this is worked on.

I would like to see animations that make the receiver stop on the dime so they can go upfeild instead of going out of bounce if they can. Of course AI should be smart enough so they don't do it and end up getting themself killed. Only attempt to do so when they have the chance and if need be, need to attack aggressively since they're battling against time and need to catchup in the scoreboard. How well a player can do this in as short of distance as realistically possible should be based on the factors of the receiver agility, balance, size, and even field conditions. If it's a rainy game and the field is at the point that traction is slippery, players may even slip up!

  • prettyrik said April 01, 2009

You guys had me fooled lol(had a feeling though with the crazy colors and edges) I digressed when I saw refs on the field, but I still think that QB vision should still be implented in the gm somehow at least as an option. I know I'm not the only who feels like that. Most people against it are usually cheezers/hacks who run two or three plays to death. They basically rely their whole gm on sprinting with their qbs at the hike of the ball 15-20yds behind line of scrimmage throwing crazy passes off one foot turning 180 degrees in motion.(Which is an issue you guys wanted to prevent in this year's gm. They don't really try to read defenses or try to play realistic. That whole steering technology seems like it should have a big effect on the gm. Keep up the good work guys. Hopefully bringing back "Fair Play" won't be a joke.

  • Bubstarr said April 01, 2009

Ian I like the fact that you guys are upgrading facets of the game that requires subtle to severe tuning. The thought of light emanating from the QB's eyes is equivalent to fluff. My fellow countrymen, please vote no to QB corny vision. Keep up the great work guys.

Thanks for listening to our feedback! It's refreshing to see that you are paying attention to detail finally. Your motto is "if it's in the game, it's in the game." so i want to see more helmet and facemask choices and i would also like a greater variety of gloves to choose from. I know it's not a big deal to most but it is very distracting for me to see my favorite players not wearing the equipment in the game that they do on sundays.

Here are some links for gloves and helmets.

And here I thought Madden had been an April Fool's joke for the last 8 years.  Nice to see you guys have the cycles to burn.  ;)

This is definitely better information.  I'd like to see a slew of tip toe animations though, not just one canned play as they catch the ball towards the sideline.  APF2K8 provides at least three unique animations that can be executed at multiple speeds and / heights (if the player is extending / in the air).  Nice to see that Madden has one, but what about the stop and fall down animation and the jump up and flail to stay in animation?  I'd like to see a one handed grab animation while attempting to keep the feet in as well.  Something that would be used a lot on a corner play in the end zone.

Will we be able to challenge ball spots and ref calls like we can in APF2K8?

Will plays be called successful if the receiver is pushed out of bounds by the corner back before they can get their feet down?

  • jmac11qb said April 01, 2009

    haha good joke EA :P

even better update. thank you soo much for fixing sideline catches. that is going to inhance the realism that madden 10 is going to have. you guys are doing a great job on the new game.

  • stacks1212 said April 01, 2009

You guys should also should give WR's most catching animations. i hate that spin catch the players do for no reason

  • garbo22 said April 01, 2009

  • stacks1212 said April 01, 2009

for the next post id like to see you post something on franchise mode and superstar. for superstar mode you should make it more like the one on ps2.

and on my last post i meant to say give WR's more animations when i comes to catching

  • Joey_Grizz said April 01, 2009

    LMFAO!!!!!! OK ya'll Got me...But i didn't care either way.....lol

Great Job on the sideline catches. Sometimes when i throw a screen, the RB/FB's momentum has them run out of bounds to catch the ball, will this prevent that?

Also, One thing that kills me.... is When i get called for a facemask or a hold... and the defenders hands are like 2 feet away from the facemask... Can ya'll guys make it look like a facemask and a hold... i wanna see them grab the facemask and pull... i wanna see a fist full of Jersey on a holding penalty.... Maybe even add horse collar tackles...cuz they happen quite frequently in the NFL... and even injury caused by these tackles and penalties.... just a little more realism for the game... I know it's a game but nothing suck worst then these inconsistencies

With retired players....Can we possibly get an opportunity to talk them into coming back? or bringing sum folkz outta retirement like the Jets did with Farve... I think that would be pretty  damn cool!

  • EmJaySena said April 02, 2009

Hey guys, thank you for all the hard work. I have a couple features I'd like to suggest for Madden 10 or even Madden 11 if it's too late to put into the game now.

    Player Sleeves

-For some players, the sleeves should not be tight against the arm, but free flowing, more like the towels included in "The Shot". Realistic cloth animation should be possible, and would be a nice touch.

