Weighing In: 2nd Roster Release

Posted On: Apr. 13, 2009 4:21 PM EST By: sk88z 38 Comments

By Jason Thompson

It just keeps getting better.  The latest reveal of the Fight Night Round 4 (FNR4) boxing roster has taken me from excited to… downright giddy.  Would I pay $100 for this game?  Yep.  $200?  Probably.  I can admit this because I have been assured that regular video game pricing will be applied for FNR4. (If they only released four or five FNR4 games and eBay-ed them I would go broke).  Anybody that knows me knows that this release would be my favorite.  Kelly Pavlik is my favorite boxer and I was very worried he would not be in the game.  I am worrying no more.  Will “raczilla” Kinsler and I have spent hours arguing over who is better, Pavlik or his favorite Jermain “Bad Intentions” Taylor.  Raczilla refuses to acknowledge history (PAVLIK IS 2-0 VERSUS TAYLOR WILL!) but now, with the newest roster reveal, we both know we will settle this debate where it needs to be settled… in FNR4.  BRING IT WILL!

What do I think of the latest five boxers that will be in FNR4?  Glad you asked.

Roy Jones, Jr.: Before Roy Jones, Jr. I had never heard of the title “best pound for pound boxer”.  Junior was so good they actually invented a title for him!  Junior was, and may still be, the closest thing to a video game athlete in boxing.  Power? Check.  Lightning speed?  Check.  Showmanship? BIG check.  Do yourself a favor and go to www.youtube.com right now and type his name in.  Now I hope you know what I mean.  He is “Mr. Unstoppable”.  The Fight Night series would not be the same without him.

Sergio “The Snake” Mora:  Also known as the “Latin Snake” I can say that, in all honesty, this guy is one of the coolest dudes in the game.  He is brutally honest when you talk to him about boxing and one of the funniest guys to be around.  The fight game is better for him in it.  When we hosted the FNR4 community day he took a very real and honest interest in the Fight Night community and offered the FNR4 design team tremendously valuable insight into making FNR4.  It was no surprise that he named Roberto Duran his favorite boxer of all time when I asked him because, as he said, Duran had that toughness you see so often in Mexican fighters.  He is tough.  He works very hard.  He knows the game.  Now, his is “In the Game” and this is a HUGE add.  He was the best in Ray Leonard’s “The Contender” and on June 27th he faces Kelly Pavlik.  He is an underdog in that fight but Mora has always been the underdog.  Something tells me that the Pavlik fight will be the best fight of 2009.

Kelly “The Ghost” Pavlik:  Pavlik fights with a style that I for one find VERY entertaining.  He’s tough and can pop his opponent with every shot in the book.  His defense is a relentless offense.  He throws shots in bunches and works inside and out with equal proficiency.  Did he stumble against Bernard Hopkins?  Yes.  But he was going up in weight and I think fighting at 160 which is clearly his natural and most effective weight.  He brings it every minute of every round.

Vinny “The Pazmanian Devil” Paz:  Paz won title belts at lightweight, junior middleweight and super middleweight.  He was a very likeable boxer who had power and undeniable toughness in the ring.  He was dominated by Roy Jones, Jr. but did beat Roberto Duran.  Paz is one of those guys you are going to fight as in FNR4 especially with the ability to work “inside” because the Pazmanian Devil was very strong.

Jermain “Bad Intentions” Taylor:  Taylor has always been a visibly talented fighter.  He beat Bernard Hopkins in 2005 and that win really put Taylor in the map as an exceptional boxer.  He has a long reach and does put on a great show.  He obviously struggled against Pavlik losing both fights (I really hope you are reading this raczilla) and had a draw against Winky Wright but showed in every fight rarely seen flashes of power and quickness.  He is only 30 and I for one think he is the type of fighter that can dominate in FNR4.

I think the newest five boxers in FNR4 add a lot of dimension and excitement to FNR4.  What do you think?

You do know that the pound for pound award wasn't created for Roy Jones right? Everyone knows that Ray Robinson was the first pound for pound best fighter.

  • Merovengean said April 13, 2009

Is it just me, or did anyone else catch the full roster that was posted earlier today. It included Holyfield and others. I was very elated. THans FNR4

  • MadGifted said April 13, 2009

Oh, so there's a full roster update? Cool. Oh, and umm...no offense to the dude who posted this blog. But just so you know...Robero Duran isn't Mexican. Also Roy Jones wasn't the reason the pound for pound thing was created. That was Ray Robinson.

  • MadGifted said April 13, 2009

LOL...I thought my post ain't go through. Double post...sorry, y'all.

  • Well Loved said April 13, 2009

Hey guys Roster is shaping up well. but talking about shaping up, looks like some of your boxers have been eating too many donuts. Why are Taylor & Pavlik so big around the waist, especially Pavlik he's tall thin and wirery plus he doesn’t have all that muscle tone. I’m hoping you guys have enough time to iron that out because it would hinder the game esthetics. Would like to see Cotto, Paul Williams & Mayweather in the game.

