Live Tournaments Weekly: Week 2

Posted On: Jul. 17, 2009 12:27 PM EST By: raczilla 10 Comments

Hello, my name is Christian Brandt and I'm a Designer for Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 10. I'm starting up a weekly Live Tournaments blog to give everyone more insight on new additions, upcoming schedules, tournament winners, and tournament changes. More importantly, I would like to get your feedback so we can continue to improve Live Tournaments. I'm looking forward to hear what you think about some of our recent changes.

This is a big weekend for Live Tournaments starting today with Play the Pros UK Major Championship and the EA SPORTS Open. It will be exciting to watch how the 138th Open Championship pans out. Tiger finished at 1 over after his first round. Where are you standing after the first round? Remember that the UK Major Championship is played at Turnberry in Scotland, so tee times start at 1:30am Eastern Time Zone.

EA SPORTS Open Contest

The EA SPORTS Open featuring the Alisa Championship Course at Turnberry will be played on Tour Pro difficulty and restricts users to only play as pro golfers. Make sure to complete your 4 rounds before Tuesday 7/21/2009 at 2:00am for a chance at some great prizes. The top placed U.S. and UK player for each of the platforms will receive an autographed Tiger Woods game cover.

Visit www.tigerwoods10.com for U.S. rules or www.easports.co.uk/tigerwoods for UK rules.

Live PGA TOUR Seasons COMING SOON!

Starting next week, we will be rolling out the first Online Season. It will be broken into 2 different channels, EA SPORTS TOUR (Amateur low rating players) and the PGA TOUR (Tour Pro). It will consist of 4 week long events with its own season leaderboard. Join for your chance to be crowned the 1st ever Live Season Champion!

Live Tournament Updates

  • Pro golfer only tournaments have now been included in the daily rotation such as SEMI-PRO Tiger.
  • The attribute capped tournaments are back thanks to the patch. Currently PTP and Tour Pro events are set to 7 overall attribute cap.
  • Based on forum suggestions, the next few Extreme tournaments are on a single course. Do you prefer custom courses or a single course for the Extreme Tournaments?
  • All tournaments have been changed to 1 submission per round/event.
  • The new progressive payout structure is currently being tested by our QA team and will rollout to production shortly.

Tournament of the Week - SINGLE TRY - FURYK, X360

This was one of the closest and lowest scoring tournaments I have seen since launch. The tournament was limited to only using Jim Furyk on Tour Pro difficulty at Turnberry. Danielson1924 edged out the win by tiebreaker score. The top 4 players finished at -10, but Danielson1924's tiebreaker of 2,249 just defeated Rastafarian73 with a score of 2, 242.

1.      Danielson1924            -10       2,249

2.      Rastafarian73              -10       2,242

3.      HondaDude20            -10       2,198

4.      Schriney                      -10       2,179

5.      THEBEAST7000          -9       2,216

  • PS3 - newberry123, $27,269,207
  • X360 - Speed 427, $26,317,574
  • Wii - MAYLEE, $13,722,030

    Couple of questions:

    1) Why haven't we seen a SINGLE Tournament yet for Torrey Pines?

    2) There needs to be a single try event for Semi-Pro as well you can't just have it restricted to Tour Mode

    3) I would like to see an Extreme at Torrey Pines

    4) I do like these but you need to have another Tour Pro tourney where we have our maxed out stats as this is what most are used to.

    4) The first course of the Live Season should be Bay Hill

  • gsd9999 said July 20, 2009

For every single try tournament, there should be one that has no restrictions.

More tournaments where you can use your player at full power.

More tournaments that are not Tour Pro. I play mostly tour pro, but I also like to play with all the bells and whistles of the other modes.

It might be nice to have an AI playing partner when playing the live tournaments.

I'll comment in full on the forum, but I'm sick of the illegal pin placements that result in 4, 5, or 6 putts on some greens.  Expert PIN on #15 at Turnbury is a prime example.  Unless you slow the greens down where putts don't come back down the hill... so for an upcoming extreme tournament I'd simply like to see a course with gale force winds, but take some of the holes with stupid expert pins out.  And no 500+ yard par 4's with a 30mph headwind.

For the first week of live events how about anything that isn't Pinehurst No.2?

I like the pro golfer events that events things out a bit.  If you do attribute capping... cap the sweet spot on clubs as well so I'm not hitting a 3 wood into a green that someone with a 3rd party controller who has a 0% sweetspot is hitting a 4 iron into.  Ball flight on a 3 wood is horrible compared to an iron.

These courses I would like to see on TW 10 in this order.

    1. The Highlands  2. Central Park

    RANDOM

    • What course would you like to see used for the first week of the live season?

Start with easy courses and work your way to harder ones.

    • How do you feel about the Pro Golfer Only and Attribute Capping tournaments?

I think it makes the daily tourney's more interesting put you need to also have another regular tour mode that took the place of this tournament.

Would it be worth considering/possible breaking some event leaderboards into leagues.

EG: Weekly TourPro, leagues for players between -25 and -15, next league -10 to -15 players, next league -5 to -10 players etc. Would this not simply be a matter of subdividing current leaderboard. Alternatively each league consists of 150 people. League you compete in based on all previous rounds. Better you perform, more you keep climbing into leagues of people more your skill level.

This has the advantage of those who do not score -22's competing with similarly ranged skilled players and feeling as if they have a chance of winning tourney.

I really enjoyed the Tour Pro event with stats capped at 7.  Very nice.  This seemed to level the playing field quite a bit.