-Half sleeves are nice, but why stop in one direction? Some players (such as Matt Ryan or David Carr) wear short-sleeved shirts underneath their jerseys and pads. Shouldn't be complicated, and again would be a nice realism feature.

    Player Equipment

-Arm bands, wrist bands, and things of the sort are really well done so far, but how about thinking outside of the box? What if you added sliders for each band you add, one controlling the size of the band and one controlling the placement of it on the arm? I think the customization you would add with that would be tremendous.

-Various other equipment could be added. Some that come to mind are eye black, breathe-rite strips, and bicep bands (could be done with the feature previously mentioned).

    Super Bowl/Playoffs

-I'm sure you've heard this a thousand times before. Make it a thousand and one, then, because it's that important. "Make it FEEL like the playoffs/Super Bowl." There are various ways to do this. Pregames could be extended to show introductions of both teams, with the announcers making generic comments about "...what a year it's been for these guys, they've been through it all..." Perhaps before the on-field pregame begins, there could be flashbacks of high points during the season (if the EA Sports Highlight feature would require too much recalling, which would produce lag, motion capture of "canned" great plays would suffice. See the "cutscenes" and pregame stuff from the NHL 04 and beyond for reference.)

Well, I won't bog you down too much more. Too much reading and not enough game-producing would lead to angry fans with torches and pitchforks. Keep up the AMAZING work. Thank you guys!

  • KRYP2NITE4 said April 02, 2009

new animations on the stadium jumbotrons would be nice.. its been the same sinse madden07 and it doesnt even catch my eye anymore as it should do.

  • Moostache said April 02, 2009

Quote : "We can also make players with higher awareness and agility ratings actually "steer" even more upfield, which could hypothetically even keep guys in bounds and able to keep running up field (probably wouldn't apply in this example though)."

Me --> oops on previous comment (egg drips slowly off chin...)

The animation looks fantastic (with the receiver looking down to the sideline to check his feet!) ... nice stuff guys...although a bizarre color coded passing cone would have been what we have seen in the past from a few Madden releases....lol!

  • clwalton21 said April 02, 2009

hopefully there is a way for the DB to combat this.please give DBs the abilty to force the WR out of bounds.every new feature is only fair when both sides can adjust.i love the update.i hope DBs can make the same type of sideline catch for an interception.i agree with some of the post above;factoring in the distance from the sideline, speed(momentum),and player agility some players giving the right conditions(weather) should be able to turn up the field close to the sideline.definitely create a fall down sideline catch animation as well as a jumping animation

  • NELL86 said April 02, 2009

If you go on operation sports i see more people thats in favor of qb vision then thats not the only people who complain is the casual games which ruined football games cuz you cant read a coverage if your devoted to making a sim then add back the vision cone or there will be another year of cheese players running in the back feild wit the qb then throw a perfect strike to a reciever they were not looking at just have a option to turn it on or off that whould should up the nay sayers

  • Moostache said April 02, 2009

Ratings based?  This is nice, but if ALL WR/TE/RB use the SAME animation and have the SAME frequency of success then its just as bad as having them always run OB...

There are elite players in the league that make these catches and make them look routine, then there are guys who make the catch once in every 3 tries and finally there are the guys who nearly NEVER have the body control or awareness to make this adjustment.

If this gets tuned to allow only the elite receivers to routinely make the adjustment then you have a massively cool addition to the game...if not, then its really going to be wasted effort.  I trust that you guys will get this tuned so that people are not subbing in OTs at TE and having them make catches like Chris Carter used to in his prime!!!

  • Spartan117 said April 02, 2009

i liked the cone it made the game more challenging. just make it an option, simple as that. if you want on u turn it on.

  • 4441444 said April 02, 2009

Just a quick note on an issue that frustrates the heck out of me and was amplified last night as I played a game of Madden 09. Defensive angles. They are absent in Madden 09. I am sick of giving up long touchdowns because defensive players take no angles what so ever and just run straight at players giving up more than a number of long touchdowns per game. Grrr. I know NCAA football has addressed that issue and I am just putting in my two cents knowing you guys seem to share resources that you will also adopt that technology. Madden 10 looks like it will be great and I am looking real, real forward to it. Go Skins.

