FIGHT NIGHT Round 4 - Q&A with Mike Mahar

Posted On: Jul. 7, 2009 10:44 AM EST By: sk88z 31 Comments

FIGHT NIGHT Round 4 has been on the North American shelves for a couple of weeks and has now hit the streets world wide as fans of the series battle their way to ring supremacy.  There's been a lot praise for the game and the community has been very vocal with what they love about it along with areas that they would like to see improved.

And since the game has launched, as they have been throughout the development process, the team has been listening.

I had a chance to ask some questions about what the community can look forward to seeing in the near future and this is what Producer Mike Mahar had to say.

Q1 - What can fans expect to see in the first DLC pack later in August?  Can you go into detail on the new training gym, sliders, and some of the equipment that will be available?

Mike Mahar - Fans can expect to see some updates in our first DLC pack.  We’ve addressed several of the important Legacy Mode issues including:
-    Boxers missing their hair textures
-    Gamer’s able to schedule two fights at once and then not being able to continue their career
-    Additional bugs that caused Legacy Mode freezes to occur

Gamers have noticed that the new training gym is a modern upscale training gym. Previously the gym was only available in Legacy Mode, but with the update it will be unlocked for use in Fight Now.

We’ve also introduced new gameplay sliders that give gamers the ability to tune and tweak the following attributes:
-    Counter Punch Window
-    Boxer Stamina
-    Punch Accuracy

Gamers can use these settings to further customize the game play experience. If they think they’ve got something worthy of sharing, they can use our File Share system to share them with other FIGHT NIGHT Round 4 gamers.

Fans can also expect to see some new equipment consisting of:
-    All American Gloves
-    All American Shoes
-    Jordan Brand Trunks

Q2 - Will there be new fighters made available in the future as well?

Mahar - While I can’t say for sure whom we’ll be offering, I can say we’re always looking to add more boxer’s to our existing roster. There are past, present, and future greats we’re pursuing and trying to sign. We want to grow the boxer roster and give gamers as many of the boxers they’ve asked for as possible. Stay tuned for more info moving forward.

Q3
-  Can you go into detail about the updated control scheme that fans will see in September and why the game didn’t ship with punches on the face buttons in the first place?

Mahar - The updated control scheme will allow users who are accustomed to using button controls from FIGHT NIGHT Round 3 to return to using buttons in FIGHT NIGHT Round 4. They are very similar in their implementation. The reason they weren’t originally included in FIGHT NIGHT Round 4 was two-fold:
     1.  We didn’t want to put them in the game without extensive testing and tuning to ensure we avoided the mistakes of FIGHT NIGHT Round 3 where some users perceived there to be an advantage to using buttons versus the Total Punch Control. It took some time, but we’ve accomplished that goal.  In FIGHT NIGHT Round 4 it is just as easy to throw fast punches and combos with TPC as it is with the buttons. Gamers will not notice any difference or advantage versus the AI or playing against users online.
     2.  We believe that Total Punch Control gives the user the most authentic and robust game play experience possible. But, at the end of day our consumers are the most important voices and what they say counts. If people want the choice to use buttons versus TPC, we’ll give them that choice.

Q4- Will there be other gameplay improvements that the community has asked about in any of these updates such as improvements to Online or Legacy Mode?

Mahar - Our first DLC pack was almost completed when the game shipped and we’ve squeezed in as many changes as we could. Not everything the community has asked for could make it in. I can promise the community that we’re on the FIGHT NIGHT Round 4 message boards constantly (you can find me posting under EA_MikeMahar) and we’re going to be offering more FIGHT NIGHT Round 4 updates as soon as we can this summer to address issues with Online, Legacy Mode, and more.

Q5- How often will the team be producing DLC updates for gamers?

Mahar - We have an aggressive plan to offer several updates for FIGHT NIGHT Round 4.  Though we can't make any official announcements, I can say the FIGHT NIGHT Round 4 Dev team is going to be around for a long time to support our community.

probably not going to tell us until later, but might as well throw it out there and ask...

any news on what the price of the DLC will be? :)

  • chrisphil1724 said July 07, 2009

Why are you going to kill the online game by letting people use button controls online? Why couldn't you just keep them off-line? Do you guy like the feeling of shooting yourself in the foot or something?

  • coufsax said July 07, 2009

Custom music entrance for ps3 users. We paid 59.99 for the game and we should get the complete product. Thank you.

  • potsie35 said July 07, 2009

    YES!

