FIFA 10 - Refining, Responding And Innovating

Posted On: Jun. 15, 2009 8:58 AM EST By: EA Rom 62 Comments

By David Rutter, Line Producer, FIFA 10 Xbox 360 & PlayStation 3

By now you should have heard a fair amount about what's in store for FIFA 10. I'll cover them again here shortly - but we've a lot more coming soon, too. Throughout the end of June I'll be visiting London, Paris, Munich, Madrid, Milan, Warsaw and Moscow to get our game in front of more journalists and unveil a number of additional new features we have deliberately not mentioned yet. And during 19th to 23rd August we'll be proudly showing the game at GAMESCOM in Cologne with some more new features.

Anyway, back to the here and now.

We're really proud of FIFA 09. Quality wise the game was up there, but being football and football game fanatics we're never satisfied. So with FIFA 10 we wanted to address 3 key things.

1 - Refine our gameplay.
2 - Respond to feedback from our fans.
3 - Innovate in some really cool ways.

About 70% of our effort went on the first two items, whilst the remaining 30% was spent on the very cool new innovations we have already revealed and others that we will be revealing in the coming months.

Taking each in turn...

REFINING OUR GAME

When we look at FIFA 09 the overall quality of the gameplay is good. We've been building our 'Next Gen' gameplay for three years, and we have managed to address most of our fundamentals to a really satisfactory level.

However, there were still some frustrations and we wanted to address them. Week in and week out, when we watch real football games we see things that help us to identify how real football players behave and express themselves on the pitch. With this in mind we focused on a heap of things this year, namely:

Urgency: We wanted to replicate the degrees of urgency on the pitch. When players aren't involved in immediate 'action' they're more relaxed. As play gets closer they become more alert and responsive to what's going on around them. So in FIFA 10 this year you'll see a lot of different motions being used dependent on the state of the play and the 'threat' of the situation. We've also worked on new Face Ball logic, to ensure that players are correctly following the play and better prepared to react to the situation. This work even moves into players getting out of the way of teammates' passes and shots and players throwing themselves at the ball with effort - things like diving headers, sliding shots, falling clearances etc.

Trapping: Trapping is how the player gets into a position to control the ball, and how they control it. This year we wanted to get away from inappropriate 'earliest' trapping, where a player might move to a position where they would get the ball to touch them as soon as possible, to an 'easiest' trapping system, where players move to a position to get the ball under control as easily as possible. Essentially we gave the players more intelligence and awareness of where the most natural trapping position is. The net result: a more responsive ball-control mechanic to get the ball on the ground and under control.

Positioning: This year we wanted to ensure that players had more awareness of where their teammates were. A new system called Position Priority makes sure that defensive midfielders cover at the back if a centre back has gone up for a corner - and they won't leave their post until it's safe for them to do so. Similarly in attack, supporting players make more elaborate runs, analyzing space more effectively to curve, stay onside and create space for passes.

Passing: Yet again there was a lot of 'threat' analysis work going on. Passing players now have a greater understanding of the space ahead of teammates to make through balls more effective.

Shooting: We really wanted to improve the way the ball moves this year. So we created a tool that enables us to create a context-sensitive shooting mechanic. What this means is we can tune the error on shots based on the situation. Factors during a shot like the ball, foot and movement of both will now have the correct effect on the ball and lead to some really cool-looking shots.

Defending: We worked not just on the positioning as mentioned above, but also on the slide and standing tackles, and momentum on both. For slide tackling, good players now slide further, so you'll have more reach. They also have better targeting, so you'll generally go for the ball rather than the player. Obviously with more reach you've got to time them better, otherwise you'll be picking yourself up as the attacker is bearing down on goal. The standing tackle, which was very powerful in 09, is now less forgiving. Defenders will use more momentum in these tackles, so again, if you miss time your taackle you'll be committed to the wrong direction.

