Season Showdown: Show your skills

Posted On: May. 21, 2009 10:53 AM EST By: raczilla 37 Comments

Last week we focused on the structure of Season Showdown and touched on a few of the ways you can earn Extra Credits. This week we will focus on one of the three main pillars of Extra Credits that center around gameplay, which is the Skills category.

Simply put, Skills credits are earned by showing off your skills on the sticks. Your ability to perform these skill moves will earn you and your school extra credits. You can’t rely on the CPU to perform these actions to get the credits, you must be the one that got the interception or forced the fumble if you want the extra credit. So if you are using the new Defensive Assist feature, which puts the player you have highlighted under CPU control as long as you are holding the A/X button down, you can let the CPU guide your player to where they need to be, but to earn the credit you will need to take back control of the player and make the play. As you will see in a moment, a majority of the Skills events are defensive based, so if defense isn’t your strong suit, Defensive Assist will be a great way to put you in a position to make plays and earn credits.

Defensive Assist isn’t the only new gameplay feature that will help you earn Skill credits. Player Lock is a new addition that allows you to lock your control to one player for a play. This is your chance to basically pick and choose when you want to have a Campus Legend like experience during a normal game. Since you don’t have the ability to switch the player you are controlling after the snap, your ability to make the play while locked on one player will earn you a Player Lock bonus.

Here is the complete list of events that will earn you Skill credits:

User Tackle for Loss – Getting into the backfield and disrupting the other team’s running game is a key way into forcing your opponent to run a one dimensional offense. Time your defensive move with the right analog stick to get past the offensive lineman and wrap the ball carrier up to earn some Skill credits. With the addition of branchable tackles the ball carrier will have the ability to break free from a tackle by performing a move even after the defender has wrapped him up. You can also stop a ball carrier’s momentum and have another defender help complete the tackle.

User Big Hit – it’s pretty difficult for a ball carrier to spin out of a tackle when you’ve planted them into the turf. By this point everyone knows what Big Hits are all about and how effective they can be. They can even lead to the next Skill category.

User Forced Fumble – Knock the defender silly and try to get him to give up the rock. One thing to remember with Skills credits is that you can get multiple events on the same play. So if you Big Hit a running back in the backfield for force a fumble you will get credits for all three events.

User Sack –Since we have added the ability for QB’s to release the ball after a sack animation has started this one is going to be a little tougher than in years past. Previously the QB would always tuck the ball once a sack started, but before you cry foul and think that you are going to see a QB fire a laser while getting blindsided by a linebacker, you will see the ball is definitely affected by the impact of the defender, which could lead to a big turnover by the defense if you launch a duck. Disrupting the offense like this could lead to the next Skills event:

User Pick – Ah User Pick, the one that started it all. Longtime fans of the series will remember User Pick as the first “User” event to get called out in an NCAA game, helping to end the age old replay debate to determine if you actually made the play, or let the CPU make the pick. Some new updates to the WR/DB interactions will go a long way into determining the positioning the defensive back will have when they go to make a play. The updates to press/release at the line will allow a defender to jam the receiver and throw him off of his route. If the WR gets the upper hand, watch out, unless you have closing speed or safety help the WR will be in the clear. But it’s not just the play at the line, animations have been added while the routes are being run so you will see WR’s and DB’s jostling for position throughout the play. If your DB is able to take advantage of an opening and get positioning they will be in great shape to either go for a swat or pick the ball off.

User Swat – While it may not have the same chance to break the back of your opponent as an interception, a well timed swat can be another nail in your opponent’s coffin. There have been some additions to swats this year, in addition to the sellout animations where it’s all or nothing defenders will now attempt to wrap a receiver up and knock the ball out of the opponent’s hands before he is able to secure the catch. There are also new “knockout” animations where the defender will drill the receiver and knock the ball out of his hands before he is able to come down with it. Finally, the defensive linemen are getting into the action as well. QB’s will need to pay attention to their passing lanes if they don’t want to find their pass getting swatted down by the big paw of a defensive tackle. The defenders won’t always just knock the pass down; if they only get a piece of it they will wind up tipping the pass which could lead to a big turnover. Performing any of these actions will help your defenses cause and earn you some Skills credits.

