Top 5 things you should know about the Madden NFL Draft Experience

Posted On: Apr. 20, 2009 5:46 PM EST By: raczilla 42 Comments

We're now less than a week away from the Madden NFL 10 Draft Experience on the official Madden NFL 10 product website.  During the NFL Draft on Saturday April 25th, the website will feature a live, streaming draft analysis show produced right from Madden headquarters in Orlando, Florida.   As players are selected, their official Madden NFL 10 ratings will be released and discussed live.  The website will also feature dynamic polls, social networking feeds, photos from the NFL Draft, and live blogs from the Madden NFL 10 player ratings team.

To make sure you are as informed as possible about everything happening during the Madden NFL 10 Draft Experience, here are five things you should know going into the Draft on Saturday.

#5 Madden NFL Draft Experience Talk on Twitter.  We're already talking about the Madden NFL Draft Experience on Twitter, a popular micro-blogging/social network site.  You can follow me on twitter here,  I'll be posting updates live from the Tiburon studio during the Draft and am already taking part in some early Madden Draft discussion leading up to the day of the show.  Our Madden ratings guru Donny Moore is also on Twitter, so follow him and take part in some of his early Draft and ratings speculation.  We're using a special #maddendraft tag for all of our Twitter discussion, so please post #maddendraft in any of your Twitter posts talking about the Draft or Madden NFL 10 ratings.

#4 Check out the preview videos.  We've posted some great video content that will help give you an idea of what to expect to see during the Madden NFL Draft Experience.  Go here to see some of our War Room discussion over the last week and here to see a trailer video for the Draft Experience show.

#3 Mock Drafts and Pre Draft Discussion all week on EA SPORTS Live.  Donny Moore has been visiting us all week on EA SPORTS Live to talk about the Draft.  Today he talked about some of the top quarterbacks in this year's Draft class.  You can listen to the rest of his segments each day this week on EA SPORTS Live.   Click here every weekday at 3:00 p.m. eastern to listen to EA SPORTS Live.  Donny has also posted mocks of both the first and second rounds of the Draft, so be sure to check those out as well.

#2 What about the screens and ratings?  For several years now we've posted screens of the first round of incoming rookies to the Madden NFL website.  Not only will we do that again, we'll also feature their ratings live during the Draft for the first time ever!  Screens will be posted for the first round players and ratings will be posted and discussed for both the first and second rounds.  You'll also have the chance to share your opinions about the ratings in the comments of some live blogs we'll post to the website.  Madden ratings guru Donny Moore will be reading and posting to the blogs throughout the day, so let him know what you think of how he's rated the players.  Since the ratings aren't 100% final, you might even be able to influence him if you make some good points in the comments.

#1 Who, when, and where?  You'll see the Thompson brothers and Donny Moore all day long on the show, but we've got some special guests in attendance as well.  Former All-Pro tight end and current NFL analyst Shannon Sharpe will be in the studio to share his thoughts on the Draft, and NFL stars Matt Ryan, DeSean Jackson, and Matt Forte will call in to the show to talk about their own Draft day experiences.  We'll have a few more NFL experts and gaming site media members call in during the day and some of the Madden NFL dev team will be watching the Draft from our EA SPORTS Draft Day War Room.

The most important thing to know of course is when and where to see everything.  The show begins at 3:30 p.m. eastern this coming Saturday the 25th on the Madden NFL 10 product site.  But even before that we'll have some Draft coverage from New York later this week right here on the Inside EA SPORTS Blog.  Stay tuned to both sites in the coming days to make sure you don't miss all of the great Madden NFL 10 Draft coverage.

if you have any questions about our plans for the Draft, feel free to post them in the comments and we'll do our best to answer them right away.  See you Saturday!

This is small and it might not matter, but last years rookies alot of there equipment and size displays where off not all but alot, and it made them untrue to the real player. I'm a Cowboys fan and Felix Jones ,scandrick,Jenkins where not accurate, mostly with Helmet stles and facemask . Maybe Madden10 will have all helmet styles I'll keep my fingers crossed..

Also I would suggest when you do a ratings update through the year do a equipment update as well alot of the rookies change equipment when the turn Pro..

As for the Draft day events, everything you have planned sounds really cool, can't wait.

Thanks for letting us share our ideas and concerns

I'm looking foward to it. NFL Draft day has always been special, now it will be more so thanks to everyone at EA Sports.

  • raczilla said April 20, 2009

Thanks for the feedback Romo, and for following some of the discussion on Twitter.  :)

Since the game is not final, it's possible you could see a couple inconsistencies in the equipment on the Draft day screens.  If that happens, feel free to let us know and we'll double check to make sure those items are due to be added or corrected prior to release.