Keepers: [VIDEO] Lots of improvements here. We've looked at interception logic - calm and collected in low-threat situations, through to punches under pressure. Again, lots of urgency work too. The keepers are now far more aggressive coming off their line, but if caught off their line they can scramble back to scoop the ball out of danger. We also worked on the goalies' momentum to ensure his saves are realistic.

There's a heap more too - and I'm sure in upcoming blogs by Creative Director Gary Paterson and Gameplay Producer Aaron McHardy they'll be discussing these, and much more, in lots of detail.

RESPONDING TO FEEDBACK

VIDEO - FIFA 10 COMMUNITY DAY

So as I'm writing this we're nearing the 300 millionth game of FIFA. What a number. And what a lot of feedback. For me, feedback has taken two forms.

1 - Frustrations
2 - Requests

And I'll take each in turn...

Frustrations: I'm on the FORUMS a lot, posting and reading. There are a lot of people who love the game, and there are a lot of people who discover, report or exploit things in our game that they're unhappy with. So, we really want to make the people who have legitimate gripes happy, and the exploiters play fair. Some of the things we're changing are:

1. Stopping lofted through balls leading to 1-on-1 with the keeper.
2. Preventing goals being scored from kick off.
3. Improving shooting so you don't hit the woodwork so much.
4. Making our movement animations look better.
5. Working to make offsides less frequent and the advantage rule more intelligent.
6. Starting to remove scripted graphical sequences and adding quick free kicks.

We've done a lot more too, but this should give you a sense of how much we are actually listening to the frustrations people are telling us about.

Requests: The second part of responding is requests. This year we're proud to announce that we're including a Practice Mode within FIFA 10. Using the Back/Select button from the 1-on-1 arena, you'll be able to bring up a menu enabling you to choose to play a practice match or set pieces. You can change the number of players on each side, and a little blog exclusive here - it's multiplayer, too. Only locally though - you can't have your online friends join your practice match. But 5 v 5 outfield players, on a full size pitch, is now a reality :)

INNOVATIONS

VIDEO - BIG CHANGES

This year we really wanted to change the way the game played. One of the big things we wanted to do was firstly change the player control mechanic, but also to give people more freedom to express themselves realistically on the ball. We've managed to do this in three ways this year:

1. 360 Degree Dribbling
2. Skilled Dribbling
3. Freedom in Physical Play.

360 Degree Dribbling: Believe it or not the players in FIFA 09 could only move in eight directions. Up/Down, Left/Right and Diagonals. You might not have noticed it, but at times this led to a feeling of frustration in the way players dribbled and turned with the ball. 360 Degree dribbling totally frees you from those eight directional constraints. It's the first time ever in a football game; literally, a super-fluid way to move with the ball. We've introduced a larger area of 'control' in front of the players, wider dribble touches and a much more responsive and accurate pad reading system to allow you to go wherever you want. With practice it's even possible to switch the ball from one foot to the other.

Skilled Dribbling: In addition to the 360 system above we wanted to give skilled dribblers the ability to rapidly move the ball laterally. Imagine you're down near the corner flag and being pressed by a defender. By pressing the top left bumper you can take rapid, high fidelity touches of the ball to jink left and right to throw defenders' momentum. It's also useful in other areas of the pitch. I like to think of it as a more accessible skill move.

Freedom in Physical Play: With the wider dribble touches we added a new collision sharing system. In combination with the increased area of possession you're looking at 'overlapping' areas of control. A true fight for possession when you're shoulder to shoulder. It's more varied, and when the players are evenly matched can lead to some great extended and less predictable physical interactions on the pitch.

It's not all just about gameplay though.