User Catch – I’ve already talked about the new WR/DB interactions, but one other addition that will be a great addition for the passing game is catch steering. If you catch the ball near the sidelines the catch animations will try to turn you up field instead of forcing you out of bounds. You will also see some great new catch animations including new over the shoulder catches, so when you get past the pressing DB, and there’s no safety support as you are streaking down the sideline you won’t have to break stride to haul in the pass. Weather will affect your route running; wet conditions may cause your receiver to slip while making cuts, which could hurt your changes to make a user catch until you recover.

User Passing TD – In the User Sack section I talked about what happens when you attempt to pass the ball while getting hit, and in the User Swat section I talked about defensive linemen getting their hands up and forcing you to recognize your passing lanes, but another key improvement that will affect the passing game is the addition of offensive linemen steering defenders. This allows the tackles to fan the defensive ends out and create a true pocket. If you are a guy that scrambles as soon as the ball is snapped, you are going to find yourself scrambling right into a defensive end that has been pushed out wide. With all of these additions, before the ball has even left your hand you have to read the defense, keep an eye on the pass rush and step up in the pocket, identify your receiver, find your passing lane, and get the ball off before a defender gets a hand on you. If you are able to do all of that and convert for a touchdown, you deserve some Skill credits.

As I mentioned earlier, most of the skills are defense based. This was done intentionally as a lot of the offensive actions are based on the ratings of the players on the field instead of the skill of the person holding the controller. We wanted the skill credits to reflect your game skills, which are on display the most when on defense.

Just like every other credit category, we will track the number of Skill credits each person has earned, and display the player’s ability in each category through a leveling system. When you are looking to play a random opponent online you will be able to view their Season Showdown ID card, here you will be able to see who they represent, their total credits earned, and their levels for Skills, Strategy, and Sportsmanship. This gives you a snapshot of what type of player your opponent is, so if you see a high Skill level, you will know your opponent is well versed at the art of the “user” actions.

Sorry for the delay in the blog and video this week.  We ran into some technical issues with the video.  You can watch it below and we'll have a hi-res version on the NCAA Football 10 product site soon.

I love the player lock feature. My only question about it - Will I be able to use it in online dynasty? I hope so, as this is my favorite feature in the game.

The skills stuff is cool, but I'm still cold on the Season Showdown. When I play NCAA, I like to start my dynasty as a low quality team (last year it was Syracuse) and build them up before trying to move on to a better job at a bigger school. I don't really play with my favorite team, so I don't see ever using this mode.

As far as the blog, I'd love to see more on the dynasty additions and fixes. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for coaches and coach contracts in online dynasty. It's one of the things that makes your team your team.

  • da_ThRONe said May 22, 2009

You guys still just dont get it. How is it Madden new features are gameplay related and NCAA new features are kiddie stuff like this. Are the people who buy videogames really that far out of touch with real football they rather gain points then have a mimics real football.

I like the player lock but once again not to beat a dead horse it was in last-gen games. For a group of devs. to say that time is a factor and then continue to add fluff like this just show there is a complete breakdown in time management. To add team builder(which I understand was in popular demand) or season showdown or the dreaded windsocks and not have improved the running animation to me is just a dumb move and shows some serious issues in NCAA priorities! Not that I would ever hate or pray for another person to lose there job ,but its been made painfully clear this group has no idea what it is there consumers want and I dont think this game will ever be up to par with this group.

I like this player lock thing and I think it will make the game very cool..

As far as Season Showdown ..I look at ti this way , I wear my teams logos on my shirt and everyone knows who I am a fan of

Just as I will not always play online with my team but everyone will now who I root for..now that is kool.

Thanks EA Can't wait for NCAA and MADDEN 10..

