NCAA Football 10: Season Showdown Strategy

Posted On: May. 28, 2009 5:17 PM EST By: raczilla 45 Comments

It used to be that you could sit back, call the same play over and over again, and just “out athlete” your opponent. It used to be that you could hop around the playbook jumping from I Form, to Ace, to Shotgun without a care in the world for creating an offensive identity. And it used to be that you could know exactly what your opponent was going to know, know exactly how you would stop it, but didn’t have a way to tell your players that that without a doubt the next play is going to be a run to the right, go shut it down.

Thankfully those days are behind us. With NCAA Football 10 strategy takes on a huge role with three new gameplay features that put the emphasis on out thinking your opponent instead of just out maneuvering him on the sticks. By gameplanning, setting up plays, and keying in on what you think the offense will be running you can affect the outcome of the game just based on your coaching decisions.

And you are going to need to strategize your opponent like never before. With the inclusion of Adaptive AI CPU controlled defenses will learn what you are doing, and focus on shutting it down. Rush up the middle for a few big gains? Good Job. The next time you come to the line you will see that the defensive tackles have pinched in to take away the running lanes. Found that route you love to run if you need to pick up a first down? Be careful, you run that route too much the defense will be looking for it and blanket your receiver. Even if you try and get sneaky by calling the same route from a different formation, the CPU will be watching for that route, not the play, and shutting you down.

It’s not all about defensive upgrades for the CPU either. While on defense the CPU is going to test you deep to try and open things up. If you are the type of guy that likes to press all of the time, you’re now going to be the type of guy that also likes to chase a receiver down after they got past your DB and got hit wide open on a streak.

Gameplanning

The first feature we will talk about is Gameplanning. This feature is all about determining how aggressive, conservative, or balanced you want your team to play during certain situations.  There are six defensive situations and five offensive situations you can adjust at any point during the game, based on your preferred strategy for that moment.

The Gameplanning screen comes up automatically after the coin toss, and at the start of the 2nd half, as well as after any timeout. You can also manually bring up the screen any time you are in the playcall screen (pressing LT/L2). From here you will be able to adjust your gameplan as you wish. While you may want to play more aggressive at the start of the game, if you are protecting a lead you will most likely want to ease off the throttle a bit and play more conservatively.

Each gameplan option has its own risks and rewards. For example, if you want your defense to always attempt to strip the ball, you will see the strip ball animations play on almost every play, and the chance of successfully stripping the ball increases. However, the more the defender is going for the strip, the more likely they are to get a hand up a little too high and grab hold of a facemask. If you don’t mind tacking 15 yards onto a play every now and then in order to force a turnover then you can set your strip ball gamplan to aggressive. You can also go more of a conservative route and tell your defenders to focus on making the tackle instead of stripping the ball. In this case you will get less facemask penalties, but you will have little chance of ripping the ball out. If you don’t want to play one way or the other you can set this option to “normal” which will allow for the defenders to choose how to play on their own (as they have in previous versions of the game).
All of the options for both offense and defense default to Balanced. You will be able to see what your current setting is by looking at the color checkmark next to the each option. Green means you are set to Balanced, Yellow is Aggressive, and Blue is Conservative. Based on your Gameplanning settings, you will earn Strategy Credits for Season Showdown when your Gameplan settings were successful on the field.

Since the screens do a great job of listing out what the pros/cons of each option are I’ll let the screenshots do the talking for each gameplan event:

Defensive Options (click to enlarge)

 Offensive Options (click to enlarge)

Setup Plays

The next new Strategy feature is the Setup Play. This feature allows you to run one play successfully in order to “setup” a variation of a similar play. The easiest example of this is to run the Power O play to setup the play action pass based on the Power O play (PA Power O). At the playcall screen you will be able to tell which plays set each other by the chain links that connect the two plays. Here’s a screenshot of the Power O example:

While the play action off of a run play is the easiest example, Setup Plays are not limited to just this type of playcalling strategy. There are pass plays linked to other pass plays, where one play may have a “mesh” route where the receiver streaks across the field, the linked version of that play involves the same receiver cutting that mesh route off and instead running a hook route. Another example is how a draw play can be used to setup a HB screen.