Manager Mode

VIDEO - MANAGER MODE

We're fully aware on the team that Manager Mode is HUGELY popular. Outside 1 v CPU and 1v1 play it's the most played mode in the game. Using our 'responding to feedback' tag line, we just couldn't ignore the volume of requests coming in to address a number of areas in this mode. We've improved 50 major components to Manager Mode in the following areas:

1. Match Realism
2. Transfers
3. Player Development
4. Football Atmosphere

Match Realism: We've totally reworked our simulation engine. Results for simmed games are now generated minute by minute and are based on individual team strengths and weaknesses - down to the level of individual players, defensive, midfield and attacking lines, and formation. From the simulations we run here, we're really happy with the realism of the results we're generating, and our league tables look pretty believable too :)

Authentic Transfers: In 09 we were guilty of using financial clout as the main decider for transfer success. This year there's more decision points. Whilst money is still very important, career prospects and squad opportunity also play an important role in the success of a player's decision. You'll also have much more intelligent AI competing against you.

Player Developments: We wanted to make sure that players developed believably for FIFA 10 - so we've invested heavily in making intelligent player-growth curves based on a number of factors. These physical, mental and technical curves effect how well a player will develop, as well as where the developing player is based and how we'll they're performing.

Football Atmosphere: The world of football is constantly changing, at a high and low level, and we wanted to inject some much-needed authenticity here. You'll see AI rotating squads based on match performance, have real-time transfer updates on a week by week basis and summaries of what's going on in your football world.

The Future: We're looking at Manager Mode as a multi-year investment for us. It's going to take us a little while to get to a Manager Mode that matches the quality of our on-pitch gameplay - but we're really committed to pulling this off :)

IN CLOSING...

As I mentioned, that's about all I can talk about at the moment - and I know the guys here will be doing more in-depth blogs concerning their game features as the weeks and months go by. We'll also be releasing more info on what's going on regarding our other unannounced features over the coming weeks, too.

I'm looking forward to reading the feedback from this blog and hope that you're as excited about hearing this stuff as we are making it :)

Cheers,

D

I'm not a yearly purchaser of the FIFA franchise but love to hear about the manager mode improvements.  Also, this is exactly the kind of entry I love to see on these EA Sports updates.  Great length and great info, thanks.

  • Bonee123 said June 15, 2009

    I second that!

I was a PES Fan for years and have switched to FIFA09 a few month ago. With the improvements being announced here FIFA10 will be my first choice this year.

  • THenry121421 said June 16, 2009

i no its a little late now but would it be possible in the years to come to add champions league into manager mode like PES has?

  • saprisa said June 16, 2009

i think u should not put the Ultimate Team  for fifa 10 make no sense, we already built a team in the maneger mode, why in the heck have build another one, plus earn so freaking coins just 2 get a single player make no sense, EA should make manager mode playable for online that be way cooler, or take the Ultimate Team  section off and add the Champion League, but rather than that the game is hot

  • david_losada@hotmail.com said June 17, 2009

Can we get tattoos and jewelry at least for some players if it's not too late?

  • david_losada@hotmail.com said June 17, 2009

    ONE WORD: BERNABEUUUUU

  • chesy-reddevil said June 17, 2009

I'VE HAD EVERY FIFA GAME SINCE 97 - HUGE FAN ! But still lots of things in the games dissapointed me - so its great to hear that those things are being worked on !!! Thnx !... I agree with the BERNABEU stadium! and tattoos sound cool aswell!! I hope that wen you win a trophy in FIFA10 its much more realistic though. And having the REAL EUFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE in future Fifa's would be great since its to late to add it now. And maybe even seeing the managers on the sidelines and their reactions after goals and fouls would just be AWESOME MAN !!!! ... Thanks EA Sports for creating what I believe is the best football(or soccer as we call it) games ever !

  • buffalopride85 said June 17, 2009

looks amazing... fifa has always been consistent with thier games.... no bad games.

  • GALEANA1 said June 17, 2009

I think they should work on the fan in the stadium more when you score

  • NVMBR said June 18, 2009

Can you eliminate the unnecessary "Not enough players on the squad" logic from the transfers.  They are maddeningly ridiculous.  Just have the team acquire another player through their own means, and stop punishing me because I want Ribery or Villa.  This makes Manager Mode so painfully unrealistic.

...also make the game stop glitching and locking.