  • irishfan22 said May 22, 2009

will you be able to move teams from one conference to another in Dynasty mode that isn't the online version?I hope so I think that would be a great new feature, player lock looks pretty sweet as well. I am a big Irish fan,I was hoping the Irish would not be able to recruit JC players since the university doesn't allow them too.

  • MegaBearsFan said May 22, 2009

Hrmm, I hope all these branchable animations like lineman tipping the ball and QBs throwing ducks whenever they get hit don't end up causing the game to have a ridiculous amount of turnovers like '08 did.

How come there are no running back-related skill credits?  I don't see any credits being earned for user jukes or stiff arms or breaking tackles.  Or what about running an option play?  The option is one of the hardest plays in all of football to execute correctly (which is why you rarely see it in the NFL), and successfully converting an option run for a big play should earn you credits.  Especially if you have a perfectly-timed pitch.

There is also no special teams skill credits.  Why not be able to earn some credits for punting a ball out of bounds inside the 10 yard line?  Or converting a 40 + yard field goal?  Or for a successful onside kick when you need one (which could earn you skill points, but hurt your sportsmanship if you're onside kicking when you don't have to)?  Or returning a punt/kick for a touchdown?

Its nice to see so much attention being paid to defensive performance this year (I've been waiting for some good defensive enhancement for a while), but its kind of bothersome to see other aspects of the game apparently being completely ignored by this Showdown feature.

Also, I wonder if celebrating after a touchdown or show-boating your way into the end-zone will hurt your sportsmanship?  Personally, I think EA should put back in the personal foul penalty for doing those things.

OMG, the vid is a part 1 of 3 more season showdown vids. Why are guys trying to stuff this feature down our throat? If its not you but the bosses wink in one of the OS threads.lol We're 7 weeks away from release and still no dynasty,CL or anything else for that matter info. Besides,Pepsi is better than coke.

  • MAXIMUS205 said May 22, 2009

Why is Jacory Harris #12 for miami white?

  • cdj said May 22, 2009

@Jazz Trance: Once you pick your favorite school in Season Showdown, they will get the credits no matter who you play with.

For example, you can set Ohio State as the school you are representing in Season Showdown and they will get every credit you earn, even if you play a Dynasty as Syracuse and never use OSU all year.

  • MegaBearsFan said May 22, 2009

The camera looks like its been reworked (at least for when the player lock is enabled).  I hope some of that camera panning also occurs while playing as the QB so we can see more of the field.  I remember one of the PS2 games did that, but it only happened when you scrambled one way of the other.

It would be nice if whenever you are on the right hash, the camera will pan slightly to the left, so you can see all your receivers on that side or vice versa for when you're on the left side.  Alternatively, it might be cool if the camera pans slightly in the direction of the QB's throwing arm.  So if you are a right-handed QB, the camera will start out panned slightly to the right, making all the receivers on the right easier to see, but obscuring the guys on the left unless the QB scrambles, in which case, it should pan in the direction he's scrambling.

@cdj: oh yeah, I totally forgot about that blog.  Thanks for the reminder! :)

Although did that mention anything about whether the QB is right or left-handed and if that affects the camera angle.  I think it should.  But that might just be me.

  • NotHenry Porter said May 22, 2009

Another week, another disappointing blog post.  The feedback on the internet is decidedly negative on the Season Showdown fluff, why feature it for another week?  You're just putting up a new spin on the same old gameplay from what I've seen.  The player lock is nice but we've seen it before, it's not novel as your two employees here try and sell it.  I'm starting to lose hope on this turning out well, hopefully next week's blog does something, anything to make me excited about the game from a gameplay point of view.

  • gatorfanatic said May 22, 2009

    @NotHenry Porter

They have made dramatic changes to the gameplay with the new WR/DB interactions, the layered blend that lets the QB still throw the ball before or after he gets hit....The OL/DL interactions look like there being worked on but I dont know yet fully....