  • TreyIM2 said July 07, 2009

This is cool although I am fine with TPC. It's a great challenge to those who are up to it. Unfortunately, based on all the things I've read on the net, many don't want the challenge of disciplining your punching with TPC.

However, there needs to be a patch to fix the responsiveness. I noticed it in the demo, at times, and it is still present in the actual game. It's not a constant thing and can be quite rare, actually, but in my last fight during Legacy, I had MULTIPLE chances to counter at that great counter moment and the punch would just not come out. Like I said, it's usually very rare but for some reason throughout that particular fight, virtually from round 1 til the end. Thankfully, I have forever improving TPC skills that I ended up knocking that guy out, late. Tough fight, too.

  • BigJoe5434 said July 07, 2009

here is my take, i dont care if TPC is in or not, im a button guy, and i dont play online so that dont matter to me. i tried to learn the TPC i really did, but i found it was way to easy for me to be clumbsy with the sticks, when i say i suck at it...i really mean that. the buttons will make me a buyer just for legacy mode.

i did not whine and cry about the buttons not in the game, butim one of them guys if im used to something i hate change, but this will get me boxing fix so im happy and excited to hear that there in there, but even if they decided last minute that they were not going to put buttons its really no biggy. im not gonna whine or cry about it...i just walk the walk and not buy it. lol losing one buyer aint gonna hurt EA, especially since ill be getting NCAA Football 10, on tuesday. and Madden 10 when its realesed. but anyone enough of my rambling thanks for the button news and i will enjoy it.

  • Crubie said July 08, 2009

Are you going to be changing anything with the Heavyweight Championship, Middle weight Championship ect So that people are able to get the achievements! Cause as of right now the Guys that hold the 3 belts aren't giving them up and want 4,000MS points to even be able to fight them! And when you do fight them they cheat! Just curious if you are going to address this

  • EA_MikeMahar said July 08, 2009

    @ Crubie Re: Online cheating...

If you can provide specifics of how they are cheating it would be great.

You can PM me on the Fight Night Message boards and I'll look into it.

im glad that it sounds like this new team will be actively trying to improve the game as time goes on.  so many dev teams get paid and then never look back ;)

  • SolaGee said July 09, 2009

Why is EA acting as if everything is perfect with this game? EA have you told the general public about the ongoing issues with the game? Freezing? Causing Xbox consoles to RRoD? EA be honest with the general public as this game is nowhere close to perfect as they are trying to portray.

Here is a link to the forum on EA's site where there are several conplaints (including several of mine) about FNR4. EA do not act and try to brush these issues under the rug!

    forum.ea.com/.../248706.page

  • KingGeedorah007 said July 09, 2009

I would suggest anyone considering buying this game wait until the issues are resolved first.

These issues are unacceptable in a production environment and should have been fixed when they began happening with the demo. Quit blogging and fix them.

Also, the 'hair textures missing' issue was an issue with FN3. You've had more than enough time to fix that issue. I can't believe the same bug made it in to the FN4

Why EA? Why can't you do your job?

Why must you release buggy software and then plan to fix the bugs months after release?

Who do you think you are? Microsoft?

I loved FN3. I loved FN4 until it started freezing. I own 5 other EA games.

I will not be buying another until EA's dev team can prove their competency.

  • BigJoe5434 said July 09, 2009

seriously people quit complaining about the bugs, im sure they know about them, and are trying to fix them.

if yall think they are so damn incompetent, why dont you jump your happy asses on a plane and go show them how easy it is to fix the problem. get real

  • KingGeedorah007 said July 09, 2009

Quit complaining about people complaining about the bugs.

I'm sure you're right. They do know about the problems and are trying to fix them. Unfortunately it's at the wrong time. They should have been fixed BEFORE the release. It's sad that so many software companies have fallen into to the microsoft MO of releasing half baked products and offering fixes after the fact. If you have issues with the demo, then push back the release of the finished product until their fixed. Simple.

  • sk88z said July 09, 2009

Hey SolaGee and KingGeedorah - I don't recall anyone saying that this was a perfect game, though many have said that it's pretty close! :)

With regards to the issues you've commented on here and on the forums, the team is aware of the concerns some users are having and have already stated that they will be addressing them in the upcoming updates.  I would go far as to say not only did they produce a great game but have been actively working to keep it fresh not only with new content they continue to create but with fixes to bugs that didn't get discovered or resolved during testing.