  • infamousrip said June 18, 2009

pes have de rights for the uefa champions league and europe league. and tatoo's..? this is football

  • idol_evra said June 18, 2009

i have played FIFA from 98 to 09 and i love it but i would like to see the managers on the side lines, their reactions to fouls red cards goals etc.i would like to c the subs when they are made.i would like to see more interviews and to set up the training sessions.i am not workin an i cant buy the games i have to wait for someone to buy it 4 me, i jus wish i could download it for free.i am the HUGEST FAN of FIFA

  • AceJoe said June 18, 2009

I'm a fifa's fan since 1998, my first game, and i never changed for another, but there's something about it that intrigues me and it's about South America. I believe we have the some amount of costumers as Europe does, but in manage mode we see europeans clubs fighting to get into the Champions League while in Brazil's championship for example, they just fight for the championship and Brazil's Cup. We could have the Libertadores da America to fight for and the winner could head to the Mundial. And we could at least have Morumbi and Maracana as stadiums. If they can't put it into the game, at least put it as downloadable.

  • Danniijai said June 19, 2009

FIFA player since 2000, I have all the games from 2000 up to 2009 including the Euros as well as World Cup and Champions League on PS2. However one issue I have is that when you play certain teams that have uniforms especially jerseys that are the same color as your own team sometimes you get a little confused when looking at the screen. Please allow us the users to control uniforms layout such as picking out the socks, jerseys and shorts for both teams.

  • Danniijai said June 19, 2009

I would like to be able to create and customize my own freekicks. Example: if I wanted to have two guys step over the ball before the actually player kicks it or players squabbling over who should take the ball but then it is taken quickly, things like that. Also can you add more tournaments like the Confederations Cup etc.

I was wondering if speed has been adjusted to stop people from abusing players like ronaldo or messi. Both players in 09 were easily able to get past a majority of LBs or RBs in the game.

when will the producers of this great game add a local only search option for online play .i know they have my country lobbies but thats not enough.

play now should have an option to search local only or local( which searches locally before searching abroad )just like in call of duty waw .

i know you can do this cause in fifa 09 when the gillette competetion was on you could play someone local everytime which was great but once the competetion was over it went back to searching for anyone which is so crap.

every gamer online knows fifa is unplayable once there is lagg it might look smooth but all your controlle are comprimised by the 1-2 second delay .

LOCAL SEARCH OPTION IS WELL OVERDUE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Could you add control over ticket sales, concession stands, more sponsership, and advertizment more relistic for example when a team is doing bad during the season fans stop coming to the stadium and the team start losing money, and also at the end of the season teams that did good should be rewarded larger amounts of money in sponserships and by that I mean 3to5 sponsors one for the jersey one for the stadium etc and when a team signs for new jersey sponsor can the old one be replaced for the new one, not to forget please please please include more realistic stadiums SPECAILY MANCHESTER CITY STADIUM I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO FIFA 10 THANK YOU VERY MUCH

  • k1nGjAMes139 said June 24, 2009

To add on to what Danniijai said, I think you guys should do more work on set pieces from free kicks. Other than shooting, theres no other real chance of scoring from it. In real life, teams actually have plays that they run to get a guy open for the possible header. In Fifa 09 all the players just stand there and watch, its frustrating.

  • Niltinho23 said June 25, 2009

The biggest issue i found with FIFA 09 is the pace. Mainly, the super players ere impossible to stop and that takes so much away from the game. Cristiano Ronaldo, KAKA, messi, ibrahimovic, Torres just to name a few. But be bu worse then that is the discrepancy when comparin to lesser known teams like ones from the brazillian league. I may be a little buised for I am brazillian but the stronger teams such as Man U, Barca and Inter are a better team because of talent and not because of pace. If the players from the brazillian league had the correct pace applied to them we would see many more games online that did not include Man U and Barca. I use the brazillian league as an example but i mean all other teams. Make PACE more realistic.