  • EA_DonnyMoore said April 20, 2009

FYI - All 2009 Rookie Player equipment is based off of their 09 college football season pics.

  • 1113_maan said April 20, 2009

man this will be a treat, i just moved to america from australia and could never watch the draft live, now i can and EA sports are giving me the icing on the cake that which is my life. thank you for making my day guys, just like every other monday

  • 1113_maan said April 20, 2009

O I also forgot to suggest that when in franchise mode doing a fantasy draft in madden 09, you could not pick players that are free agents. its annoying not being able to pick some decent players just because they were unsigned when the madden game was created. also bring back the massive amount of customization you could do to a player, like over 500 different faces, with tattoos, hair, etc. but adding more innovative designs that would cover just about all the types of people out there. you don't have to go overboard to make it better but a little bit goes a long way. catch me on xbox live my gamertag is: nik majikmaan

  • jellybean3454 said April 20, 2009

i think you guys are doin a great job but there is room for improvement but i totally love what you guys are doin this year but make sure PEYTON MANNING gets on the cover he deserves it and people will get off my case b/c they are some people who say PEYTON MANNING trash just b/c he never was on a madden cover

and add online franchise i believe that'll give us a dynamic play to the game and its a next step to added realism to the game, and madden 10 better fit the motto what you see on sunday see it in the game and i shouldn't have to explain what i see on sunday b/c i'll be all day on here and another note better equipment like cleats and the brady cut arm sleeves, options to wear hand warmer and sleeves during cold games or not, more cleats, better hair style b/c i dont like it when its tied up

matter fact have a option where they ask you do you wanna wear any type of equipment in all weathers say for intense if raining gloves or no gloves of black cleats or white cleats

thanks for taking the time out to read if you did read love what ya'll are doing with the game this year

  • jellybean3454 said April 20, 2009

thats not true all equipment isn't based off college pics from 09 b/c on madden 09 most cornerbacks had a revolution helmet and linemans had half cage facemasks so really the equipment isn't based on college pics- FYI

i have a very important question for the Dev Team:...u guys(the EA Dev team) have been showing the world new screen shots of the players and the new things added into madden10.... But i have been asking and reminding u(the EA Dev team) to put the Playoff logo and the NFC/AFC logos on the field during the playoffs because it is crucial to making the playoffs feel like the PLAYOFFS. it will make the stadium invironment feel like a REAL playoff atmosphere wen u play the game...

if the NFL PLAYOFF logo and the NFC/AFC logos have been added into the madden10, can u guys PLEASE give us a screen shot of it?? or can u just tell us that it will be in the game this year?? PLEASE!...u guys (the Dev team) told and shown the world about the hand towls and the hand warmers, and all i am asking is for the EA Dev Team to please show us madden fans a screen shot of the logos if it has been added into the game...

EA Development team, can u guys please show us a screen shot of the playoff logos on the field?? Or Please tell me that it has been added to madden10!! That is ALL i ask for! Please let us know EA!

this draft thing seems really exciting

but, i also wanted to ask you if there is a chance to make the NFL Superstar mode playable online...so we, players get to play only with our guys...really simulating what being an nfl player is, playin against human beings and not AI...presonally i think that would be awesome!

Maybe not this year but maybe next or the following, i dont know.

And, by the way, pics look really cool this year.

I just want to see one of my 'Boys and D-Ware.

  • EddiePina2991 said April 20, 2009

oh and also, i think you should add more branching animations, like air tackles or something like that, because i'm playing right now and...i just let a 16 yarder by Steven Jackson because his blocker tried to cut block me and he missed but Steven Passed right by my side and my player was still in the block-shed animation, tat would help gameplay a bit

  • JSTEVENS38 said April 20, 2009

the pics all look awesome, starting to look like the best madden/football game yet, im loving all the visual and gameplay improvements yall are making this year

that said, i posted a comment/idea on one of the first, the one yall said about the DB having to look at the ball to INT or bat it down, wondering if yall thought about having the DB throw his arms in the air when trailing and watching the reciever, like i said, as i was coached, if im behind the reciever, by watching his eyes or hands i can know to throw my arms in the air or where his hands in an attempt to have the ball bounce off me or obstruct his vision

everything looks awesome but that'd be cool if yall put that in

  • bladewings said April 21, 2009

    Hey Guy's

With the Lion's having the first overall pick in the draft are you guys going to be able to use the new logo they just came out with yesterday for this year's game let alone with what the first pick overall in the draft is going to be??

The new logo on the helmets are sweet and would really like to see them in the game this year

  • xXxMaddenKilaxXx said April 21, 2009

Why would anyone choose to watch video game designers talk about the draft instead of NFL Network or ESPN?