I like the new stripping the ball animation it looks good and the player lock looks amazing....Now why can't they talk about the gameplay features I dont know maybe because they think this other stuff will excite us or something who knows

  • MegaBearsFan said May 22, 2009

Well, talking about this other stuff also helps them to put the new gameplay features in context, since this new showdown thing seems to be heavily geared towards showcasing some of the game's new features.

Still, the Season Showdown thing looks less than impressive, especially considering that you won't be getting the whole feature if you don't buy the game within the first few weeks, since you'll already have missed a segment of the real NCAA schedule.  And the Season Showdown apparently has absolutely NO replayability since I doubt they will support the NCAA 10 Season Showdown when next year's season comes around.

  • WILLIAMF 30 said May 22, 2009

I think i speak for most of us when i say... No One cares about SS, we want info on dynasty, online dynasty, TEAM BUILDER, and pretty much anything else in the game..

    LISTEN TO THE PEOPLE!!!!

  • j2k9 said May 22, 2009

Let me just say that I've always loved NCAA Football.  I've been playing it since Bill Walsh on the Sega Genesis.  That said, you guys really don't have your priorities in order.  You guys are adding all these gimicky fluffy features this year before addressing core issues?  Where are the refs?  Where are the chaingangs?  Where are the coaches on the sidelines?  Why do the players on the sidelines look like they belong on the Nintendo 64?  Why haven't you addressed the running animations?  Why aren't you utilizing the ESPN liscence to the fullest?  What are you doing to improve presentation?  Why in the world would you take PROGRESSIVE LIGHTING out of the game?  I mean the features you guys are adding are cool but you should build your foundation 1st before adding the fluff.  Sad to say but this might be the 1st year that I don't buy NCAA Football.  After seeing what Madden is doing this year I can't justify paying $65 for NCAA 10 or should I say NCAA 09.5.  Please listen to your diehard fans EA!

  • pharaoh_00 said May 23, 2009

Ben have you ever played a sport in your life? I watched some videos with you on them, you look like you haven't ran more than three feet before. Don't make FSU so good this year, they are garbage. I finally see why you guys can't make a good football game your a group of fat computer geeks. You think building a fake team (like FSU in last years game) is the best thing about college football. The ability to make the Yankees or your high school team and put them in the game is the best thing about college football! College football is first about pageantry, Saturday afternoon, you need to capture that before anything else, second its about the school and players,, the jerseys, their style, the equipment. Third coaches they should be in the game, watch a college football game, 3 seconds don't pass without something about the coach. And fourth the fans, the crowds in NCAA 09 do not pay respect to the real life fans of college football. Until you get this down don't add create-a-school. In college football teams dominate year after year, USC, Florida, Texas, not just because the get good athletes but because they have good schemes. Thats my create-a-playbook would be so much better than CAS. Creating a defensive scheme that no one can score on, or an offense that is unstopable will keep people playing, it will make the game grow. All you have to do is watch a college football game take everything you can possibly take from it and put it into your game.

  • QUiiCkN3zZ said May 23, 2009

Yo dont get me wrong EA i like the new post and the cool new video but u guys have been talking about season showdown for weeks now can we get to a new topic, like getting deeper into dynasty/online dynasty, campus legend, or give us some new features to the game or something else because season showdown has been the topic for the last 3 weeks now and its starting to bore me.

  • ANTARCTICM0NKEY said May 23, 2009

    introduce it to region 2!!!!!

  • NotHenry Porter said May 23, 2009

@ gatorfanatic, those seem like patches for broken stuff last year which do improve the gameplay but still aren't enough for me at least.

There are no formation subs in this game, no in-game saves, commentary appears to be the same as it has been for years, all in all, pretty disappointing in my eyes.

I'm glad that they put in the teambuilder portion for those who have longed for the create-a-school but I'm just gonna use my alma mater.  This season showdown is complete fluff and was obviously what they focused on.  Marketing has triumphed over actually gameplay again for the NCAA crew.

  • BenSchoolYard said May 23, 2009

They really need to give up the SS.

