Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 10: NEW Tournament Challenge

Posted On: Apr. 22, 2009 7:21 PM EST By: TibMikeD 25 Comments

After weeks of speculation and chatter on the forums about this new mode and what it might entail, we're excited to finally talk about our new Tournament Challenge feature.  You've all been waiting patiently, so let's get right to it...

What it's all About

Tournament Challenge is a new game mode that places you directly in some of recent golf history's most memorable scenarios.  It'll be up to you and your created golfer to take on each of these challenges to relive or rewrite history.  Each of the courses in Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 10 is represented in this new mode and each course includes a series of challenge scenarios you must beat.  Within each course there will be a number of pro golfers waiting to challenge you with one of their best real life tournament moments.  Each of these moments has been hand-picked and turned into a challenge to test your skills in a number of different golf situations.

A lot of the challenges found in Tournament Challenge will allow you to play against the real life shots that these pros made while they were in the scenarios we've recreated.  Here's an example of one of these challenges.  At the 2001 THE PLAYERS Championship at TPC Sawgrass, Tiger Woods sank an unbelievable putt on the signature par three 17th.  This putt has become one of the most recognizable and legendary putts in Tiger's career.

In Tournament Challenge, you'll be challenged to not only make the same putt Tiger made, but to do it shot for shot against him.  So in this challenge you'll see Tiger's in-game character execute the same shots he made on this day, at this tournament and on this exact hole and you'll have to match them.

We went through hours and hours of footage and data to recreate the shots that the pro's make in our Tournament Challenge scenarios.  Our goal here was to place you alongside these golfers as they made some of the best shots and scored some of the best rounds of their careers.  So, these challenges are going to put you up against the licensed pro golfer's in our game and allow you to compete directly against the shots, as they made them in real life, within that tournament scenario.  In some of these scenarios you may have to follow a golfer shot for shot.  In others you may have to beat his front 9 score or the number of FIR's they hit...or both!

There's a multitude of challenge scenarios and win criteria to challenge your game throughout this mode.  However, the one consistent theme is that all of the challenges in Tournament Challenge are based on real life events from actual historic golf tournaments.

More Tiger than Ever Before

While our licensed golfers play a huge role in Tournament Challenge, the star of this feature is Tiger himself.  In years past we've had a feature called Tiger Challenge in which Tiger only appeared at the very end.  This year we wanted to make sure he was a central figure in this new mode, so we got him personally involved.

If we were going to have players competing against some of Tiger's greatest tournament moments, then we wanted to bring some exclusive content to each of Tiger's individual challenges.  So earlier in the development cycle Tiger came out to Tiburon for a video shoot to relive, on camera, each of the Tournament Challenge situations we had selected for him.  This was a once in a lifetime experience that all of you will soon be able to enjoy in Tournament Challenge.  We asked Tiger to give us his personal insight into each and every one of his 18 individual challenges.

What surfaces in these videos is a master at his craft.  Tiger details out for all of you, what he was thinking, feeling, his strategies, and his approach to the game in each of these moments we picked from his career highlights.  So each time you go in and take on one of Tiger's scenarios, you'll have the opportunity to watch these videos and get a firsthand account from the man himself to help set up the challenge you are about to play.

Character Progression

Tournament Challenge is located within the My Career section of Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 10 which means you'll use your created career golfer within this mode.  It also means that you'll be able to affect your created golfer's attributes, unlock courses, earn career money and also earn pro shop unlocks as you progress through the challenges.

We're really proud of this new feature and are extremely excited for all of you to try it out in Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 10!  Please feel free to carry on the discussion in the comments section below or on the forums.  This is a huge feature with many details and it's difficult to sum it all up in a single blog post.  I'd be glad to chime in here or in the forums to answer questions or discuss comments you may have regarding this new mode.

if so, will there still be the old tiger challenge?

    i loved that

  • SuperD123 said April 23, 2009

    This sounds absolutely awesome MikeD!!

No more Bingo bango Bongo and One ball Wooo!!

  • TibMikeD said April 23, 2009

This mode WILL also be included on the Wii.  Tournament Challenge will replace the old Tiger Challenge mode within the My Career section of the game.

