NBA LIVE 10: Swagga Like Us

Posted On: Jul. 25, 2009 2:35 AM EST By: sk88z 81 Comments

With the game's first look trailer dropping this week, NBA LIVE 10 Visual Games Designer Ryan Santos gives us a closer look at how the game has become more culturally relevant from visuals such as tattoos and authentic gear that players will be wearing, to the soundtrack that you can expect to hear in this year's game.

Swagga Like Us was the infamous hook made popular by T.I., Kanye West, Lil Wayne and Jay-Z. It kinda sums up how I feel about NBA LIVE 10. I’m proud to say NBA LIVE is back in a big way.

For me, coming back to LIVE has been a great experience. As an artist, I was part of the LIVE team for years. At the start of development for NBA LIVE 2005, I moved off the team to work on our NBA Street titles. Now 5 years later, I’ve been lucky enough to take on a role as a game designer on the game that started it all for me.

A huge focus for us this year was to make NBA LIVE more culturally relevant. That meant a lot of things; from the revamping the visuals, to new game modes, and of course an all new soundtrack. All the decisions we made around those areas always took into account the culture of hoops. That’s really a huge part of my job as a designer. To take inspiration from the things that relate back to basketball and incorporate it into my design. How great is it that my research consists of watching NBA games/highlights, reading bball mags, surfing sneaker blogs and listening to music. Today I wanted to touch on a few things that make NBA LIVE 10 more culturally relevant.

For the visuals, things like updating tattoos; to having the freshest player exclusive shoes in the game was a must. We’re also bringing back a grip of NBA throwback and holiday/cultural jerseys. It may not seem like a big deal to some people when a guy like LeBron is missing some tattoos and his away color signature Nikes, but to our core audience this isn’t authentic. It breaks the reality of sim sports titles when details like that are missed… not this year. When you boot up NBA LIVE 10, it’ll look like a completely new game, where players and stadiums will look as authentic as ever. Below are some images showing you examples of the various visual improvements.

Player likeness:

Up to date tattoos:

The newest kicks:

Throwback and cultural/holiday uniforms:

As you can see the game not only looks amazing, but brings back the culture of hoops to our game.  On that note, we’ve re-designed your experience upon entering the game for the first time. Last year, you were taken into an NBA practice facility…. “We talking about practice?” Don’t worry, the practice gym is still around, but we decided to take a fresh approach on the user’s first time in the game. Now you’ll enter an all new state of the art player’s gym. Internally we’ve dubbed it the “Hangar.” Much of the inspiration was taken from the Nike Commercial for the Air Force 1 25th anniversary campaign.

I also thought about the idea of these players building their dream gym. I looked at various architecture for direction on the interior of the space.

Here are some images to show you some of the inspiration and concept art:

Here’s the final look:

It went from feeling cold and empty, to warm and alive. The use of different materials gave us more contrast and interest.

In the Hangar, you’ll see the top players hanging out in cool gear like signature shoes and branded apparel. The soundtrack will be bumping while you practice some of the new gameplay mechanics. Overlays will appear to walk you through some of those new controls. We also kept the video screens on the walls to feed you ESPN content, and some video on demand content from our servers. Throughout the year we’ll be posting some cool videos for you to watch in the hangar. In addition, there will be dynamic on-screen messaging to keep you up to date on the latest NBA LIVE 10 news, like Dynamic DNA updates.

By now, most of you have probably seen our NBA LIVE 10 cover athlete reveal video:

It featured none other than superman Dwight Howard, along with the voice of hip hop icon Mos Def. Mos is one of the artists that came up many times when we started to talk about the soundtrack. With the help of our EA Worldwide Music Group in LA and our marketing team at EA Canada, we got Mos Def to do all of the voice over in the video. Using a voice as recognizable as his, was one of the elements that would really make this video tight. Obviously I’m a huge fan of his music, but more importantly, his influence on hoops. If you remember his song “Umi Says,” it was used in a Brand Jordan commercial for the Air Jordan XVI.

Then he went on to make a sick Converse commercial called "Invisible Game.”

He was the obvious choice when we started to brainstorm about the video. To me, his voice over is another detail that sets the tone for NBA LIVE 10. Stay tuned because you may just be seeing more of Mos Def and NBA LIVE 10.

Well that wraps up my first blog post for this year. In the coming weeks, I’ll be posting more stuff to show you just how far NBA LIVE 10 has come visually. Thanks for following our blog, and I look forward keeping you guys up to date on the latest NBA LIVE 10 insider info.

Peace,
Ryan

Those pictures of Carmelo Anthony are amazing. Is there any chance we could get a picture of Kobe Bryant? Last year his player model looked like a bird. Did you fix everyones faces?