It comes down to recreating the issue as many people have been doing the exact same thing and not experiencing the issues.  Once the issue is recreated (and we've asked users to send in their HD/consoles to help recreate...you are welcome to send us yours as well) the fix needs to be done along with testing around the fix to make sure no other issues occur with the change in code.  Following that, there is the approval process.  When it comes to moving ship dates that means moving a lot of other timelines as well so unfortunately it's not all that simple.

Just wanted to quickly educate on the way games are pushed out at launch as I totally agree that a game should not be released with bugs.  Reality is, the game (like most, if not all games) goes through rigorous testing and approvals yet still are released with the potential for a few rare issues.  I am just very pleased that we have dev teams that support the game to address these issues post-launch and, especially, are looking to continue to create and add to the game.

Don't worry...I won't say, "We're only human."  From working at EA for a few years I can honestly say that there are a few alien-types.  They are incredibly talented though so I'd be a little easier on them than saying that they're not doing their job.  The only wrong time to fix bugs is later.  Again, though, appreciate your feedback.

  • swillz13 said July 10, 2009

u guys do such good jobs on the fight night boxings games. thats why i think u guys should make a ufc game.

  • KingGeedorah007 said July 10, 2009

Thanks for the reply sk88z. I appreciate the insight.

I guess my perspective comes from working with applications in healthcare. Bugs are not acceptable in this environment as they equate to loss of revenue or reduced quality of care (sometimes to the point of injury or death). I have high expectations I guess. Then again, the software I'm referring to costs quite a bit more than the $60 I paid for FN4.

A game is, after all, only a game.

You don't really lose any revenue or kill anyone if you have bugs.

You just have to hear teh internetz complain :D

I'm excited for when I'm able play the game again. Good luck with the fix.

  • sirtoks said July 10, 2009

I think the game is a big jump from what they had in RD3, however, yes there will be bugs, most games (sports games) have them.  From baseball to basketball and hockey, the thing is they are going to try and fix all the problems that come up.  What they can't fix are guys who think they are all good in this game and cheat to win.  I am not sure if a fix can be made for noticing the head-butts faster and DQ'ing them faster as well, because this is a downer for me.

I could be kicking butt in the match, ready for a knockout, only to be head-butted to stay alive in the match.  I don't see illegal blows used in matches, not anymore anyway, so take them out of the game.  It is B.S to have the match shifted in another person's favour due to them giving you a low blow or Head-butt!

All in all, it is a great game and I was a button guy, but stepped up and practiced during the demo stages on the TPC, and it is a better choice to me.

Hope you all understand where I am coming from!

  • TreyIM2 said July 10, 2009

I just could never understand people who act like spoiled brats when it comes to video games (or anything else, for that matter), as if video games are going to be perfect, but I do understand that it takes maturity and understanding about things in life, in general. Constructive criticism, I understand. Baby balling, I don't....

sk88z - Thanks for putting that out there about what it takes to get games out. That helps to give people greater understanding who can't imagine the work it takes, on multiple levels, when creating a game then actually releasing it. Not to mention, it's called a schedule. U guys work with schedules and time lines. I understand that as well.

As for FN4, I can't get enough of it but to be honest, the NCAA 10 demo is eating me up a bit, as well, now a days. U guys in EA are really getting things back on track so my FN4 retail copy and the NCAA 10 demo are the only two games in rotation. Had to put my second go round in Infamous on hold. Lol. Keep up the good work.

  • Placebo PRS said July 11, 2009

Will those of us who actually prefer sticks be able to choose whether opponents use sticks only or buttons only? Because otherwise you've killed online for me, I have no interest in fighting against kids who can only use buttons and will obviously have no interest in boxing properly.

  • DobieG said July 11, 2009

LOL @ Placebo. "Boxing properly?" It's just a game man. There is not "properly" with a controller. Boxing properly is done in a gym, not on a TV so peoples complaints of the "game experience" are warranted.

One other thing, those joysticks (at least mine) cannot take the constant pounding of use without having to replace either the rubber or the controller itself. In FN3 in went through at least 15 controllers in those years.

This is not towards EA but basing a game on those joysticks rather than just using them occasionally does make for a constant hassle in returning (Best Buy warranty) those controllers. Enough with my rant. Looking forward to having a button control option again.

  • Placebo PRS said July 11, 2009

Yes it's a game, doesn't mean that those of us who love the sport can't try to box properly, I've been a boxing fan for over 25 years, I'd rather stab myself in the eye than repeatedly bash the same button over and over and over and over and over just to get cheap win after cheap win, you're welcome to play like that if you like, I just want to have nothing to do with you or your ilk.