You can run either play to setup their linked play, so you can either setup the PA Power O by successfully running Power O, or you can setup Power O by successfully running PA Power O. As you run one play, you will see how close you are to fully setting up its linked play.  Once the linked play is at 100% setup, the defense will be at its highest likelihood of getting faked out, increasing your chances of successfully executing your setup play. The chance that the defender will get faked out is all based on their individual ratings, so a top rated defender will still be less likely to fall for the play action than some walk-on freshman. The Setup Play just means that the defenders have the highest chance of getting faked out when you run that play.

The Setup Play only works once before you need to work on setting it up again, and if you run a play you are setting up before it’s reached the 100% Setup status, you will need to start over again as that play will be reset to 0% Setup.  Here is a screenshot showing a play in the process of getting setup:

There is no time limit on how long a play will be setup for. If you setup a play in the 1st quarter, and never run it again, the play will still be setup and ready to go in the 4th quarter.
The speed at which a play is setup is based both on the success of the play as well as the difficulty level. If you want to get a play to 100% setup on Heisman you will need to do a lot more than a couple of 5 yard gains.
If you are able to run a play that is 100% setup and either get a 1st down or a touchdown you will earn Strategy credits.

Defensive Keys

If you have ever been in a game and you knew, without a doubt, that your opponent will be running to the strong side of the formation, or its 3rd and 1 and you know a run up the middle is coming, or if you know your opponent will be throwing to a specific receiver on the play, but you have never been able to shut the play down based only playcall/defensive shifts alone then Defensive Keys is what you have been waiting for. During preplay while on defense you will be able to bring up the Defensive keys menu by holding LT/L2. You will then be able to choose what you want the defense to key on for that play. Here is a screenshot of what this looks like:

With the right stick you will be able to pick your defensive key for that play. If you choose Run Right, at the snap of the ball you will see your defensive players flood toward the right, and if you guess correctly, the ball carrier will have nowhere to go. Now, if you guess Run Right, and your opponent instead runs a toss to the left, well you’ve just opened yourself up for a potential big gain by the offense. Selecting to play the pass will basically prevent your defenders from getting faked out by a play action play (which is a nice counter if you know your opponent is going to run a setup play action play).

In addition to this you can also choose to spotlight a specific receiver for that play. When you bring up Defensive Keys the camera goes into Coach Cam and each of the offense’s receivers will have a button callout over them. Select the receiver you want to spotlight, and the defense will make that player the focus of their pass coverage to make sure he doesn’t get into any open space. Since you are focusing on one guy the potential is there for another receiver to get into some open space and burn you.

The addition of Defensive Keys adds a new wrinkle to the chess match that is playcalling. If you are too predictable in your playcalling your opponent will be able to pick up on your tendencies and shut you down. Or you can try and out think your opponent by always running on 1st down only to surprise them by calling a deep bomb out of the blue when they are expecting another HB Dive.

You can only choose one key per play. If you select to spotlight a receiver, then select to key on a pass, you will no longer be spotlighting the receiver.

If you don’t want to key in on something, but you do want a quick way to mass shift your defense in a direction you can use the left analog stick towards the direction you want your players to shift. This will not change their assignments, only shift where they line up.

If you key in on a run and stop the play for a loss, or break up a pass play through a sack, swat, knockout, or interception you will earn Strategy credits.

Well, that’s a rundown of the three new gameplay features that make up the Strategy component of Season Showdown.

GREAT additions.  Nice job Ben, Russ, & team.

It's going to be fun setting up plays so I can burn my buddy's defense in the fourth quarter when they bite on the playaction.

  • DontTry2Hard said May 29, 2009

    more season showdown stuff. geez.

i thought we already knew this stuff?

i'm still excited about the game. the additions are cool. however, being from the same company, NCAA will always be compared with Madden. Typically it doesn't match up, but even moreso this year. Madden has raised the bar and NCAA is like a toddler jumping and jumping trying to reach it. Unfortunately, it's nowhere close.

    good blog though.

