Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 10: Wii Motion Plus functionality

Posted On: Apr. 21, 2009 12:59 AM EST By: raczilla 14 Comments

Hi everyone, I’m Jay Shenkman Senior Producer for Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 for the Wii.  Wow!  What a difference a year makes.  I just finished up 18 holes on Bethpage (Black) and I can honestly say I LOVE playing this game!  I’m using the new Wii MotionPlus which, of course, if you haven’t already heard is fully integrated into Tiger Wii this year.  This is the closest we’ve come to delivering a true golf experience and it shows in the intense competitions we’re having around here.  Each round is a unique experience and that’s not easy to say when you play this game as much as I do.  Very soon you’ll get to see what I’m talking about for yourselves but before that, let me clue you in on a few of the things the Wii MotionPlus accessory adds to the game.

The first thing you’ll notice is the 1:1 swing.  You’ll know you’re not in Kansas anymore the minute you pop the Wii MotionPlus onto the bottom of your Wii Remote and start to move.  The 1:1 backswing is near perfect and it feels great.  To give you even more of a feeling of control we’ve added a 1:1 forward swing.  The combination of these two things ensures that your golfer moves the same way you do from start to finish.  This is true even if you don’t follow all the way through.  So what does that get me you ask?  Well, how about no more miss hits for one thing.  Gone are the days where a slight jitter of the Wii Remote might be interpreted as a swing.  That alone could add a few strokes back on to your score.  It also gets you the ability to hit low power shots.  I can now hit a 1% shot off the tee if I want to and watch the ball slowly roll for a measly few yards.  Unfortunately I do that regularly on a real golf course but I assure you it would have to be by choice in Tiger Wii.  Now I doubt you’ll ever want to do that off the tee but this comes in real handy when you’re off in the mulch somewhere and just want to punch out onto the fairway.  If you have the right club (gotta watch the loft!) you may no longer need to change your shot type to “Punch”.  Keeping it on “Full” and taking a low power shot will get the job done.  It also means you have much more control than in the past, giving you a better chance at hitting 20 or 30% shots, so you no longer need to change club so often.

Next is Draw/Fade.  This is one of my favorite new things to do with the MotionPlus and I use it all the time.  Draw/Fade is now nearly 100% consistent.  The mechanic is the same as past titles in that we simulate draw/fade by the rotation of the Wii Remote on your follow through.  But you have much more control now.  Thanks to the Wii MotionPlus we can now read very accurately how you’re rotated in 3D space when you swing through the ball.  A slight rotation will result in a slight draw or fade as will a more extreme rotation end up in a greater draw or fade.  It is fantastically consistent and once you get the hang of it you’ll have no need to avoid those doglegs anymore.  This new system is also what makes the game challenging.  As I’m sure you’ve pieced together by now from my comments that if you are not straight when going through the ball you may not hit it straight.  While it’s not hard to hit the ball on a good line this does increase the need to concentrate when swinging just as you would in real life.

And last but certainly not least is the massive improvement to putting.  The putting in this game is hands down the closest to real life putting that you’ve seen in a video game.  The basic premise is identical to real life.  The distance your ball will travel is based on a combination of backswing length and the tempo of your downswing.  If you hit the ball too soft it will not travel far.  If you hit it hard it will travel further.  You do this with a single long range putter.  We call this “Precision Putting” and it will change the way you play this game.  We’ve even added the ability to push or pull a ball when putting by reading the rotation the Wii Remote on your downswing.  Of course we realize that there are many of you out there that may prefer the multiple putter system that was in last year’s game.  This is now called “Classic Putting” and is an option that is available to you should you choose to use it.  You can switch putting styles at any time in the game.

I’ll also take a minute to mention that the Wii MotionPlus controls will blow you away when using it with our new Disc Golf feature.  It allows you to pick up a disc from off the ground and throw it in almost any way that you could in real life.  No restrictions.  When you pick up the disc and start rotating your wrists you will see your motion replicated the exact same way on screen.  It’s really quite incredible and it’s something that could not be achieved in such a precise manner without the Wii MotionPlus.  That said the game can be played and is very enjoyable without it as well.

So now that I’ve told you how great the controls are with the Wii MotionPlus, I’m going to try to anticipate some of your questions.  Does all of this make the game hard and can I play without the Wii MotionPlus?  Let me address this.  It’s not too hard at all.  The game is customizable to the nth degree.  You can choose from “All-Play”, Standard or Advanced swing style.  Each one being more challenging than the next.  You can choose from 2 putting styles that offer different mechanics (Classic /Precision) and you can choose to play with or without the Wii MotionPlus.  There is no advantage to using any of these or to playing without the Wii MotionPlus.  Well, maybe there is an advantage to using All-Play.   Each style presents its own challenges and the difficulty of each will be determined by how you, the user, adjusts to using it.  We also allow you to turn visual aids such as putt preview and the putt meter off.  You will need to find the style that suits you best.  Personally I like to play on advanced swing with the Wii MotionPlus.  This means the putt preview line is turned off and then I manually turn off the putt meter so I have no visual aid other than the putting grid on the ground and a recommended power %.   As a matter of fact I don’t even look at the screen when I putt because I have mastered the proper backswing and tempo to get the power that I need.  It’s just me against the green and it feels very real to me.

So with all this we’re really excited for you to get your hands on the game so you can experience what we’ve been enjoying for several months now.  This is also just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to what’s new in Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 10.  You can be sure we’ll keep you posted with more feature blogs and press releases until the game comes out.  In the meantime, I’m headed back in game for another 18 holes.  This time I think I’ll try my luck on TPC Sawgrass.

See you on the links in a few months!

Thanks for the update, Jay. Looking forward to see what the motionPlus adds to the game! Any word on new features for the online experience for wii players?! We're dying to know if more game modes will be offered, as well as an option to play with different settings online.

