We hope you enjoyed Mike DeVault's Live Tournaments blog for Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 10. Now that you've had a chance to learn a little bit about LiveTournaments, take a look at a video walkthrough of the feature.
Mike,
Thanks for making and posting this video. This really helps out. The Tiger Woods team for this year has done a excellent job with listening to the gamers this year. Keep up the good work. One thing I really hope you guys will change is the SUBMIT LIMIT to only once for most of the tournaments.
Di
Nice comment at the end that you will tweak Play the Pros so that people aren't getting -30 for the whole tournament.
You asked for feedback. I know that many from the TW forums would love to have a weekly tournament with Play-the-Pro settings so that a good score is also realistic. If Tour Pro Weekly are not already that (I hope they are), please add this to the weekly (and dailies). That would be a wonderful add.
Mike --
You asked for feedback and said that you're listening. I hope that's really the case. In that spirit:
It really is imperative that there be a tournament mode whereby ONE ATTEMPT can be made by all players to post their best score. Until this happens, you are not making a golf sim. Do you play golf? I'm assuming of course you're probably an avid player. Here's something that happens every week: you hit your first drive OB. Second one is piped. Or you just miss a birdie putt. You hole out and roll it again, and of course it goes in. You look at your playing partners and go: Anyone can make the second one. That's just how it works. That pressure to perform is part of the game to the point you can't parse it away, or you're not playing golf. Unless of course you're the type that rolls the ball over in the fairway all the time to give yourself a better lie...
Well, in essence, that's what you're doing. How good would Tiger Woods be if he could post whichever round he chose in a given tournament? The question is irrelevant. What makes Tiger great is that he does it the first time. A videogame bearing his name should have a mode that requires the same.
Notice that I only say 'a mode'. Leave all the crazy stuff in for people who enjoy it. I hate arcade golf, but others love it. Fine. I'm not suggesting you take anything away from them. What I am asking is that you give us a mode that separates the very best, where every shot counts and not only when we choose it to. And understand, this is IMPOSSIBLE to do if you let people make multiple attempts at a given round. It defeats the very spirit of the game.
Please, please, please provide the hardcore with a mode that suits them. A golf mode for the true golf purist. And again, you can't say that you're doing that with multiple rounds. Then again, a hundred and fifty yard pitching wedges don't fit into that sport, either. Maybe you should take a hard look at that disconnect. You are robbing the game -- and the players who perform it so well -- of what makes their games special. Any created player can drive like Bubba Watson, have the irons of O'Hair, the short game of Phil and the ability to get it in the hole like Tiger -- AT THE SAME TIME. That's sad.
Long story short, we need a mode where every shot counts. Daily/Weekly etc. One for the hardcore, the same way that you cater to beginners. Where a 300 yard drive brings something and means risk, where par matters and isn't a bad score, and where the elite know that their performance is not defined by how many goes they gave a given round.
Mike, what concerns me is that you are already aware of this issue -- you've said so yourself, that it's "touchy" -- and with your next breath you try to explain it away. The best will still be the best, no matter how many tries they make at a round, you say. This is simply not true, and I suspect deep down that you know it. Time will be a factor, and it shouldn't be. Everyone should have a mode -- ONE MODE IS ALL THAT IS BEING ASKED -- where the playing field is leveled. You know that you're working with the same stat cap, however you choose to distribute them, and your first ball is either better or worse than everyone else's on its own merits.
Can you imagine a post round interview at The Players this week: "Tiger, what did you hit there on 17?" Tiger: "Well, I hit wedge the first time, but it wasn't quite enough to get back to the pin. Second time through I hit it harder, got it back there but with too much spin and it yanked back. Third time, I realized that I just needed to hit a dead arms nine and put it in there to three feet." "That's awesome." Tiger: "Yeah. But I missed the first two. Tricky little putt. Took me three tries but at least I got my birdie."
Seriously Mike, think about it. If the game doesn't ship with this, you will have set a poor standard and it will be hard for people to adjust. If it does, you'll be amazed at how much you sell in subsequent years as real golfers come back into the mix. Because to most real golfers, the game is a joke, sadly. If Rory McIlroy flat out saying it didn't wake you up to that, perhaps nothing will.
You say you're listening, Mike, but you're already spinning why you're really not. Hoping against hope that I'm wrong.
Please bring the SIM element back. Please. All other EA titles at least attempt it, and Madden is finally making great strides. This game should be The Show of golf, not another Golden Tee.
Thanks for communicating with people and taking the time to read.
I love what you have to say GAFF.
I would love to see a SIM game mode where actual strategy is involved and a round in the mid to low 60s is an achievement (Even par on a U.S. Open set up). People would have to know how to really play golf. You would have to miss in the correct spots and even know when to lay up. Shooting in the 40s and 320 yard 2 irons are really sad for people like me who have played golf all their lives. Just a game mode is all we ask. That way people can still choose what they want to do.
I am very optimistic with where Madden 10 is going with this and I hope Tiger Woods 10 can follow the same path.
Hi, newbie to the board.
Two things I'd like to see in TW10 to make things more realistic:
#1) No more 'adding spin' to the ball after you hit it. If you want spin to the ball, you should make adjustments before the swing. I think that'll level out the scores a bit.
#2) I had this problem in TW07 for the 360 -- I start in a tournament at the beginning of my career and I shoot a 90 or so. I'm 20 strokes behind the leader. The next round... every other player in the tournaments shoots a 90. This shouldn't happen...
(and here's a TW10 wishlist)
#1) create-a-course -- you could have EA establish a website like they're doing for NCAA 10 create-a-school, users can build their own course on that site and then download it via xbox live into the game.
#2) career mode where you have to qualify for the PGA Tour, starting out in / right before Q School... if this is already in the game, that's awesome.
wcrickards,
1) There is Tour Pro Mode where you don't get spin after the ball.
2) The AI has been changed this year so they hit more realistic scores
3) They're gonna have it on the PC version i think
4) They dont have it unfortunately this year....
Where can we find our personal results from the day before, on-line...EAsprtsworld.com?
In 09 we could see $'s added to our on-line money from Lobby play.
How can we see how well or poor we did in the tournaments? I played in a few tournys and i saw that i made some money, but dont know where i ended up ranking...please advise.