  • Ruman E3 said April 14, 2009

Good rosters but still a bit edgy

I want Prince Naseeem Hamed and Floyd Mayweather

The people that saw the earlier post, can you tell me if these 2 fighters are in the game

  • PARKDRIVESFINEST said April 14, 2009

I am a huge fight night fan iand i have been since it all began with knockout kings 2001. But by the time it is all said and done, i hope that pretty boy aka "Money Mayweather" is in the line up. I mean hell he is the guy to beat other than paccio. He has set the bar real high for fighters and he definitely needs to be in the game. And what about Zab judah????

  • corvette69s said April 14, 2009

Hey Dreadhawk36, thanks for sharing what you know from the roster you got to see. I would like to know where you saw this list, but I guess we will all know in a month or so.

Even though these fighters haven't been released officially I have seen either pictures or video of them:

    Ricky "Hitman" Hatton

    Tommy "The Hitman" Hearns

    Arturo "Thunder" Gatti

    Ronald "Winky" Wright

    Tommy "The Duke" Morrison

I caught Hearns vs Gatti for the preview for Thursdays GTV show, Hatton can be seen in the first Pazienza screen, Winky can be seen in the Mora screens, and Morrison has been seen in the new physics video fighting Jones Jr (also in a screen with LennOx Lewis).

Dreadhawk, you said you saw Holyfield and Cotto were on that list. Do you recall any other big names (Say Marciano, Holmes, Robinson, Judah, LaMotta, Ward, Leonard, Hagler, Duran, Calzaghe, Barrera, Pacquiao, Morales, Chavez, Marquez, Corrales, Mayweather, Pep, Basilio, etc)?

  • crphicks said April 15, 2009

come on guys!!!what about more top British fighters this time??? i,e

Joe Calzaghe (was a top p4p for crying out loud)

    Prince Naseem Hamed

    Barry McGuigan

    Nigel Ben

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO THE PAZMANIAN DEVILLLLLLLL  one of my favorite boxer verry good choice ea

  • Lilzo_wood said April 16, 2009

I'm not very happy with the rosters because they need to put more of the great boxers on this game so people can have a better experience, like where is Floyd Mayweather? He went undeafeated, Bernard Hopkins, Holyfield, Glen Johnson, Leon Spinks, Antonio Tarver? They need to add every boxer for it to be a perfect game.

  • Lilzo_wood said April 16, 2009

    Oscar De La Hoya

  • GHsu said April 16, 2009

i'd love to see more modern fighters. it's probably too late now, since the roster is set, just not revealed yet, but i think that it would not only help the sport of boxing if more modern fighters were being publicized in a video game, but it would give us something to relate to in current terms. boxing is different from a lot of other sports in that it's individual, so unlike Madden, for example, you don't get a fresh roster and rookies every season. however, it would still be nice to have all the current boxers out there so you could do a Pacquiao vs Hatton fight or have the Klitschko brothers fight each other. don't get me wrong, i love the idea of Tyson vs Ali or Tyson vs Frazier, but it'd be nice to have a lot of realistic matchups (in terms of time period) rather than just having a game based mostly on fantasy matchups of fighters across all eras.

basically what i'm trying to say: i like to see the older fighters, i'd just like to see a bigger selection of current/modern fighters.

  • GHsu said April 16, 2009

and i forgot... i saw this idea posted somewhere and i thought it could be an excellent idea: i'd like to see extra boxers available in the PS store (or Xbox Live store... whatever) for people who want certain boxers who weren't originally in the game. it could be a good idea for EA, to make some more money with the same game, so that they can pay for the endorsement charges that certain stars undeniably demand (e.g. Floyd MONEY Mayweather). i just think it'd be a great way for people whose favorite boxers are not in the game (like me, if Mayweather is not in the game) to get them, even if it costs a little money, and for those who don't care, they don't have to shell out any extra cash to get them. i think it'd be a very nice option to consider.

  • dreadhawk36 said April 17, 2009

check out the video on gametrailer....you'll see atleast 10-12 more boxers...keep em coming EA:)

  • PATFINEST54 said April 17, 2009

    where is floyd mayweather

  • Well Loved said April 18, 2009

OK, after watching the video on gametrailers.com here are my comments. Its seems like on some video footage the fighters look cartoony, while on the physics engine video they look amazing. Hope that the final version we get to play looks more like the physics engine video. Second, I hope there are many different gameplay camera options because I don't like the hurky jurky camera on the gametrailers.com video its distracting and seems arcady. REAL happy about Cotto & Hearns being in the game but Malignaggi..? and Gamboa hasn't fought anybody yet. I'm starting to worry that sure hall of famers Dela Hoya, Mosley & Mayweather won't be in the game, I'm sure you brought back Lamotta and Ray Robinson if you didn't that would be a sin.

  • Vannexel said April 18, 2009

Yeah the P4P was for Sugar Ray Robinson. RJJR just held the title also.More media. I love RJJR so I'm not badmouthing him. Pls keep the option to switch button configurations. I gotta be able to jab when I need to jab and hokk when it calls for it. Nothing was wrong with judge jab or sinister cross. They just made me adjust my strategy. Watch for the right hand!!.