  • totalownership said July 25, 2009

Nice stuff. Hopefully this will satisfy the Blogfiends who have been jonesing. Dudes sound like they about to sell off their grandma's VCR for a blog.

  • Ridikulas said July 25, 2009

Who else wants to see you be able to upload designs from NikeID into NBA Live 10 and put em on your players in the game? Now that would set you apart from 2k.

If you can create custom helmets and jerseys in NCAA, I don't see why you wouldn't be able to harness the same technology and do that in NBA Live.

  • Leyland said July 25, 2009

I think what you meant to say was M.I.A

  • chrisbigmeat said July 25, 2009

for the live 11 soundtrack why dont they call artist and ask them to a custom song for live. like they did in live 03 and 04

  • Jordan23Forever said July 25, 2009

    awesome work  Ryan

I love the detail of all the accessories, shoes, shoot quite honestly all of the detail is the bomb man!

  • basketball0725 said July 25, 2009

I looks like the soundtrack is going to alot better this year.

  • Teebeebee said July 25, 2009

Looks ok, nothing spectacular to me; Melo looks a bit smashed in honestly; still better than past versions though congrats

  • youngfaze01 said July 25, 2009

That's the best looking Carmelo model I've seen yet.

  • Xgamez12 said July 25, 2009

The Numbers on the front and back of Melo's jersey are the wrong color. C'mon your trying to sell us on authenticity and u miss that, good start. Got A long way to go.

  • warrior310 said July 25, 2009

    cool update.

how about we could just customize all the shoes they have in the game instead of having to upload from nike id?

    nba live will crush 2k!

  • warrior310 said July 25, 2009

xgamez, you think they dont know that?its a work in progress, marcus stephenson is a big basketball fan so he will know about it.

  • TreyIM2 said July 25, 2009

Nice pics. The graphics look great thus far. Can't wait to see more cuz I replayed the newest Live 10 trailer about 57 times. Lol. I look forward to seeing more and the soundtrack is cool, so far. De La is my fave so that piece of song got the most burn.

  • xBillieDaTruthx said July 25, 2009

Teebeebee melo looks far from smashed in. That is by far the best looking pic of melo in all my nba live years. That pic of melo and the other pic of lebron is the best looking graphic wise. Loving the new pratice gym or "hanger" as yall call it. Nice update and it looks way better than the old pratice gym. Im glad my boy wade finally switched to jordan brand and the shoes look nice too btw. I hope the intro on the game is somebody rapping while highlights of the game is being played like in the old days. That was the best.

  • warrior310 said July 25, 2009

here some songs i think they should add.P.S. i couldn't think about all the latest songs but there will be some from years ago lol.

HOWEVER,the fans still look the exact same as last year! Why is that? They look exactly the same.I really hope you`re going to update the fan models. But anyways looks good so far.Good job EA!

  • xxEastwick08 said July 25, 2009

loving the details and the tattoos...see why cnt madden have tattoos..but w.e. live's looking good..in the visuals but wat really matters is the gameplay..

  • SLAVEMASTER14 said July 25, 2009

Sup EA, props for the "Hanger" idea very original(still behind 2k in that department tho) I love to see you guys are getting the player models right it just makes the game seem real and that's what we all want. I've never really cared much about the shoes but any improvements are welcome. I love having the different jerseys it really makes playing alot of regular season games more fun, I remember having like 2-3 jerseys to pick from now you have 5-6 great replay value cuz I would like to tell my friends "...man I beat you with the los spurs." Overall great update it keeps me sane while there is no hoops. I do have some things I would love for you guys to listen to tho.

    1. Please oh please make Coaches matter. Coaches don't matter during games in Live and I really want them to. When your playing games in Live it doesn't matter if you have Phil Jackson coaching or Samuel Jackson and that's not right. Coaches should affect games while in progress not just improvements during the regular season in Dynasty mode. Make a coach like Phil Jackson have great "Panic Factor" Panic Factor would be for if your team is down alot of points or in a close game or is in a big game like the finals. If your coach does not have a good Panic Factor your team's ratings should drop little by little quarter by quarter if you are losing but if your coach has a good Panic Factor your teams ratings should go up. In game Coaching is a huge untapped thing in sim games, yeah you do all of the playing your self but you can't get anymore out of the game than what it has but like in real life a coach can pull a guy to the side and hype him up and get him to tap in to a new level for a few minutes. If we could have a "Motivation" factor for coaches in game that would be great and if a coach had bad Motivation the player would lose confidence. I just want to see Coaching used in a better way.