Hopefully tightening up sideline catches will result in a more accurate challenge system, too. I can't count the number of times that I called shenanigans on a catch ruled in-bounds, challenged, watched replays that seem to back me up beyond a shadow of a doubt, only to have the call on the field stand. And to that end, (like a prior commentor mentioned) I hope ball spots/breaking the plane plays are challenge-able....

  • Leyland said April 02, 2009

has anyone else been thinking that if ea isnt showing us stuff til later that there is a chance it might be bad and we will have had no real input in this years game just like always?

  • CAMREN630 said April 02, 2009

better presentation please better sidelines no more rocket catch.

  • Twister1074 said April 02, 2009

I had sneaking suspicion that this was a hoax.  I absolutely love the sideline animations.  THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!  This problem needed to be addressed.

Keep it up guys.  If you improve the presentation and franchise this game will be amazing.

  • sconn1 said April 02, 2009

    a couple of other points....

lose the ability to catch a pass off a ball tipped towards the ground. i got burned twice on this in the last 3 days where i swatted a ball...the ball goes clearly down towards the ground, and some DB scooped it an inch before the ball hit the ground. the kind of play no one could pull off in the NFL.

a tipped ball up, sure, happens all the time, but down...that's just AI glitching and shouldn't be a problem to fix.

also, while we're talking about sidelines....fix them.

what i mean is how sometimes receivers are called in bounds when they are clearly out. i mean when sometimes a fumble happens and the ball is sitting on the paint and someone comes and picks it up and posession changes.

    also...

the other night i had a defensive penalty at the end of a half...i accepted the call, and the half ended ...that is dead wrong and in complete contrast to NFL rule which is clear that the half or game cannot end on a defensive penalty.

it also seems the programming does not allow a call to be challenged if it happens at the end of a half or game as well. that is simply horrible and takes away from any "sim" experience. fix that. nothing sucks more than to get robbed on the last play of a game and have the game result change because of this ineptness.

and while we're talking about challenges....

why the hell can i not look at a replay then challenge a call? why does madden make it "illegal" to do so when the total opposite is the rule & common practice  in the NFL?" that is just stupid...fix it.

  • sconn1 said April 02, 2009

thanks for this decent update. improvement on the sidelines is much needed.

now, with that being said, the REAL april fool joke came in the blog before the "vision3.0" joke...the one where we can plainly see there will be no improvement on the penalty situation.

  • sconn1 said April 02, 2009

i'm curious as to why my posts show up out of order.

  • patsfanmn said April 02, 2009

I am not sure where to put this but in talking about the sideline catches and how you are working on getting better at making it more "realistic" you may want to address another area of the catching game that I have noticed a lot of recently. In playing 09 I have had SEVERAL incidences where a receiver is running up the sideline and leave the field of play, goes out of bounds, but comes right back in and catches a pass for a long or short gain. In the real game the player that went out of bounds can't be the first player to touch the ball... You need to work on this because there are many times where the player is waiting for the ball to be thrown adjusts his positioning and steps out to only step back in and have the ball thrown to him and no one able to defend it. Otherwise I really like the changes you have made thus far. Thank you for your time.

Who knows how to report someone for cheating on PS3? The qb glitch really needs to be fixed. I wasgoing to destroy a lvl 28 player, I'm level 19 cuz I keep getting cheaters, and on his first drive of the game its 4th and 40 and he qb glitches till he gets a TD, eventually getting me kicked for too many encoarchment calls. This needs to be fixed EA, and ban players who use it.

  • Poundtherock said April 02, 2009

Lol, good one!   I started to doubt that the cone was actually coming back because I wondered how/where you intended on locating the WR direct-look or pump fake control.  Ian, you are still going to put that feature in, I hope.  Right stick, as in NCAA, would work great!

The cone, R.I.P.   Be nice to see the weapons icons go the same way, hint, hint!

Love the info you guys are putting out on '10.   Keep up the good work.

Sidesheet:  Looking forward to my Gators match-up this year with your Vols and their new coach!

I think one of the things that would be GREAT for EA SPORTS and their website.....is DYNASTY/FRANCHISE Tracking.....i know there are some websites (avidmanager.com) that are AWESOME to do this, but it is also annoying to have to type in all of that information after every game.  If EA could sync it up that if you are connected to your account....everytime you save the game....it syncs up your "webpage" where you can access any an all kinds of information.  Including players that are no longer on your team......lots of records......team rankings......etc.    Then if there were requests or they wanted to make changes, then they could just change the website and not have to have a patch for the game.