  • JCash624 said May 29, 2009

season showdown is an awful idea but this strategy stuff will be great assuming you can use it out of season showdown too

  • dorowz said May 29, 2009

NCAA is always a fantastic game.  These additions look pretty cool, but the one that you should be featuring is the return of the chain gang (assuming it's coming back).  Killed me last year when they weren't there.

  • boilerfan1509 said May 29, 2009

    A few comments about this.

Will these be for each individual player?  Because why would (for the option pitch example) want my whole defense to key on the RB and leave the QB open.   Or why be force to choose "go for pick or swat" for the whole defense?  If i have a freshman CB, that I want to just bat the ball down, why should i not let my ball hawking safety go for the picks?   Or my butterfingers LBs go for swats, but let my sticky fingers DBs go for the picks.  Same offensively,  If i have freshman receiver, just catch the ball, but a 2-time all-american, go for the big play.   I think this is a great idea, but i think it should be individualized with an option to make it the whole team.

Will these choices affect ratings (player development)?  Obviously the choices would have to be succesful, but if you have a freshman reciever.....if you choose to just focus on catching the ball, and have success.....his catch rating goes up.  Then when he is a junior/senior you could go for the big play and he would still have good chance to catch the ball because that skill was developed.

The play calling stuff:  Why are there 3 options to stop the run and only 1 to stop the pass?  Shouldnt it be (first part) stop run or pass....then the other options (run left, run mid, run right, pass deep, middle, sidelines, short, screen, option, etc.)?   Also, i know that a lot of defenses may have the d-line focus on preventing a run up the middle, the DBs preventing outside routes, while the LBs are roaming for if run - outside runs, if pass - coving the middle.

Also, if you choose to spotlight a reciever.....shouldnt it mean you are wanting to choose to stop the pass, but focus on that receiver?  It just sounds awful that you can spotlight a single reciever, but whoa whoa whoa about trying to ALSO stop the pass.   Why not allow us to choose what type of play and then ALSO a player to spotlight if we want.  That player could be a reciever (reverses, options, passes), RB for (runs, options, screens), or even a mike vick like qB (draws, scrambles, etc.)

I definately think this is a step in the right direction, but it seems like you guys are reaching trying to push TECMO BOWL technology (I love that game...but nothing compared to today) on us for use in present day games.   I think with a little extra effort, this could have been sweet.   But now it just seems like smoke and mirrors compared to what it seems like madden is doing.

  • boilerfan1509 said May 29, 2009

I honestly belive that NCAA could easliy be compared to Madden, but the developers dont seem to be too gimicky.  I mean come on, what does college football have that the NFL doesnt.......one main thing that it towers over the NFL with.........TRADITION.   You say to create a "dynasty".   THen let us.  Allow us to have record books (give records for each individual stats, not just 4-5 for each position), allow us to customize the home page, present more challenges, allow for upgrades (stadiums, corrdinators, etc.), have it tie into the web to make it easier to edit "articles" that then can be displayed in the game, Let us add videos/pictures to the backgrounds of the game,  Let us create a "shrine", let us access everything from the internet....so when we arent playing the game we would visit your website and be there.  For the love of goodness sake add some pagentry, excitement, more cutscenes and the begining, in-game, end of the fans, student section, tailgating.

I think the possibilities are ENORMOUS to really make NCAA more than just Madden's little brother, and the development team doesnt develop.  They come up with decent (at best) ideas and reaches for acceptance.  Do they not even play the game when they are done?  And they just wait for Madden to come out and cust and paste the college logos (ok, i know that is A LITTLE overboad) but just venting my frustration.  I have been an NCAA buyer every year since 2003 and only one madden in that time.  Sadly this year will be madden and i might end the NCAA streak.  It is just too disappointing (dont even get me started with things that were in old-gens and have yet to make it into new-gens.......formation subs)

  • Jazz Trance said May 29, 2009

These new strategy additions seems cool, but after reading them, something NEEDS to be in the game - coaches. The dynasty mode turns us into a coach, and last year coaches weren't in the game. NCAA Devs, you guys can remedy a HUGE fault many people have with the game by including coaches. Have us be able to create/edit our coach (like PS2) and see them roaming the sidelines and reacting (again, like PS2).