  • Niltinho23 said June 25, 2009

    Now my requests

We Brazillians are the winningest nation and the most known for soccer yet we do not have 1 brazillian stadium... I believe we deserve at least the MARACANA

Put the Fenomeno Ronaldo's actual face on him! Hes too big of a name to be just a generic nobody.

Ability to pieces of uniform seperately...(jersey,shorts,socks)

If UT is coming back...put in all the leagues that the game is liscensed for! That should create sum diversity on the teams...

Many more requets but i think everythin else has been covered...Thanks EA!

  • Coscarinho_06 said June 26, 2009

im experiencing difficulties playing my fifa09 game, it says i have to be online in order for me to prove the ownership of this game, will i be able to play the game offline, or do i need to stay connected always?

  • RockyTop Gunner said June 26, 2009

Great additions....here are some more things to add to your list:

Tournament mode fatigue: have actual dates tied to fixtures so that your players fatigue in created tournaments. Its more strategic to be forced to utilize your team's depth in these tournaments instead of running the same 11 out every match because they don't get tired

Manager Mode player form: the player's form should play a role in his performance on the field, like a multiplier off his base statistic levels. Creates a more dynamic team experience. There can be many variables that effect form.

Set Pieces: this is probably the most glaring failure in FIFA. No control over set piece tactics except who takes the kick. I'd like to see more strategy like who actually pulls forward....I'm tired of bornstein and cherundolo coming up on corners while bocanegra and onyewu sit back and watch from mid field. Also need better options for layoffs and shots under the wall.

Be a pro mode: I love playing as a single player, but the season mode is too hollow. Allow users to play with a single player in manager mode from game to game to get the best of both worlds. The mode doesn't need to be built around a single player but you still get the strategic draw of locking down a single position from game to game.

Ultimate Team: this was a great expansion and I'll buy it again next year if something is done about training. Having every player a 99 ruins the game and I have since stopped playing it online for this reason.

Lastly, more international teams, I love creating tournaments with national teams....and yes,I still bought the last Euro & WC titles.

Keep up the great work guys.

euro, asia, africa, oeasania, north and south america national football teams playing in there own zone tournaments may come on fifa games is a dream.

    HI,

I would like to say that I have always been a big fan for a long time, but I really got into Fifa about 2 years ago.

I had been playing PES the previous years and I gave Fifa a try and loved it.

I don't think everyone always hears it, but you did a great job and keep up the good work on the improvements.

I can't wait to pick up fifa 2010

I did have some thoughts on what I would like to see in future Fifa games:

In be a pro, have teams recruit you through a try out, build your BAP up in the reserves to the first team- then renogitate with your current club or accept a contract to another club

Open up the national team pool so all teams that are in the process of qualifing for the World Cup are available (if this is too late, then offer it as a DLC) - I would rather pay a little more for a game so this is available

Tie in the BAP to all current club and national team schedules (play more than 5 national games a season).  Allow for all of the clubs domestic cups.

Create drama for BAP - team and management feedback that gets you to want changes in BAP

sort of like the Tevez situation at Man U., where your BAP may want to fight for a change because you don't like how the club values your BAP, not getting enough playing time

player improvement in BAP varies depending on which club you play for or amount of playing time given

Let me know if this helps or if you want me to explain something in further detail.

    Thanks

yea i like the changes yall have talked about so far u guys can have a little more sponsors and when choosing the sponsor pleasew dont let us have to do all the math and also try to switch the match balls around like if its a champions league match get an adidas ball if its premier league get a nike one customise kits too its cool to sometimes mix things around be able to change the kit numbers for the players because kaka doesnt look good with #45 and add the bernabue and maracana the 2 biggest staidiums in the world and u guys missed them and u should atleast put the players after winning holding up a trophy cuz all they do hug each other like little gay wads make more news paper things too like the ones in 08 were preatty good

