Tiger Woods PGA TOUR Online: What to Expect From Beta 2

Posted On: Jul. 1, 2009 8:48 AM EST By: raczilla 11 Comments

On May 19th we held an early private Beta for Tiger Woods PGA TOUR Online.  While the number of beta testers for this first Beta was relatively small, we were able to come away with some great feedback from the group.  The first Beta focused heavily on our core gameplay and technology, allowing our testers to get a feel for the overall Tiger Woods PGA TOUR Online experience.  As a development team, it was very helpful to watch the play trends of our test group.  We tracked and recorded many different statistics throughout the beta period which helped us make decisions about what to focus on for Beta 2.

Some interesting stats from Beta 1:

•    The most holes played by a single user over the 12 day Beta period was 367 holes or 20 rounds of golf.
•    In total 454 rounds of golf were started and 232 rounds of golf were completed during the Beta period.
•    The most holes completed in a single day by a single user was 101 or almost 6 rounds of golf.
•    The best score recorded on the leaderboards was a 51.
•    The longest drive was 305.52 yards and the longest putt was 35.51 feet.

Community activity was high during the Beta period; our Forums generated 126 topics and 501 posts in 12 days.  Most who participated were passionate about the game and seemed to genuinely want to help us track down issues and refine the experience.  I can’t thank this group enough as they have provided us with some great insight and helped make the first Beta a success.
As we get ready to launch Beta 2, I just wanted to give you all a quick preview of the updates and features you can expect for the next release.  If you haven’t yet signed up for the Beta, visit our website by clicking on the image below:

Signing up is easy and participating in the Beta is a great opportunity to take an active role in the development of an EA SPORTS game.  Beta 2, which opens on July 7th, is set to be much larger in size than our initial Beta.  We plan to give out around 5,000 Beta invitations to beta candidates who have signed up over the past few weeks.  If you’re not chosen to participate in Beta 2, don’t be discouraged.  There will be a larger Beta towards the end of the summer and an Open Beta in early fall.  In Beta 2, we’ll be introducing a host of new features and new content.  Below is a listing of some of what you can expect to see in Beta2:

Career Progression – in the initial Beta, everyone played as Tiger Woods with maxed out skills.  In Beta 2, you’ll be able to start your own career as an amateur level golfer and build up your skills over time.  With the new career system, you’ll earn money by playing good golf and then you’ll be able to spend that cash to upgrade your skills and improve your game.

Swing Trainer –
essential to every professional golfer’s skillset is his or her ability to perfect every element of their swing for each shot type they need to perform while out on the course.  Exclusively for Tiger Woods PGA TOUR Online, the Swing Trainer breaks down your golf swing into several components based on the different shot types you need to master (full, pitch, chip, putt, etc.).  You’ll also be able to unlock new shot types and abilities throughout your career.

Course Mastery – In golf, you compete against the environment and we wanted to capture that unique feeling in Tiger Woods PGA TOUR Online.  Each course has its own characteristics and its own series of challenges that you’ll need to take on to become a Course Legend.  As you master each course, you’ll unlock the ability to change the difficulty of that course including more challenging tees and pins, wind speed, fairway/green speeds, etc.  Taking on courses with higher difficult settings increases the rewards you’ll earn for scoring well while playing on those courses.

New Courses – In the last Beta, the only playable course was TPC Sawgrass.  For Beta 2 we will include both TPC Sawgrass and the legendary Pebble Beach Golf Links as playable courses.  There may even be a surprise to come during the Beta on the courses front.  Stay tuned for more info!

We plan on releasing some new content and possibly launching an additional feature during the next Beta as well.  Since our plan is to create a new content delivery system for Tiger Woods PGA TOUR Online, we’ll want to test our ability to dynamically update the game on the fly.  Our help/support web portal will also be active during Beta 2 and will contain a game guide as well as answers to frequently asked questions.  This portal will be frequently updated with more information throughout the Beta.  We’re also introducing a new way for beta testers to submit bugs to us.  Instead of relying solely on the forums, we’ll provide a web form that can be accessed both on the site and in the game which allows beta testers to select a bug category and enter details about the issue they encountered.  This feature will greatly improve our ability to track and resolve issues during and after the Beta.

Hopefully this quick overview has given you some insight into what to expect from the next Beta.  Of course, we’ll still have all of the original features that were included in the previous Beta such as 3-Click, the EA SPORTS Communication Bar (which has been improved and updated), Friends Lists, Leaderboards, Forums, etc.  If you would like to be a part of this exciting new Tiger Woods PGA TOUR experience, please sign up now.  There are still some open slots for Beta 2.
Hope to see you there!

-Greg

Graphics look great! Lowest score a 51? That's disappointing, is there any way to make it harder?

Awesome, looking forward to it. Signed up for the beta a while ago so I hope I get in. Currently playing Tiger 10 on the Wii.