  • B-Grizzle said April 02, 2009

Nef77 has a very good point. A ball that travels horizontally accross the field has alot better chance of getting picked and taken to the house, than a ball traveling verticle. People who scramble one way, and then pass to the other side of the field, should be penalized. It is idotic and never happens in the nfl.

  • patWILDCATwhite said April 02, 2009

when is EA going to stop focusing on gimmicky cosmetic advancements and finally start addressing the real problems in the gameplay?

That ANIMATION BLENDING technology should be used to blend the route running and catching animations.  The hyperspeed catches made by leading a pass to the outside need to be fixed.  ANIMATION BLENDING could help the receiver maintain a more realistic velocity while going for the ball.  Receivers should not be able get a burst of acceleration as they jump between animations.

How about savable online depth charts?

How about being able to save custom audibles for every playbook instead of just one?

How about making an online practice mode?

How about bringing back the CB swat drill?

How about bringing back coverage shading?

How about making it a little more difficult to read a defense than just by the way they break the huddle and line up?

How about stop giving quick small running backs the ability to shug off 300+ lbs linemen?  Speed is their advantage, not power.

How about telling me create my own defenses and use them online?  None of EA's defenses can stop a drag route.  THANKS!!!

BUT I CAN SEE HOW FIXING THE NUMBERS ON THE HELMET, THE CAPTAINS PATCHES, AND THE TOWEL ARE FAR BETTER THAN FIXING REAL ISSUES THAT NEED ADDRESSED.

oh, and how bout a game with no disconnect glitch, and no glitchs that give free touchdowns?  its that too much to ask?

YOUR FAILED ATTEMPTS TO FIX THIS GAME ARE PISSING EVERYONE OFF!!!!

  • southernmissfan2 said April 02, 2009

if u would pay attention they are fixing gameplay loser

  • CAMREN630 said April 02, 2009

only gish where have you been?all they have talked about is gameplay its been one report on presentation man you guys need to get it together and quit with your silly comments.

  • j2k9 said April 02, 2009

To add to the sideline catches, we need COLLISION DETECTION ON THE SIDELINES.  Players should not walk through players standing on the sidelines as in they don't exsist.  We also need collision detection for the endzone pilons.  Other than that I love what you guys are finally doing with the game this year.

  • j2k9 said April 02, 2009

EA, please bring back progressive lighting & shadowing!  It should be a must in football games!

  • stacks1212 said April 02, 2009

everyone on these comments need to relax madden doesnt come out untill like 4 months from now i feel this game is gonna be one of the great maddens. Ian keep up the good work

  • slydelvecio said April 03, 2009

Put qb vision back in. At least for online play. With the qb vision it makes a player need to actually have some skill, not just drop back and throw across feild while the D is covering the wrs on the side the qb is on. Also, add holding penalties when a player takes their qb and runs straight backwards to avoid a pass rush. If this happened in the NFL the DEs would go right around the OT and kill thr qb pretty much. DOn't allow this cheese inthe new game.

  • patWILDCATwhite said April 03, 2009

CAMREN, to my knowledge they havent addressed any of the things i mentioned.

If you have ever had Darren Sproles RUN OVER your defensive tackle, then you should be just as pissed as I am that the gameplay is not realistic.

Frankly, I'm terrified of what they are going to do with the wildcat.  The RB direct snap is already one of the most abused plays in the game.  Imagine an entire formation of nothing but RB direct snaps, with running backs that can break tackles that they have no business breaking.  I'm so tired of watching 5'9" 190 lbs skat backs run defensive linemen over.  The wildcat is only going to make this worse.

  • TreyIM2 said April 03, 2009

Oh, I missed out on that April Fools and luckily, I came to the EA site looking for some other game and stumbled onto this.

This is something I'm glad u guys are fixing and hopefully, the correct calls and instant replay challenges will go along with this cuz lord knows how many times an opponent or even myself have caught the ball out of bounds and it is deemed a completion, even after a challenge. This is a step in the right direction, though.

  • CAMREN630 said April 03, 2009

only gish all im saying is they have so much more time to work on the things you mentioned you are right though i hate when sproles or some other small back throws pat willams off of them.they probably will fix this problem without even telling  us.lets give them a little credit though they are giving us information early and i think they will put the best madden we ever seen,if they fix those horrible sidelines lol.

  • CAMREN630 said April 03, 2009

oh yes i also agree with that the wildcat will add so much cheese i do not want this in the game.