I have come to terms with the fact that EA has no clue hot to rate players.  I'm definitely not going to listen to anything they have to say about the draft after they MADE THE RAIDERS THE BEST TEAM IN MADDEN 09.

  • xXxMaddenKilaxXx said April 21, 2009

sblade.  i dislike the lions new logo.  its way too complicated.  too many little swooshes all over the place.  maybe it will look better if they win a game.

  • Bee Rockwell said April 21, 2009

I know there's someone up there who's endlessly nagging you guys about playoff logos, and even with all the NFL Draft hype this week, I hope it's a concern the development team is taking to heart. It's a great feeling when you finally get to the playoffs in a franchise, and we'd like that moment to feel a bit more authentic. Logo's on the field should be no problem, and a custom pre-game schpeil would also go a long way to adding realism. What about printing the logo on towels, and having them distributed to the crowd? I'm assuming the animation would be a nightmare, but it's just a thought.

But yes, playoff logos, more pomp and circumstance!

  • AJHawk50 said April 21, 2009

I just thought of another one of my complaints, or wishes with the game and figured I'd post it here since this is the newest football post up as of right now.

Add a practice squad into franchise, or something equivalant. We only have a maximum of players but reality is that all franchises have development players, etc. at their disposal.

Also, I think if a player is signed to a roster in his stats it should say for example GB instead of N/A or whatnot if he didn't play in any games.  If he was employed by the team in the first place it should say the team in his stats.

And lastly, the option to put ANY player at ANY position.  If I want to put Devin Hester at RB, let me be able to.  If I want to put a WR at DB or DB at WR to try it out, let me without having to change his position.  Players swap around all the time in the league, or Seneca Wallace at WR.

  • jellybean3454 said April 21, 2009

i cant say enough how happy i am about what ya'll are doin i cant wait till saturday to hear alot of cool stuff about madden, but 49ers are taking mark sanchez in the first round they need a qb and plus they can get an o lineman on the free agents or the draft and plus they can get marvin harrison and amani toomer off the free agents and plus draft a rookie wr and he could learn a lesson from them two veterans, thats a great idea for 49ers i believe thats just what their going to do but they might not grab amani toomer that was just another good thing to do though

  • TheSteelers said April 21, 2009

ok jellybean...u kinda cant tell the dev team what they based the ratings on since they kinda made the game.....

  • jellybean3454 said April 21, 2009

FYI TheSteelers i wasnt talking about the ratings i was talking about the equipment b/c most of all the cb rookies have a revo and most of all the o-line rookies have half cages, and he had said they based the players equipment off of college pics and i dont think most cornerbacks in college last year wore revo or most rookie line last year didnt wear half cages in college

and i know you wasnt strating a problem but you must of understood wrong what i was saying, you see now

  • Normady said April 21, 2009

hey raczilla what ever happened to your gamer journal, you should keep it up

  • Normady said April 21, 2009

and by the way, i think that larry fitzgerald deserves to be on the cover, i mean he was just great last year, and if santonio holmes didn't make an amazing catch, he would be super bowl mvp, and certainly the only possible choice for the madden cover

  • SJD20 said April 21, 2009

  • DraftGuy said April 22, 2009

My message is so long that it will take a couple post to get it all included.

I don't know if this is the place or blog for this suggestion but can not find a better place to make this comment. I am a huge Madden fan and spend all day on Sat and Sun playing Madden. I like to play online a bunch and recently have gotten interested in the Draft League option for online play. It is a lot of fun picking your team for certain type of players to fit a system. I realize that the only practical way to do the draft league is how it is set up already where you pick player and position rankings.

However, if I could make one change to the game it would be the ability to have an actual draft where online players see who has been drafted, who is available and other more specific info like draft order and so on. It would be similar to a Franchise draft screen in my mind. This would be too time consuming to do for a full 53 round draft but if there was the option to do a draft like this for the first 10 rounds or so and then switch back to the current draft setup it would be awesome. Maybe make it one of the options for a GM when creating a league. Also an option for the amount of rounds to be held like an actual draft could be an option so that GM’s could make only a certain amount of rounds this time consuming way. You could make the time in a round very short so people had to make quick decisions to move the draft along. I would guess somewhere around 30 seconds to a minute for each player’s turn to draft. This way of drafting would be much more time consuming compared to the current system but an improvement in my mind. There are multiple problems that I am running into with the current system.

  • DraftGuy said April 22, 2009

Example: I usually pick a WR first preference CB second preference on the first and second round of the draft. The problem comes in the 2nd to 10th rounds. If I got a WR in the first, then I do not want to draft a WR in the second and vice versa with a CB. However I want to take the best player available at both spots pre draft, other wise I would pick WR first and second preference in the first round, CB first and second preference in the second. This would avoid picking two CB or two WR in the first two rounds but limits the ability to get the best player available. If players had the ability to control who I could pick after the draft had started it would increase online player’s abilities to get the team they really want.