  • JBHuskers said April 23, 2009

I'm definitely excited to dig into this mode in a couple months!

  • Dewiel said April 23, 2009

    Thanks for the update Mike!

  • PIMitch23 said April 23, 2009

Can you say or unveil anything about the courses in this year's game?

  • mvandek said April 23, 2009

I'm ambivalent about this feature, but I do hope that I don't have to play too many 18-hole rounds to get through the challenges. I hated having to watch a character take his shot through 18-holes, and then possibly lose only to repeat the challenge again. Frustrating. I hope 9-holes is the max and that most of the challenges are about 3 holes worth.

Better yet, have an option to watch the character take his shot or not.

  • TibMikeD said April 23, 2009

    mvandek,

There are not many 18 hole challenges.  Most are relatively quick hitting. Some 4, 5 and 9 hole challenges.  The grand finale is an 18 hole challenge.

This year we also added the ability to skip an AI golfers shot once they have struck the ball.

  • mvandek said April 23, 2009

Wonderful about having smaller challenges and adding the skip feature.

I *am* happy to see that Tiger will be my challenger more often than the last and final challenge. It's a great point that we play in TW09 all these other players often and never see Tiger in the game until the last challenge.

  • Polish Hill said April 23, 2009

I think I'll prefer this to Tiger Challenge but will have to wait and see to be certain.  Thanks for adding a skip feature though it could become extremely useful on higher difficulties.

  • DlhardUNCFAN said April 23, 2009

Thanks Mike D for really going out of your way to let us know the new features for TW 10.  With everything looking so promising for TW 10, I may now be able to get some of the league members off COD4. LOL

Jeez, i still can't get over the fact how much you guys are listening to the community this year, unreal!!

    Outstanding Mike!

  • Oblong said April 23, 2009

As a golf fan, this is a really cool feature to be able to replay history.  This really opens up some marketing opportunities for EA to have a prescence at golf tournaments where the fans can see what you've done (lmk if you need any volunteers :) ).

One thing I must say, that screenshot of Sawgrass #17 took me back.  By far the best I've seen it look in the series and really captures that tournament feel with all the crowd, the tents, and improved graphics.  Awesome!

  • econoodle said April 23, 2009

    thanks Mike.

I did notice in the wii version it says 0-48 complete for the tourney challenge mode.

    means less on the wii?

    it also mentioned 16 courses.

on the ea site it says 27 courses.

is it just that in challenge mode only 16 will appear?

    thanks in advance

  • SuperD123 said April 24, 2009

    tommyfusco,

The confusion what you are getting is that the PS3/360 will have 16 courses.

The Wii version will have 27 courses.

Looking good Mike! Keep up the hard work and commmunications with the community!

  • SSenator said April 24, 2009

Great article Mike. This should the speculation on the forums regarding this feature. From the looks of it this should make the Challenge mode a bit more exciting.

  • JCauthen04 said April 24, 2009

Tournament Challenge is a far more desirable means of character building.  I can already say that I'll prefer it to Tiger Challenges!

  • BDUBYAS said April 27, 2009

i HAVE A QUESTION ? IS IT TRUE THAT WE ARE ONLY GETTING ONE TRY AT THE ONLINE DAILY TOURNAMENT INSTEAD OF UNLIMITED TRYS LIKE THE PREVIOUS VERSIONS?

  • EAcom Golf Tim said April 28, 2009

Haven't heard anything for sure, but I hope this is the case. Limiting to one try bring more legitimacy to the scoring.

  • BDUBYAS said April 28, 2009

or maybe four round total score like real pga tourneys.  I could play four rounds in an hour or so.  one chance at four rounds. different settings for every round (pins,greenspeed/hardness,wind,weather,rough length gets longer over the course of the 4 rounds... that would be money.  these ideas shouldn't be free.

  • daniel1972au said June 29, 2009

can you play more than 1 golfer in career mode ? i hope so cos it gets really boring just playing 1 player

i think there should be more courses in next series eg. euro open australiasan etc that would make an awesome game

  • themightygooners said July 16, 2009

    this game is poor

  • gerrard6 said July 28, 2009