This is cool they should make a version of NHL 10 for online play on PC

  • BDUBYAS said July 02, 2009

many others are experiencing online.  Whenever I quit a tournament or even complete my round and submit my score,  I get taken back to the main menu background screen where the prompt box displays the words "retrieving Details"...And the silouette of Tiger swinging over and over again.  I get froze on the screen and always have to sign out then sign back in or go to my dashboard and reboot the game.  So if your noticing a drop in players playing the tournaments it's because half of my friends list is having this issue.

Also ...Why do your stats have to drop everytime you play a online tournament.   This makes everyone were the max stats suit.  I don't think thats right at all.   How do you expect people to keep there 12 attributes..  Theres no way you can mantain a 3 ft to the pin average when your playing tour mode with a 31 cross wind on every other hole..It makes no sense.  The result is everyones golfer is wearing the same outfit.

A couple other bugs I've been seeing online are as follows.. When you hit a shot that lands in the cup (like a dunk or swish shot) , 80% of the time the ball shoots out and goes strangly rolling out of bounds.  It's happened to me and many others.  The ball will land in the hole then just magically start rolling through rough all the way till it goes out of bounds.

Also When some one makes there approach shot in the cup the game and cameras will kinda freeze up and the ball almost gets stuck just kinda bouncing around in the hole and you have to sign out and go to your dash board resulting in a loss a dnf and a large amount of your rank points.  Everyone knows this, so it turns into a waitng game to see who will reboot first.

Last year it was the 2 inch glitch.  That doesn't happen anymore but the new glitch that I beleive is a by product of the 2inch glitch happens way to often. this is were your ball is backspinning (rolling right tward the cup) and then once it gets to the very edge of the cup it comes to a complete stop like it hit a brick wall. It never hits the pin never makes a sound just stops dead in its path right on the lip anywhere from 2 to 5 inches away.  I was in a best ball game yesterday and we were 1 shot down.  The 17th was a par 3... me and my partner both had this occur were we hit the perfect shot and the ball just stopped on the lip of the cup.  We lost when it should of been a tie.

I just think there are some minor bugs with the hole and the pin that could be easily looked into.  Especially in simo stroke.  where alot of times  you hit a pin that you cant see.  And it also seems like once one player hits a pin or cup then the next player cant make the shot. the ball won't go in.  The 2nd player can hit the pin though the ball just wont stay down.  But once the 2nd player hits the pin after the first player has, then it makes it possible for a third or fourth to make the shot.  I'm not sure if it's the host who hits the pin first   or how it works but there are some definate bugs with the pin that have affected the result of many games I've been in..It truly has me stumped.

Last I would like to ask why we still get so punished in rank points  when the ea server boots us or when someone looses connection.  The leaderboard online for tiger woods pga tour has never reflected the best players.  only the people who play themselves or only play against level ones.  It can takes weeks to get your rank were you would like it and all the sudden just because the sever boots you you loose 30% of you points.  That will take your rank from like 10th all the way to say 110th.  It's not fair and it's been the same for years now. The closest it was to a legitimate leaderbord was in 2006.  There were still cheaters but thats a given..  And what happened to not loosing points when your partner disconnects.  I was told in person to my face at the Champions of gaming tournament that This would be a thing of the past.  But yesterday a thunder storm cut my partners connection and I went from 14th in the world to 145th.   Why does this still happen?  And why can you not get in the beginers lobby after a certain skill level is obtained but you can custom search and jump into there games all you want.

Thanks for taking the time to read this.   And thanks for charging us money for the #1 requested addition to this years game by all the fans ...Fantasy courses!    Why can't you guys fix the online rank system.  Why can you kick people from "RANKED" games?   So a skill level 20 player doesn't have to play anyone that has a chance at beating him as long as he hosts evertime.  Yet he'll still be able to increase his rank and skill level by playing noobies all day.  NOT FAIR.  This is competetive online gaming is it not!?   does Tiger Woods say ..."Oh man Phil Michelson is playing in this Tourney , he could beat me...I'm not playing in that one!"

Alll the above is all that is wrong with A very well made game.  Like I've said before I think this is the best Tiger yet!  It just still has some of the same issues it's had for 5 years now!

Last I wanted to mention that everyone doesn't get the same wind in online games .  So when your playing online in gale force your opponent could have a 30 helping wind when you get a 30 wind in the face. causing a 3 shot swing causing you to lose the match.  It happens in almost every single game i'm in. No matter the wind settings me and partner have different winds a so does the other team.  I know the game wasn't designed that way..So again It's just another bug that has been needing a fix since last years version.

And what ever happened to being able to have million dolloar four ball games.  That was so much fun...It would allow for more earnings to be circulated and you wouldn't have newbys gambling away there only 5000 dollars on there first game and then being unable to join any more games that have a wager.  It really makes no sense.  every one should get started with like 5 million instead of 5000.

PLEASE GIVE US A PATCH !!!!!!!!!!   any questions contact me through gamertag BDUBYAS or email bdubyas@yahoo.com

you realize raczilla is discussing PC TW Online ?

sounds like you're referring to a console version since TWO isn't available yet, it's still in Beta and not available until Beta 2 starts (soon)

Nice info, Greg, .......... but as noted by many of us during the beta....... the putting stats were not reliable. I made a few putts in excess of 60 ft, as did others.