I know it is a little late to be asking for changes this major for Madden10 but any feed back on this would be really appreciated. If you could give me a response as to what the Madden10 team feels about this at the email linked to my EA account DraftGuy, it would be amazing of you guys. I know you are really busy working on the game but this is an issue that I hear almost every time I am part of a draft league. Thank You

  • Bee Rockwell said April 22, 2009

Also, the issue of NFL 2k5 keeps coming up. That game, even tough it's already five years old, had a legitimate Sportscenter broadcast at the end of your week in franchise mode, with halftime highlights, pre and post-game broadcasts, and a player of the game interview on the field. Why can this not be added to Madden 10? With the improvement in graphics and the gameplay tweaks, this would be the final piece to the puzzle in creating the ultimate football video game!

Please integrate ESPN with highlight packages, broadcasts, analysis, interviews, etc. We want to feel like we're playing with the actual NFL product, and that stuff is such an integral part of modern football it cannot be ignored.

Sorry if this wasn't the best place for this, just desperate to be heard and obsessed with Madden. Can't wait to trade in 09 for 10.

  • MooseNamedChaz said April 22, 2009

this year on madden, and even future years, could we have more commentators rather than just the one set, because chris collingsworth got annoying after a few games when you're listening to the same thing over and over again

even having two (but preferably 3) would be ok.

  • xXmEgAtrOnXxDK said April 22, 2009

Raczilla, will the new uniforms be in the game? Because the Jaguars just announced theri new jerseys, as well as the Lions and probably the 49ers.

    Thanks,

By the way, the Jags also added some type of glitter to their helmets, it looks teal in LIGHT. So maybe this could be added for it?

    BTW, I'm a Jags fan.

    Thanks again!

Its His name on the game and im really gonna miss his broadcasts. i all ready miss his voice not being more involved in the next gen games. we will miss you John!

  • jellybean3454 said April 22, 2009

ya'll have to let us pick what we wanna choose to challenge on a challenge play, like ya'll could probably just have a list on things that could be challenged b/c ya'll what know the things we are trying to challenge, so just have a list like these options pop up all the time you go to challenge

    two feet in bounds

two feets didnt get in bounds

    short of 4th down

    got 4th down

    ball touch ground no catch

    ball didnt touch ground

    etc.

i made this exact comment on the NCAA side of thing and since it involves the madden side i might as well say it here too. i am a huge video game footballer love what you guys are doing and have done both on NCAA and Madden.  one nice little thing would be in campus legend mode when importing to madden instead of having an already set of players get drafted accordingly to who YOU think will go have the players who performed well get drafted accordingly. ex- Temple quarterback probably won't really get drafted but if you played campus legend and were on Temple and the qb did extremely well, finished high in heisman voting then he should be on the draft list for madden in the year he declares eligible and so forth.  just a thought, maybe hard to do but worth a look.  same goes for you as the campus legend if you declare after four years than it should be in the forth year of madden when you get drafted. so in the superstar mode it should sim through the years and place the appropriate players according to the sims.  etc-Colts may fall from grace and have the first pick in the draft year your created player is eligible and pick you first overall if that's where you deserved to be picked.  like i said this may take way too much time to be able to do this year but worth a look in future years.  definitley would be more realistic.

I love everything about madden nfl 10, but i would like for you all to put specific running styles back in madden because for example. in madden nfl 09 jamal lewis runs the ball funny. But in Madden nfl 08, he ran like he was suppose to by barely picking up his feet. The game will be better if you put the "SPECIFIC RUNNING STYLES" back in madden.

  • JoeyJoJoJrShabdu said April 24, 2009

Madden 2010, wow, can't beleive how long I have been playing this game.  I miss the "local newspaper cover stories" in the season mode.  My friends and I like to play what we call "pro pick 'em" during the NFL Draft and pre-superbowl where we do a fantasy draft on the season mode and then sim all the games to see who has the best drafted team.  It is geeky but fun for us.  Why can't we watch the game play out like on 2007?  It only allows us to Supersim and not watch the simmed games in 2009.  Also, I love the online mode but there should be more stats tracked for online games only (similar to the stats available for the season mode).  The "all-time rankings" need to be brought back also so that we get credit for our ranking from prior years.  Also, it has turned into a pass-heavy game again and the online gamers only run once in a while.  Need to have run and pass more balanced.  Blitz also was virtually eliminated in 2009 so need to bring back the blitz - that's one of the things that makes Madden fun!  Great work!!!
