FIGHT NIGHT Round 4 - Showdown on Sunset Recap

Posted On: Jun. 24, 2009 1:11 PM EST By: sk88z 10 Comments

Last night in Hollywood EA SPORTS rolled out the red carpet at the House of Blues with the launch event of the year dubbed the Showdown on Sunset.  The event featured some of the game's biggest names, musical guests, and other Hollywood notables in an evening where fight fans were invited to not only get a look at but to also get their hands on the most anticipated game of the year.

The evening began when the stars arrived and walked the carpet posing for pics, talking about the game with the media, and getting a little time on the sticks at the end of the line.  The crowd on hand not only got a chance to see boxing greats in Iron Mike Tyson, Sergio "The Latin Snake" Mora, and "Sugar" Shane Mosley, MMA fighters were also in the house including Dan "Punkass" Caldwell from Tapout.

The Showdown on Sunset began with our ring announcer introducing the first two combatants to take the stage:  Mosley vs Mora in what proved to be a good opening fight of the evening.  After what was deemed a warm-up fight where Mora got knocked down early and was unable to get up, both fighters agreed to a rematch, caught their bearings and went at it in the second "official" fight.

The fight was fast paced and fierce as both fighters slugged it out.  Mora looked to have the upper hand at one point even knocking down the virtual Mosley.  But with the crowd behind the Welterweight champ, Mosley shook off the knockdown and in the third round knocked Mora down twice.  The second time, Mora could not get on his feet before the 10-count.

In between fights gamers in the packed venue got a chance to play the full version of the game on one of the dozen stations set up all around the House of Blues.  From the awesome graphics to the feel of the punching power, fans had nothing but good things to say about Round 4.

Next up was the main event between Snoop Dogg and in my personal opinion, the greatest knockout king of the ring, Iron Mike Tyson.

The fight between Tyson and Snoop's specially created character for the game, Malice, lived up to all the hype.  Tyson came out bobbing and weaving and looking to get inside reminiscent of the Champ in his prime.  Malice, not to be outdone, dished out plenty of punches to the roar of the crowd in his corner and caught Tyson walking in a few times with big hooks and uppercuts of his own in the early rounds.

Tyson's aggressiveness however would seem to be his downfall as Malice would counter the Champ's own signature uppercuts with pounding body shots dizzying Tyson late in the fourth and put the Champ on the mat with only a couple of seconds left in the fight.

The Showdown on Sunset Champ would be decided in the hands of the judges.  All four scorecards had Snoop on top.  Following the fight, Tyson proudly presented Snoop with a check for $5000 to go towards Snoop's charity, the Snoop Youth Football League.

Music and EA SPORTS games go hand-in-hand and the night was highlighted with an appearance from Snoop's nephew Young Dre who performed a tight set on stage including one of the title songs from the game, Cheah Beah.  Also performing was Pete Rock who closed the evening with some slick hip-hop beats to the delight of the fans in the house.  I'll have more pics to come so stay tuned for that!

After a few years in hiatus, the FIGHT NIGHT series makes its return in grand fashion.  Will you be one of the many going FTW and challenging for a shot at the Online World Championship?  More details on that to come, but for now, get your copy when it hits the stores this week and meet me, sk88z, online on XBL if you're up for the challenge!

To the team who worked on FN4 - Great job! I am thoroughly enjoying the game. Now, for the next one, can we get a ref running round the ring? I don't actually care that there is not one in the ring while fighting because I just get so into the boxing while playing but it would be cool to have added in if u can for the future.

  • DJNUPE said June 24, 2009

Why can't the PS3 version utilize custom soundtracks for ring entrances?

  • GHsu said June 24, 2009

the game is true to the Fight Night series. i'm enjoying it so far. a couple things:

    - i really dislike the training games so far. to me, they're pretty difficult because the stick is rather hard to use accurately so things like the heavy bag take way too much effort because you need to make sure you're not even a little off.

    - maybe i just suck, but i'm landing a really low percentage of punches (<60%) while getting creamed most of the times (usually >60% and even >70%). the computer is awfully good at blocking and clinching when they're stunned.

    - i really want to see some DLC updates soon. i'd love to see what you guys have to offer. new fighters, new venues, and hopefully adding new control schemes would be great. face button punching is just far more accurate and also easier on my Dualshock 3.

    - is it possible to import music to the game on the PS3? let's make it happen guys. MLB The Show 08 had this feature. let's do it. please.

    - once again, maybe i suck, but it's unnecessarily hard to get up when you get knocked down.

that's all. i just had an epic fight with Roy Jones Jr. and Joe Calzaghe. and Calzaghe got his ass kicked. sweeeeeeeeet.

ummmmm they need the old controllers...i cnt use the stick...it sucks..i only had one fight since i bought the game im waiting for dat update wen they put back the old controller settings back...and the game feels a little to arcadish...round 3 was a great game but i think round 4 is under round 3

  • sk88z said June 25, 2009

Thanks for the props Trey!  DJNUPE, this is something the team is looking into possibly for DLC...we'll keep you updated.