  • southernmissfan2 said April 03, 2009

the wildcat is a part of football and deserves to be in it but if they could fix the cheese its a great idea

  • j2k9 said April 03, 2009

EA, I hear that you guys are tweaking the player models this year.  If this is true, you really need to beef up a lot of players.  Overall players seem to be too small & skinny especially some of the wide receivers.  A lot of players arms are too skinny ie Brandon Marshall for example.  Dude has cannons for arms but in the game his arms are skinny.  Also some of the running backs need to have thicker thighs ie Marshawn Lynch & Brian Westbrook.  I hope you guys bring back the ZOOM CAMERA & CUSTOM CAMERA.  I like to be close to the action to get that immersion feeling.  Overall we need to be closer to the action on the field.  Instead of zooming the camera out after a play you should zoom in.  The closer the better. In real life NFL players are huge & we should get that feeling in Madden.

  • j2k9 said April 03, 2009

EA, whatever happened to the crowd & sideline cutscenes?  That was a great addition to the game.  Occasionally you should have a cutscene like when a Qb throws a pick you should show the coach chewing him out on the sideline.

  • southernmissfan2 said April 04, 2009

y would anybody want qb vision its retarded

  • southernmissfan2 said April 04, 2009

y would anybody want qb vision its retarded

  • CAMREN630 said April 04, 2009

becareful wat you guys ask for cause as soon as the wildcat is put in its going to be used and abused next thing we will be saying is take this out of madden 11.the top cheesers will exploit the wildcat making madden once again an none enjoyable experiance online.

  • deee96 said April 04, 2009

one more request make sure you dont forget to put the cowboys new stadium in the game go to their web site to see there plans and those world record size score boards

  • kilo559 said April 04, 2009

Is it possible to make a spectator option when viewing an online game instead of just the scoreboard?

  • brobans99 said April 04, 2009

Fix the disconnect issue with the ea network so I can get credit for my wins after the opponent quits.  In some cases I will get a win in the last 10 game result column but a loss for the overall record.  For $60.00, this does not seem much to ask for considering the fact that there is no reason to buy a new madden game except for the roster update and online play.

  • Trevor54 said April 04, 2009

Thank god because i dont like QB vision.

Can you guys add more big hits and different tackels and gang tackling and do a post on them? we do see that on sunday so you should add it to the game :)

  • NWCollapSe90 said April 04, 2009

When are you guys going to talk about D, ai ho zones are weak. they only cover there "blades of grass" play maker / no huddle. no counter.

  • JGshocker22 said April 04, 2009

Where is the toe drag? that is what you need if you want this game to be more authentic.

  • KRYP2NITE4 said April 05, 2009

how kool would it be if u couild sit in the crowd (FIRTST PESON VIEW) wit the fans and watch ur friend play somebody online!? IMAGINE THAT!

  • sconn1 said April 05, 2009

for the umpteenth time...you can toedrag in 9...it's not easy, but it can be done. before you catch a ball on the sidelines, jam the right stick towards the opposite side as you are catching on.

  • Bruno315 said April 05, 2009

if could fix the tackling in and out of bounds and how the clock will and won't stop, if the player is tackled in bounds but the animation brings him out of bounds then the clock should stop (when the rules deem it appropriate), i'm watching a game right now where that hasn't happened three times.

  • Sgt Sparrowhawk said April 05, 2009

we should bring back tony bruno from the ps2 versions of yesteryear.

and as i play in england i play receiver, DE, kicker and punter. we should be able to do this sorta stuff in madden and be able to play multiple positions instead of the basic ones like WR to CB or kickers being qb's, TE-FB etc

  • warrior310 said April 05, 2009

at this point i care about gameplay not graphics  ea has had the  best graphics so far but where is the gameplay, presentation, etc... come on guys.

Honestly, less the colors hindering your vision, not a bad concept at all. I've caught up on all the posts, and somehow every year I am impressed on the details captured. I could not be happier about the direction the title is taking, because I've been a sim player from the first copy. I do what to point out however, I have purchased both PS2 & PS3 copies each of the last 2 yrs because the gameplay of the PS2 is superior. The speed and feel, or responsiveness on the 3 pales in comparison. The X- Box version trumps PS3 as well and I'd like to avoid that this year. My console & brand allegiance is like a gangbanger's so although I never play any game that's not EA, I've ventured to the darkside and played X-Box. It appears the responsiveness has been addressed this year, along with game speed sliders, but don't let me down this year! I hope I've purchased my last current gen title ever! Superior work again fellas, because these posts are enticing!