  • PIMitch23 said May 29, 2009

Wow... boilerfan1509 you got it exactly right brotha. Too much copy and paste by the NCAA people from Madden and less innovation. Innovation is why even though Madden always comes out with some bugs and mistakes here and there, everyone buys it anyways; they always have some sort of new technology that's not gimicky (like season showdown) and that tries to make the game better. Then NCAA uses it, just a year later (ex. the ability to break out of tackles throughout the animation).

Don't get me wrong, I'm somewhat excited for this year's NCAA, and I've already pre-ordered it. However it sounds like I might be disappointed like I was with last years game. Not so much with the graphics or presentation (although the presentation sounds like it could use some work; no chain gang? refs? seriously?!), but with the problem that you guys look to always add some re-hashed idea instead of really coming up with something fresh, that adds to the tradition and awesomeness that is THE GAME (not the gimmicks) of college football. Next year, get the small things right that make the game great, then build to that with ideas, tech., etc  that make NCAA it's own, not Madden's lil bro.

Yall hit the nail on the head last year with Online Dynasty; this game needs more things like that. Come up with things that makes the Madden guys have to copy and paste from you! Ben Haumiller, you're the designer. Take the the incredible potential that this game has and turn it into the star it should be every year.

IT'S GAMEPLAY LOOKS IDENTICAL TO LAST YEAR AND THEY HAVE 1 NEW MODE.. WHIIILE ON THE OTHER HAND NCAA HAS SEASON SHOWDOWN, TEAM BUILDER, ROAD TO GLORY, PLAYER LOCK, AND NOW THE ABILITY TO ACTUALLY STRATEGIZE AGAINST YOUR OPPONENT, AND IM SURE THEY'VE ADDED NEW OPTIONS IN ON AND OFFLINE DYNASTIES!! PEOPLE ARE SAYING MADDEN IS BETTER WHEN ALL THEY HAVE DONE IS PUT CHAIN GANGS AND MULTI-PLAYER TACKLES IN... NCAA HAS TRADITION WITH BANDS, AND MASCOTS, AND CELEBRATIONS!!! HEY MADDEN WHERE ARE YOUR MASCOTS???? OOOH YALL DONT HAVE THEM ... THATS COOL

    NCAA 10= #1 WOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!

  • bryantg said May 29, 2009

I think another defensive key you should add is to have one defender key a player instead of the whole team. (i.e. a CB to key(almost like man up) the Z reveiver even if you are in zone coverage. and the downfall would be that he obviously leaves his zone wide open. and if you know your opponent likes to run screens and you are in man coverage having another LB key the running back would be a big strategy move because if your wrong and that LB should be covering the TE then he is wide open for a big play. I can think of a lot of reasons why this would be a good idea and it doesnt affect the whole defense keying on one player but still could have some drawbacks that make it a strategic move.

  • bryantg said May 29, 2009

Another idea would be to have the DL's,LB's, and DB's have diffent keys but as a group. this would be very strong strategically too. for example if you know the oponent is running a screen you could have the defensive line go for the sack so the screen looks to be comin open but your LB's are keying a screen so they shut it down. i realize that this many defensive keys prolly isnt that easy to just slap in to the game but adding it to ncaa 11 would be good

  • MegaBearsFan said May 29, 2009

Not quite sure I understand the justification for more user strips resulting in more facemask penalties.  If a defensive player is attempting to use a hand to swat the ball out of the hands of the runner, shouldn't he be less able to wrap up and therefore be more likely to miss the tackle?

Having just one pro and one con for each setting doesn't make much sense.  Each of these should have more indirect effects that affect different aspects of a player's performance.

Other settings that could use some more indirect effects:

Holding blocks longer should also make a blocker less aware of what's going on in the play.  If he is focusing all his attention on blocking his guy, he might not be aware if the play changes direction and could end up uselessly blocking a back-side defender on a sideline play instead of breaking off and trying to get someone else who is pursuing the ball carrier.  He'll also be less likely to successfully pick up blitzes.

On the other side, not holding their blocks as long would mean they will be more likely to stop blocking a guy who is less likely to get to the play and instead break off to go after a corner or safety who might be running across the field to the ball carrier.  He will also be much more likely to pick up more dangerous blitzers rather than staying with a slow defensive tackly while a quicker blitzing backer runs right past him (on play-side) and takes down the ball-carrier in the backfield.