    2. I have said to this to my friends countless times and I'm sure plenty of the people in this blog have said this too...where's the Technical Foul system? For years I've hoped for a basket ball game where I can yell at a ref for a bad call and maybe get a T. EA please if you read this just hear me out come up with a way to argue and agree with calls. I just want a system where each ref has a "Temper Meter" and you can go up to the ref and talk during fouls and yell at the ref during live game play. You should have a choice of how to talk to a ref and there are 3. 1) Calm(calmly explain your case to the ref) 2) Aggressively(use a little more base and get your point across)  3) and everyone's favorite,YELL!(give him an earful and let him know how you feel about that call). If you do it just right the ref will call more fouls when that player has the ball, but do it wrong and the ref will let them hack at you all night. If you complain so much to where the ref's temper meter is too high you are in the "T zone" where any complaint done the wrong way could be a T.This would so make the game ten times more realistic and make me and my friends a lot happier.

Ok EA I have typed way to much but I would be deeply indebted to you if you would these 2 things. Thank you and keep up the good work "EA Redeem Team".

  • warrior310 said July 25, 2009

i had the same idea but i called it a temper rating.i think the meter would take away from the realism because it could be a distraction and they should have that stuff behind the scenes. so if a dude like ron artest (88 temper rating IMO) gets fouled,he should get upset and maybe talk trash.maybe as the game progresses, ron would do a foul to the guy unpurpose.

we are on the same page,i said both of those ideas of yours except that motivation factor and panic thing.

  • SLAVEMASTER14 said July 25, 2009

I don't think it will take away from the realism because T's and Flagrant fouls change alot of real NBA games. You can't tell me if a guy like Sheed or Ron didn't get T's they would have been in a lot more games and in theory won a lot more games for their teams. T's add up and can take some players out of the game or get some going. Like when Kobe gets a T it seems like it flips a on switch and then he kills and some has the reverse affect but it is a major part in NBA ball and I think its time to add it if we are truly aiming for REALISM. I thought people like you and I warrior would like to see some type of T system and I think a lot of people would too. Now my Panic Factor is just something I want but I hope EA likes it. I really just wanted to give coaches more to do in the game, cuz really they are just there, you do all the subbing(unless you put it on auto but it just follows the fatigue or lineup) I want a system that makes coaches more that just figures I want them to do things and make me want a better coach for more than just the Dynasty mode. I want coaching to be like it is in real life, a factor in why you pick a team to win. Thanks for commenting Warrior I like to hear what players like me think.

  • warrior310 said July 26, 2009

nooooo im talking about the meter, why would the angry animations take away from it?think about the madden rewind thing, that took realism away.(off the rewind topic)i think if the anger thing was just done randomly based on their rating,it would be better and it fits right in meaning no distractions,it just flows together.the meter is not a bad idea but do you want that to show up while you're playing the game or just done randomly base on the player's rating?

  • warrior310 said July 26, 2009

the panic factor should be for the cpu only because i think that we as a player would know when to call timeouts, change the scheme,etc...

it would be cool if we can have a streetball mode.you should have 1 on 1's to 5 on 5's.

for create a player, have more and better hair selections.

also for dynasty,i hate the fake players.they look dumb, please fix it.

  • SLAVEMASTER14 said July 26, 2009

Not random just when you complain about a call. Wouldn't you want the ability to complain if you think your getting cheated and just get a T cuz you getting beat the crap out of. I just want the Realism thing and T's are a huge part. The meter would be hidden until you complain and which ever ref you complain to their meter would show up above their heads, and when you get in T zone it will be red. I just want the T's to be in the hands of the Users not the computer, if you feel you got robbed on that last call you shouldn't have to wait for the computer to do it(which it might not). My Panic Factor is for the User to do something with the coaching, yeah we make subs and timeouts but that's not the only thing real  coaches do. I think there should also be a system during timeouts, your coach would tell you things going on in the game that they don't like or things that help you or you can improve on, and the better the coach the more and the better the information they give you. Things like that which help you in game. I don't mind if the CPU handles some of these but give the coach a more important role like in real life. I completely agree about the create a players and their whopped heads lol(hideous) and how about a career mode like superstar(cuz I'm tired of NBA 09 its terrible but they are the only ones with a career mode)

  • warrior310 said July 26, 2009

ok,the idea is fine.i just dont think that they're aiming for that right now, they are aiming for simple basketball but fun.i dont need extra things like that, imo.

Put this throwback in the game. You guys say you want to go back to the roots of the culture well this is the time around when hip hop was born. When I was a kid and the new stuff was growing. When sneakers became something more than a show you wore for gym class. When suede pumas were hot and converse were still relevant.