  • NatureBoy2323 said May 23, 2009

I'm looking forward to the Season Showdown Mode. Come on Gamecock fans, let's get behind South Carolina and make them #1 this year.

  • j2k9 said May 23, 2009

Seriously you guys say that you want to capture the feel of College Football but you don't even have coaches on the sidelines?  Coaches are a HUGE I repeat HUGE part of College Football.  Why in the world aren't coaches on the sidelines.  You guys added cheerleaders before adding coaches?  Really EA?  Not to mention refs & chaingangs.  Please get your priorities in order EA!

  • marcokhalil@aol.com said May 23, 2009

    EA you're ridiculous.

All of these new cute little features but little tuned gameplay.

No one cares if one school has more video-gaming fans than the other. It means NOTHING. No one is going to buy a game for a feature like this anyway. And why reward people for not taking advantage of the game when you could just make it hard TO take advantage of the game.

In those videos it looks like the player is moving in 8 directions, not in a full circle. Guess I'll need to wait until NCAA 11 to get what Madden 10 is offering.

Other than pro-tak madden is offering no new features (as of may 23rd). And you know what? I CAN'T WAIT for Madden. Keep adding new gimicky features please!!! And by the way, EA - You got OWNED in Ben's recent interview with OS. All I read was "no not this year. same as last year." aside from that he dodged around answering some questions and misunderstood others. smoooth job EA.

  • da_ThRONe said May 23, 2009

  • QUiiCkN3zZ said May 24, 2009

Can they please stop talking about season showdown like seriously, we the fans been hearing about this topic for the last 3 weeks now give us something fresh already

  • da_ThRONe said May 24, 2009

Only reason I can think of for fluff like this is them wanting to appeal to casual gamers. What they fail to realize is casual gamers want to see things that happen in real life in the game(This is why MLB the Show is so good). Whats in a real televisied game you ask? Refes, coaches, better commentary, chaingangs, hair coming out of the helmets, realistic running, sidelines with real players, hand towels(and all other accessories), more facemask, team entrances(which might have made it this year but they keep talking about season showdown) ,fans reactions to big plays and more realistic injuries just to name some of the top of my head. And that are just the things we see on t.v.. On a side note why no knee braces every O-line where them reguardless now but "If it in the game Its in Madden not NCAA" this is clearly EA now motto!

  • waltparke said May 25, 2009

Guys.  Can we please do something to change up the ACTUAL GAMEPLAY???  Stop screwing around with all of superfluous stuff.  Let's run the Wildcat effectively.  Stop online players from being able to run 4 plays throughout the game. (or if you're going to keep letting that happen, then please give the stupid computer controlled defender on our teams some better AI).

If you would like to keep adding things around the corner, do something cool.  Like let us add onto our stadiums, build a new weight room, or build a new academic center so our players learn things quicker.  Something a little bit outside of the box.

  • irishfan22 said May 25, 2009

I really like the help the defense is going to get this year in the game,I really liked the part in the video when the FSU players sacked the QB and the ball popped in the air and a DL caught the ball. Ben can you change teams from different conferences in the Dynasty mode without playing online? Ben add me as a friend if you would..you guys do a great job...

  • DRPLJ23 said May 26, 2009

All of these features are nice, but I want to see some of the madden features such as the pro-tak system and the slower game speed. Those madden features make the game more realistic, i understand that it is less likely for a college running back to pull multiple defenders, but 4 or 5 happens every once in a while. I really like NCAA and i have favored it over Madden for the past 2 years, but if the features in Madden are legitement and they do not show in NCAA at all, you may have lost a customer, because the quality of the game beats out the quantity of features, please read my post, your game will sell more and be more respected.

  • DRPLJ23 said May 26, 2009

Im watching the video and it seems like the block animations are the same and it seams like it is hard to get a sack. Please use the ones from madden. i dont care if it feels like the same product, the difference should be between college teams and nfl teams itself.

So far we have covered the Skills and Strategy elements of Season Showdown . This week we will focus