The run back or comeback setting for pass routes would be better if it could be assigned to individual receivers or positions.  For example, you might want your much faster starting wideout who can catch better to run down the field and try to burn the coverage deep, but keep your slower slot guys and tight ends closer to the play as dump-off receivers since they won't be outrunning anyone deep anyway.

The running back setting for making a big play should also cause him to be more likely to dive and reach for first downs or goal line and avoid running out of bounds.  Protecting the ball should make him more likely to run out of bounds to avoid big hits, and wrap up the ball rather than stretch or dive for first downs or the goaline.  It should also make an AI-controlled QB less more likely to keep the ball on option plays, or give it to the fullback on triple options.

I do, however, love the option to tell my defense to focus on the pitch back or QB on option plays.  One thing that my high school football coach always did when we played teams that ran an option offense was have one linebacker or safety assigned to watch the running back.  Any time they would run the option, that guy's sole assignment was to hit the pitch man as hard as he could.  Whether the QB pitched it to him or not.  The idea was to make sure that the pitch man knew he was going to get hit every time and make the other team afraid to run the option.  And if they stuck with the option, they'd end up fumbling the ball.  I wonder if this year's game will finally let me hit the pitch man even if he doesn't get the ball.  Wouldn't do much on single-player games (aside from increasing the running back's injury risk or possibly a minor affect to morale), but it could change how a multiplayer game works if it scares the other person away from using the option.

Well, sorry for the long post, those are my initial thoughts.  I'm not sure that I like the way that some of these are set up, I guess I'll have to wait and see how they play out.

  • MegaBearsFan said May 29, 2009

Now, as for the Linked Plays.  This is a long-overdue feature.  It looks like it has a lot of promise.

Something that bother me about it though:

Showing us a percentage kind of takes realism away.  I understand EA is trying to make it easy for the user to use, but it just seems weird to me.

    And a couple questions:

1.) Are the linked play relationships all one-to-one?  Does any given play only have one other play that it is linked to?  Or can the given example of the Power O and PA Power O also be linked with other plays at the same time like a Power O Counter or Power O QB Keeper or Power O WR Reverse or a Power O Flea Flicker?

2.) How are the linked plays set up in the play-book?  Is there a special menu of linked plays that are being set up?  Or does each page in the playbook have the two adjacent plays next to each other and we have to scan the whole playbook to find the ones we are setting up?  I think they've already answered this one in a previous blog by saying there is a special menu for it, but I don't recall specifically.

3.) Are trick plays and/or special teams plays linkable?  For example, if you kick a lot of field goals, will you be setting up the defense to be able to run a fake later in the game?  Are their kick/punt return reverses or other trick-ish kind of return plays that can be set up?

4.) Does audibling into a play count as setting up a linked play?  Or does using a hot-route to change the play cause it to no longer set up the linked play (because now the defense is seeing a slightly different play).

5.) Is there a special button that allows you to audible into the play that is set-up by your current play?  So if my play call is the Power O and I notice the defense lined up with 8 men in the box and only one safety, will I have a special command to audible into the PA Power O and take advantage of however well it has been set up so far?  Are such plays automatically added to the formation audible?  If not, then that would be a great thing to add, EA.

FYI, for those of you who are saying NCAA is going to be totally outsined by Madden, you should be reminded that many of the gameplay enhancements for Madden will also apply to NCAA 10.  Most of the new procedural animation branching is supposed to be supported by both Madden and NCAA.  The only major difference is that Madden's presentation looks like it will be much better and NCAA probably won't have the multiple-man gang tackles (just the 2 or 3 man stuff from last year).

The only thing that really upsets me that is in Madden which is not in NCAA is the apparent lack of on-field referees in NCAA 10.

  • j2k9 said May 29, 2009

Since you guys still don't have REFS or CHAINGANGS on the field for the 4th year in a row, are we at least going to have footprints during snow games like in Madden?  Where are the COACHES ON THE SIDELINES?