Jay. This is a nice update. I hope the final few months of work on Tiger Woods 10 goes nicely. Judging from the pics here, the graphics have gotten a nice upgrade.

I am stoked about the wii plus value package and I am now proud of EA and their dedication to the wii sports genre this year.

    Thank you.

Good post man....I know the disc golf was a lot of fun at the CD

I've seen some of the updated screen shots on the blog, but I'm guessing the comparison shots are from the Xbox, and not the wii.  Any chance we can see some compared screen shots of improved graphics from Woods 09 to 10 on the wii?

From the look we got at Community Day I'd say this is going to be one heck of a good game.

Just making that swing with the Motion Plus is the closest I've ever come to real golf with a video game.

You guys got this one right.Congrats to you and your team Jay.

Now I might just have to go out and buy a Wii...lol

To all my XBox 360 golf mates, you'll be seeing less of me.  I'm going to be playing alot more Wii this year.  Great job with the game Jay!

I'm very impressed with what I've seen of the Wii version in the videos. That was a smart move to show the limited follow through and the resultant low trajectory shot! That's where you get anally retentive golf purists like me's attention! :-)I'm also stoked by hearing Jason and Rob Thompson's reaction to it on EA Sports Live, when Randy Chase was on a few days ago! I'm not a Wii owner, but this is puching me closer to becoming one.

Would it be appropriate to ask in this blog if the Wii version will have the same camera presentations options as the 360 and PS3 versions?

Jay, can you send me a few cheat codes, or anyone else? How about some passwords? I love the new game and the motion plus, this should help me in my real life game.

    Thanks,

I purchased Tiger Woods PGA 10 with Motion+ last weekend and bought a Motion+ add-on for a second controller.  I can't get the second controller (which I've used a lot with Wii Sport) to sync with the new game.  I called my local Best Buy where I purchased the game and so far no one there has been able to figure it out either.  How do I enable the second controller?

While 2010 is a big improvement (still can't get a legitimate answer as to why putting in 2009 was done the way it was), I still have issues with low power shots.  I am using the Wii Motion device and standard swing.  Sometimes it works great.  Other times, I can take a slow quarter swing with a wedge and still get a 100% swing (not fun).  Seems like there is still much room for improvement here. But, still the best golf game to date.

I hope that there will be a change in how EA views and responds to they actual customers, you know, the buyers of their games.  There has been a history of putting aside customer requests and even complains about titles in the past, sometimes online servers for EA titles were simply shut down without warning and the title abandoned without properly informing users (customers).

Working together with the public builds relationships, these relationships build company character and leads to a bond that will usually last a lifetime and in fact build more relationships in time.

I would like to see a change, it would be good to see replies here from those within the EA castle, actually pretending to hear what the gaming community has to say.  You made just over 3 billion dollars last year selling games, i think you can afford an intern or two to spend some time a few times a week disceminating the input your customers (those who purhcase your product and ultimately determine your long term success) have about your product.

What brianlevine said above is legitamate, 2009 was rushed out in my opinion, unpolished. By word of mouth (you know, that relationship thing i spoke of above) i heard that there are improvements to the game and i may give it another shot. TW 2009 for the Wii i played twice, thats how bad it was, i spent hours trying to get it to work right, it never did.

Remember the Yugo?  It was a tiny car built in the 80's by the Checks, if you tried to do 60mph in it the engine would blow. Did great on gas but had bugs, the company soon folded because they didnt properly test their product, the end result was substandard.  I'm not saying EA will fail, what i have seen and heard over the years are many in the community vow to never again buy your products due to such failures in communication and poor quality in various products you produce.

In time I hope this helps those in the proper positions find reason for change.

1st of all I agree with Wolfmots, You guys need to stop pumping out games just because it's another year and we need a new game. You guys maybe should do every other year to spend time making an awesome game instead of rushing them out.

RLB47 You have to link your 2nd controller to your Wii.

K now my turn... 2010 for the wii with the motion plus is awesome, I love it, Everything that you said is good... but there are many CONS you guys seem to have ignored for some reason. I love making characters, I like making my friends look like my friends and sometimes I just like making crazy looking people (In rockband I make Kratos and the Crow and scary clowns) but in this new tiger woods 2010 the creating a character seems just as bad as it was in 2003...

The hairstyles suck. The faces are pretty good I guess, good enough. But I don't think the little curves on someone's face really make them stand out. There's like 20 different things you can edit on the faces to make them realistic, yet there's only 1 bar for hair that really doesn't lengthen or shorten the hair much at all. Take out the 20 different facial editing bars, and add some new hairstyles, cuz they haven't changed in 10 years. (I really got pissed making my gf, cuz she has long hair and the longest woman hair in the game doesn't even go past the shoulders, I think it would be the SHT if you guys could do nice sexy long flowy hair for girls, and hair that doesn't look like clay on guys)

The clothes suck for normal people.  I know alot of real golfers buy this game and you have alot of real golfer clothes...   But also alot of normal people buy this game and you have like 1 pair of street pants and 1 street shirt. Just add a few more like idk a Medium sized tshirt not tucked in, some shorts that go just past the knees.

And finally, is there a way to do a power shot? My favorite Tiger was 03 on the xbox and I loved hitting a button while swinging to get some extra distance. Is that gone or have I not tried all the buttons? If you guys know how to get that ball pumped red before striking it email me or something at MikeWand@aol.com but make sure you say something like TIGER 2010 COMMENT in the subject or I'll delete it.

Oh yeah I do love Frisbee Golf too so I am really glad that's in here. Tho I hate that my RH sidearm throw only goes half the distance even tho in real like I can get it to go about 420 feet.