  • WarSooie said July 13, 2009

My 360 RROD'd playing this. It froze up twice at the last loading screen. I turned it back on and got the RROD. I shipped it to MS today.

I have forwarded my issues as far as gameplay, but the RROD was unexpected as I hadn't had one in the two years I have had the console. I love the game besides the way it plays on WC mode.

  • Eat ur face off said July 13, 2009

I've been trying to use 'a USB camera' to add my picture through the create-a-boxer but it doesn't work.  From googling around, it appears to be a complaint going around and the solution is that you need the Xbox live cam and not just any USB camera.  Can someone confirm or deny this?

I really don't want to spend $40 on a webcam when I have a 10MP camera with a USB hook-up.  And I don't want to sign up for xbox live just to have my face in one game.

...with all of that said, I love this game so damn much.  Ridiculously enjoyable.

  • Eat ur face off said July 21, 2009

After playing this for many, many hours, I must point out some of the errors:

Well, you know about the constant freezing in Legacy Mode.  In addition to that, I am, almost 100% of the time, getting the wrong head showing throughout legacy mode for my character.

    Really annoying.

But really, the freezing this is happening to me CONSTANTLY.  It's rare that I can play more than 20 minutes without it freezing. And I've never had the demo on my HDD and I don't have any custom music or anything.  You just straight up released a buggy product... quite frusturating considering the price tag.

It's such a wonderful game...  having beta tested for various games, I find it absolutely ridiculous these freeze problems made it through with how predominate they are.  As well as the wrong character face problem.

  • WarSooie said July 24, 2009

How about the suction effect in the game? Don't say it isn't there, as I just took a beatdown from a guy who I could push away and threw 200 hooks in two rounds.  Never mind blocking, my gloves were non-existent. He didn't block, he just threw punches. Why add buttons when blocking doesn't even work because my gloves don't register with the CPU?

  • B1GD34L said July 27, 2009

I've been a fan of the series and have every game since knockout kings. I've realized that the only people who like playing with the Tpc are the ones who are new to the series. The TPC only is just plain stupid, think about it you are controlling 2 hands with 1 stick. It also makes it easier for anyone to just pick up the stick and play bcs it takes 0 skill to flick a stick back and fourth. Another thing that needs to be addressed is the online glitches. It's like the two fighters stick to each other when you try to push them off it does nothing, then the slipping/ bobbing and weaving issue.

  • charleyfbaby said August 01, 2009

    Excuse me Mike Mahar,

When creating a Boxer you assign them a "best punch". Beside the obvious boxer like Joe Frasier and Ali, how do we know what are the other boxers' best punch? Could you add a feature that allows for you to make a side by side comparison with a licensed boxer. For example I was creating De la Hoya by referencing Sugar Shane so i had to go all the way into fight now, look at his stats then go back to creating De la Hoya. Thanks in advance.

  • micdevious said August 05, 2009

First, I love the game and the upgrades are well appreciated. Now, Mike Tyson is under rated. 98 punching power? George and Lennex and punch harder than Tyson. I don't know if you've notice put George and Lennex are bigger than Tyson and giving them 99 punching power makes them punch boxers out alot easier. There's no way Tyson shouldn't have 100 rated punching power especally when he has 71 inch reach! Who would argue?! How many 1st round knock outs has George and Lennex had in their career? If Tyson land a clean shot, you're going down. It supposed to be (I thought) Tyson in his prime! NOT older Tyson! It's already bad enough you gave him a messed up hair cut, lol. Hell, at least you got him in the game. 2) Instant Replay, I don't know how much skill you have. Instant Replay in hard to work with. Could you make it like Madden Nfl where a circle on the floor of the ring can guide you to the boxers and lock on. The way it is now makes me dizzy and it could help me appreciate the graphics a lot better. 3) Legacy Mode. The created player at the near top of the rank are way too good. I can't even get my own boxer rating that high, even if I sore champion every time with 3 training sessions in 4 months, lol. Come On?! I can't tell you how many time I've encounterd a boxer that has 100 punching power in both hands, 100 hand speed, 100 foot speed 100 chin 100 blocking etc,  weighting like 250 pounds and be like 6'7. I this game made for me win or lose? At least help me get my rating up that high so I can compete! I wish you can make them more realistic to their fighting styles and not freaks. Thanks for listening!