  • PIMitch23 said May 29, 2009

I like NCAA, I really do. And honestly there are some things about it that make it funner to play than madden. But it just always feels like a rehashed game more than madden does. I mean I hope NCAA is great, but I don't know how team builder and a forced on the player season showdown is the way to go to make this game better. Work on the small things like GETTING REFS AND CHAIN GANGS ON THE FIELD. ADD TO YOUR ONLINE DYNASTY, a feature that is one step in allowing NCAA to step outta the supposed shadow it's under. Fix animations, AI,etc. If it's in the game, it should be in the video game. THEN work on implementing things like Team Builder and Season Showdown. that's my main argument. Madden or no Madden; slow down on the gimmicky features, add to the realism that is a college football game first.

Anothing thing that NEEDS to be fixed and has been in the game for YEARS - Whenever I audible, the CPU audibles. Whenever I choose Fake Punt, the CPU chooses fake punt defense. It's like at certain times the CPU can read my mind. That needs to be fixed.

I think before each game you should be able to choose what position you're going to play and the camera focuses on that. This is for people like me who like to choose the position they play in real life [cornerback]. In the old maddens if you tried to be a corner the camera would block you out and you couldnt see the reciever thats bullcrap.

seriously, i have every ncaa game since 2003 and i feel like the only thing thats changed is graphics. let us customize our coaches and staff. let us customize the stadium and uniforms a little. also if i win a bowl game i want the hype and excitement inside the stadium such as confetti the awards ceremony and i want to see the players all hyped up and excited. ( crying, on their knees, etc.) i want it to feel real not like a game. do what EA sports is about "if it's in the game, it's in the game." No more gimmics, Maddden stepped up you guys need to do the same.

I don't like the percentages on the linked plays. That's too cheesy.  Setting up plays is all about feel and timing.  Also, the generic look for a pass play pre-read is about the same.  I've seen countless games where a defense was looking pass and was still duped on a good play action.  I can't be mad at the effort to make the game better.  I guess we will have to see how this all works out.

I think these are pretty good Ideas, but I do agree with a lot of the things everyone's saying. However, I think that both madden and ncaa MUST HAVE A TOURNAMENT MODE! When I played the playstation 2 maddens, my friends and I had tournaments every weekend! We are very depressed that that mode has been removed. TOURNAMENT MODE MUST RETURN! PLEASE!

I think its really messed up that so many gamers overseas would like to play Ncaa football 10 and EA continues to ignore them. Why is the xbxo 360 version region locked,im an american living in germany and would love to play ncaa football 10 on my 360 but again the game is locked up,i also have a ps3 with ncaa football 08 and 09,but its just not the same as xbox imo.So EA could please not region code the game so those people who dont live stateside can enjoy your product as well.

Does anybody know if this game will be REGION FREE??? Is 2 weeks away and no one knows. It´s quite strange giving the fact that the game must be gold already...

I think that ncaa football 10 shouldn't of taking the gameplay from madden 09 that is kinda of going backwards. ALso I think that some teams got robbed on there ratings. When are u going to allow other users too watch ur online games. That would be a great feature to add in an online dynasty.

The MAIN PROBLEM with NCAA (and Madden for that matter) is that they have NO COMPETITION!!!! They can put any kind of CRAP in the game and we have to take it because you cant go get a different college football game thats better. That is so UNAMERICAN! I agree we need more than the same old 10 second celebration after winning a game against a scrub team as YOUR BIGGEST RIVAL? And bowl games and the championship I mean come on guys you have ALL YEAR TO COME UP WITH STUFF TO PUT IN THE GAME AND THIS IS THE BEST YOU CAN DO? If I didnt love college football I would QUIT BUYING THESE CRAPPY VERSIONS of college football. And like before we cant even have FORMATION SUBS THAT WAS IN PS2? wth. NO COACHES that was in PS2? You  guys have a ton of great ideas right here and you should listen to what your customers want to see!!!! This is SO FRUSTRATING TO SEE THE POTENTIAL OF A GAME LIKE THIS GO TO WASTE! I HOPE AND PRAY THAT THE NCAA WILL NOT RENEW THEIR CONTRACT WITH EA THAT GIVES THEM EXCLUSIVE RIGHTS TO COLLEGE FOOTBALL GAMES!