One Extreme tournaments - it would be nice to see some variety of factors that make it extreme.  Some tournaments could have extreme weather but allow the putting grid.  Some could have "normal" weather but without the putting grid.  And some could have both.  Just to mix it up a bit...

Overall though - keep up the good work.  I like what I'm seeing with the evolution of the live tournaments in regards to your attempts to level the playing field a bit.

We cant even play in tournaments were I can use my spin and power.  My rating is almost 3000.  The only ones I can play are tour mode , extreme , and some silly power capped tourney that is also a single try.  The ones were I can spin and power up on... have been the pro character tourneys were you use the real pros. Everyone online is having the same issue... so all they do is go shoot like a +26 or some horrible round so that there rating drops and there aloud to play in other tournaments.  I went and tried it today and just shot limited on every hole. I shot a +126.  I then checked my rating and to my suprise it actually went up 100 points.  So the rating system is definately messed up and doesn't work right anyways, sorry.  I understand that people like the power cap and the single try, thats fine those are fun.  But why are we forced to play tour mode...  Most of the players online play default which is now reffered to as "AMATEUR MODE". I guess you guys did that to make all the tour mode forum geeks happy.  Which is also fine... I understand.  And there is an obvious seperation between the two player types.  I meen tour mode guys play tour mode and default guys play default.  There are some like myself who enjoy both, but I would rather play default. I guess all I'm getting at is that there should be a daily tournament in "amatuer mode" so that evryone can play in it and all the best "amateur" players have a tournament to compete in without worrying about dropping there rating. I meen why am I aloud to play in a Semi-Pro tourney but not aloud to play in a PRO tourney. players are basically sacrificing a tour mode tournament (that they most likely don't care about anyway)just to play in a default tourney.

And I gotta mention the "one wind thing".   It's fine... everyone knows that a 1 wind is sometimes a 1 wind and sometimes it's a zero wind, and it usually plays like a cup if its blowing right or left.  So basically you can take dead aim at the pin and usually its going in the cup if you can hit it straight.  It's fine for online play But not for the tourneys. Everyone on the 360 can tell the difference between a 1 wind and a zero wind simply by looking at the trees.  But when your getting waves of "one wind not playing" on every hole of a tournament, avid players are going to shoot rediculous scores. espescially if they can restart.  Someone could shoot a really good score and have the lead all day and then in the wee hours of the night when you get those zero winds, any old joe shmo that knows what he's doing could easily come destroy there score with very little effort.  Prime example>> someone had a great score on the vj singh tourney it was up all day. and I know that they had some breezy winds.  I went to play it at about 2am and every hole was 1 wind not playing (zero wind). I beat his score by two shots on my 1rst try.  When I woke up the next morning my score had been beaten by 2.  Put it this way .. I holed out 6 shots from the fairway with vj and I never played with him before. Thats how easy it is for us.  So the wind should never be a one in a tournament unless its one wind for everyone all day.  Because now people wont even play the tournaments until late becuase they are waiting on one winds.  It's not fair to some one who shoots a good round with wind.

Ok almost done...I posted something about not being able to finish, submit , or restart a round on the tournaments with out going to my dash board everytime because the "retrieving details" loading box freezes evertime.  Well it still happens and I had to buy another account just to play in the tournaments.  And There are many many others who have the same issue and as a result have just given up on the live tournaments. This will also effect there entrys in contests.

One final issue that is basically the biggest issue since 07.  Please design the next game so that you can play and compete with a microsoft or ps3 standard controller. Everyone that plays online ps3 or x box 360 uses an after market controller.  I dont care who gets on here and says they play with a y axis or a ms controller.  There may be a few who do but believe me, 99% of the players all use a gamestop joytech or madcatz for the 360 and a hori turbo for the ps3.  especially if you want to compete in tour mode.  Making the sweet spot more sensitive will do nothing but push the sales of junk controllers, and turn away new comers.  TW08 and TW06 were the closest to perfection in this department.  Even then there was an advantage with an after market controller.  People online usually play on calm wind were you usually get a couple zero winds per 9 holes and if you can't hit it perfectly straight or should I say if your using a standard controller, these are holes your gonna lose on. It's really not fair to the newbs.

Thanks for Reading and hopefully Listening- bdubyas@yahoo.com

Please keep the attribute capped tournaments!!!!  They seemed to bring the scores down to a more realistic level.  That's what we need in the live tournaments and in the live seasons soon to start.

The weekly tournaments are ridiculous right now, the current tour pro weekly leader is -97.  That is in no way realistic. EA is supposed to be about "it's in the game", well guess what?  Those kind of scores aren't and never will be in the game.  It's almost an insult to golf in general.

I love this year's game with the appropriate settings to give a somewhat realistic experience.  I am having blast with the career mode, but one of the things that drove me to purchasing this year was the online play, particularly the live tournaments.  However, knowing that these are the scores I have to compete against make me not want to play.  I know I can add friends and keep up with their scores, but that's not what a tournament is about.  I don't join a tournament at my local golf course just to keep up with the golfers I'm paired up with in my foursome.  I want to compete against the field.

Maybe something like Arckon suggested would work.  I would love to compete in a league or tour with others that are comparable to me.

The trouble with bringing the scores down is this. If you make the game so hard that the top guys on the leader board were scoring say 10 to 20 under for a 4 round tournament, the average player would probably be scoring 20+ over.

Whatever the winning score level is, there will always be that sort of spread in the scores. If you struggle to compete against the current very low scores, you would most probably be just as far down the leader board as you are now.

Bringing the achievable scores down will not necessarily make it any easier to compete against the guys who spend hours a day on the game and know how to get the most out of the game.