  • mnelsorona said July 01, 2009

oh and also do not put ronaldinho in the cover

hes old man come on put some better players like u can have messi and cristiano ronaldo or rooney and john terry and for the north american cover i would rather have any player playing for a european club besides ronaldinho on the cover then the mexican goalie and maurice edu

manager mode: player numbers, transfer battles, player trading transfers, if your a lower team make it harder to sign bigger names, e.g. if your blackburn you cant sign fabregas or someone like that even if the price is right, longer transfers, pre season games, better trophy scenes, like if your team wins a trophy, it should show them lifting it and celebrating not just a silly team pphoto (this is were pro evolution totally beats fifa manager mode by far)

player kits: like rolled up sleves like ronaldo, under shirt thing rooney and many other players wear, kit style depending on weather so short if hot, long if cold on some players, more boots. create teams and kits like pro evo, better player faces, change silly things like weak headers which make keeprs dive for nothing, smarter keepers, so if he doesnt need to dive, DON'T. change things like a player like gary neviell out pacing someone like lennon and stop players like lennon out muscle players like terry. i have many more ideas.

alos on manager mode why does a player who has played 1 game scored 1 goal stay on best player of the season board and win it, i was torres on 09 and scored over a 100 goals with him and he didnt win player of the season and didnt even make team of the season, that really really needs to be fixed!!

FIFA 2010 should have(In my opinion) 2 added leagues

    -Primera Division Argentina

    -and the Russian Premiere League.

and take off those unknown 2nd divison teams from "Rest of World"

but keep the four Greek teams and the 2 S.African teams and add Al-Ahly,LDU Quito,America de Cali,Colo-Colo,Peñarol,Gamba Osaka, and other famous teams.

    and take off the 1st & 2nd Coca-Cola leagues.

    and for the countries...

-Canada      -Egypt    -Nigeria   -Colombia    -Angola      -Wales

-Chile       -Venezuela  -Iraq    -Japan       -Guatemala   -Cote d'Ivory

-Peru        -Honduras   -Senegal  -Haiti      -Bolivia     -Israel

-Belize      -Panama     -Tahiti     -Ghana      -Trinidad y Tobago -Cuba

-Jamaica     -Korea DPR  -Suriname -Dominican Republic   -Solomon Is.

-Costa Rica  -El Salvador  -Saudi Arabia  -Iran  and lastly Kuwait

i agree with the weather, kits, tattoos, and the trophy celebrations.

In create your won club I think that you should have a better options on creating your logo, kits, name (it only lets you type them in capital letters) and when you play a game it will show your crest NOT just an EA Ball. Also you should be allowed to create your own Stadium (such as the Name,Capacity,Shape and Structure, and the location [like in all the Madden Games] also create your own trophy and celebration.

And the fans should have flares, flags, and banners and do the Mexican Wave (like in the already mentioned Madden Games).A juggling mini game should be added and custom soundtrack!!

    Hi liebes Ea- Sportsteam,

    Dear Mr Rutter,

I as well as half the gaming world out there love playing Fifa and the Fifa Online experience but i am very unhappy to report about the current state of the glitches that are plaguing the current fifa available. Users have found a way to make it possible for a 'dream team' to be used and played with in online ranked matches e.g. Messi, Ronaldo and Eto upfront for Blackpool FC. This is really killing the gaming experience for most of use as it is near impossible to beat or play against this kind of thing. The ranking system has completely gone out the window with people who know about this 'dream team' willing to spill the beans to other users for a trade of 5 wins to go up in rank. Surley a patch can be created to stop this? I have read on some sites that EA will do nothing about this because Fifa 10 will be coming out soon but what about people that may not be able to afford it but have Fifa 09 or for people that like Fifa 09 rather than Fifa 10 (i cant see this happening) but all being maybethis is the case for some people, will they still have to put up with glitchers and there dream teams?

    Regards

    Anthony

If I could have one thing it would be a co-op online manager mode.  I'd love to be able to play a season against the AI with a friend online.  This game is great as long as you want to play against other live players, but I don't always want to do that.  I like manager mode and online competition doesn't usually match my skill level anyway (most online players are better than me).  We need more love for the co-op players!

    Hola