GHsu & xxEastwick08 - appreciate the feedback.  there is a learning curve though and it's gonna take a bit to get used to the new controls.  It is a challenge, but I guarantee you that you'll get it with some practice.  AI is pretty good, though with a little patience with those training exercises you'll get it.  I've challenged a lot of gamers and they've stepped up and I've been impressed.

Gotta tell ya, though, Snoop loves the game ;)

  • TreyIM2 said June 25, 2009

Thx, sk88z. I agree with you about the controls. People just need to get on that learning curve and stop wanting games to be so easy for them but I do have to admit, for a BRIEF moment when the demo came out, I wanted to try out button punches - Lol - but I'm an analog head since the inception of analog controls on the PS1 when NOBODY I knew wanted to use them, period, so when FN 2004 introduced analog punching, I was right there on it. And yea, I tried button punches, back then, but I was more compelled to stick with analog punching.

GHsu - Yea, u suck, lol, but it takes time. It is definitely a steep learning curve when your not used to the analog punching. U REALLY have to focus on exactly where u are pushing the joystick while in the thick of a match. Can be trying but after a while, it becomes second nature.

xxEastwick08 - FN4 arcadish compared to FN3??? That is the second comment I've read since the game was released that someone has said that. I think you're just mad that you can't get the controls down. THIS game is more realistic than FN3. U gotta be more strategic with your punches against the CPU, at least, losing stamina and getting blasted by a really good shot takes a larger toll on a fighter where as before, not as much. FN3 was way more robotic, as well. I even stopped playing FN3 after I got through career mode, switching weight classes and all. I had no reason to replay it. U can be mad that u are not good at analog punching but don't make that ridiculous statement about FN4 being "under" FN3. FN4 is not perfect but it is way better and more realistic than FN3.

okay i finally figured out the training games after practicing them a couple times. i was definitely going about it the wrong way for most of them, though i can't say i like them any more than the old ones from FNR 2 and 3.

another thing i thought i'd throw out there is that the analog controls work a little better on the XBox because the sticks on those are a little smaller and the range of motion is smaller. on the Dualshock 3 the sticks feel too big and the arcs that you swing for hooks and uppercuts feel really big compared to that on an Xbox.

on a final note, i realized why i sucked so much was because my created player sucked. i played a couple fights in Fight Now and found it much easier to land and dodge. it really IS about finding a fighter tailored to your style, which is actually really cool.

anyway. just wanted to amend what i said before, since i didn't play it all that much before i posted.

  • DJNUPE said June 25, 2009

Thanks for looking into it sk88z.  It is a great game.

  • scope572er said June 28, 2009

i like the game, except for some minor things..

( ive been playing the game since i got it delivered friday by amazon, like 48 hours non stop with only a couple of hours in between to sleep..)

.and right when i thought i was getting used to the new TPC, i got into the legacy mode and played the training game...W@#$ the F@#$!!! i think the training games are way too difficult, in previous fight nights when the fighter was a noob and he was training, the amount of score needed to get full benefit was low, at first, then as he improved that high score will get tougher to achieve....but they actually expect someone to reach championship scores in the beginning?..asinine..

THERE SHOULD BE A "RETRY" OPTION in legacy mode menu during training sessions..one little mistake and everything is ruined..

i think the TPC is just a ploy by ea to make it as crappy as possible for people to buy the DLC :P...(it takes a loooong time to learn them...but you'll get there..eventually)

oh and the reason it looks "arcadey" is because if you examine any fight it looks like two guys throwing random punches!!! (until someone gets a counter and lands a terrific-jab?!?)...ko by a jab..thats nice..(gotta keep your hands up or else your opponent is going to JAB YOU TO DEATH especially in G.O.A.T..)

oh and  for those who want a "simulator" HA! i got an idea for a simulator...LACE UP THE GLOVES and get into a real gym!!!!!....there's your simulator!!!..you whimps..(the only word i could think of for replacing a curse word that begins with a "P")

i go to the gym 6 time a week to get my head pounded, this game is not a simulator...

this is a boxing GAME lets not forget that!

GHSU: i believe so..i mastered the tpc in fight night round 2,3!! but i had an xbox..decided to go with the ps3, the dualshock controller is different.. for example when throwing a hook to the head, make the  circle motion upright without touching the outer edge, because if you touch the edge...u'll end up throwing a body shot...

    TREY:a ref?..ppfff! lame.. UNLESS I CAN PUNCH HIM TOO!!!:D..sweet..

custom tracks is a must guys ....what generation game consoles are we on?!?..get it together...

i hope it doesnt take a fight night round 12! to get it just right...

    deuces...

  • GHsu said June 29, 2009

something i just discovered too... you can't matchup fighters more than 2 weight classes apart??? what if i feel like seeing what would happen between Manny Pacquiao and Mike Tyson? what if i'm fighting my friend and he wants to be a heavyweight because he hasn't played the game before, and i can be a flyweight fighter so that the playing field is a little more level? why am i not allowed to do it if i want to? this was a weird restriction that wasn't present in other iterations of Fight Night. i'm not throwing a hissy fit about it or really complaining about it because it's fine- if you can't do it, then you can't do it- but you could before, and i was just really surprised that you wouldn't be able to do it in FNR4!