Definitely agree on the inconsistencies with the uniforms and everything, but it's nice to see Mr. Santos come through and mention that they're reading our feedback and that they have time to tighten those things up.

@EA_RyanSantos, how often should we expect to see new blog posts? Thanks bruh and hope you and the team keep up the good work.

it would be cool is we can scan a shoe and put it in the game from a camera.

  • warrior310 said July 27, 2009

ryan santos,i know you are an accessories guy but tell marcus what im saying if you read this.

they should have a highlight show every night in dynasty with animated announcers.

have various types of presentation like you show the team in the locker room, lebron listening to music, show the outside view of the arena ,show the fans etc...

  • warrior310 said July 27, 2009

  • stidy said July 27, 2009

Carmelo wears his headband backwards. And I hope Derrick Rose is as unstoppable off the dribble as he is in real life! Tell Synergy that wont leave his DNA until age catches up with him. And I hope that funny fast break where centers are outrunning entire teams after a made basket has been corrected. The screenshots look sweet but that first trailer release isnt very encouraging at all. I understand its a work in progress so I'll remain patient.

  • warrior310 said July 27, 2009

"EA Sports, if it's in the game, it's in the game" you gotta live up to that. I haven't heard anything about fixing the rules that don't get called; like traveling, double dribble, ect. Those being the obvious, you need to implement the new clear path foul rule. That way people with think twice about intentionally fouling on the fast break. I agree with the Tech fouls too.

Also up date the shot clock, they don't use that rubik's cube any more. and make Dwight Howard be able to break it every once in a while.

The sound track is weak, except for the Zion I track(I'm from the bay)

and don't do anything warrior310 says.

Why do 2k fanboys post disrespectful comments here if it's obviously Live? No lives.

  • pepp23 said July 28, 2009

Get off 2k's nuts! What....are you doing PR work for them or something. You havent even played either game yet. So you know nothing about whether live has improved at all. Mike Wang made 2k what it is today, so whatcha think he'll do to for Live's future.

Live actually has more power under the hood as far as code is concerned anyway. The graphics poop on 2k's graphics. EA also has more money and resources to its disposal than 2k. If the gameplay is on point which has been their main focus this cycle....the czar will be singing a differnt tune, and 2k is in trouble. Ya see, what you fail to realize is most of 2k's followers were originaly supporters of live and then live 07 made them switch over. So your fans of the game were never really fully your fans...in their hearts they really want to see live get back their swagg...ya see we actually leased them fans to you.

This years gameplay will shine a light on live and turn the night light on for 2k. So what im sayin is come on home. This year might be special and you dont want to be left in the dark.... you feel me. Imo 2k was a good game but it had a lot of problems as well last year. The czar will tell you that. in short..... before you come in here judging nba live 10, play it first before you start coming in a nba live forum talking greezy! Cause you might get owned and get ya lights turned out!...period!!! Getcha weight up 2k zombie!

  • terrellnba23 said July 28, 2009

nba live 10 is gonna be awesome.i hope that drose is gonna be unstoppable on the game then they will have to double team him every time he gets the ball.and nba 2k 10 is havin new info today

  • youngfaze01 said July 28, 2009

This year Live "WILL" take it home. 2k is not a SIM game to me, it plays like an arcade game. I know why people like it so much, because it's so damn easy to score and every player is overrated to the max. First of all, they make LBJ crash through the defenders no problem. Second of all, Kobe, I'm speechless.......next is Ray Allen, OMG, this man cannot miss a 3 pointer in this game with double-team. It's rediculous. Live will reclaim it's title.

  • goindumb said July 28, 2009

my bad for offending the gay community

ask n e 1 who plays the game if they would rather see howard dunk and break the backboard/shot clock or watch lebron change in the locker room like you do.

  • prhiam said July 28, 2009

Somebody needs to get 2K10kobe out of here. I know it's not the policy of EA to ban people for talking about another game but this is rediculous. Look you are not coming in here and convincing people to "switch". I think it's safe to say that there were a number of these people who owned 2k9 last year. I was one of those people. However Live's art style is miles ahead of 2k whose players look like they are still running on PS2. I would like the better looking game to be more fun to play. I check these blogs out for two reasons, to see if this years game is worth the purchase, and because 2k is too lazy to run a blog spot highlighting anything about their game. Why do you think they are hiding their game? Because it doesn't really look that good?

2k9 is animations that is the only thing they can boast. Their ratings system is old and broken. Their gameplay is easy to get used to and you can own a team with one player, especially if they are rated highly (also easy to get because the ratings system has about 5 categories). Also the controls do feel a bit arcadish, I can't help but feel it's like joystick and button pad and not much skill or thought to making moves or plays. If there was a second positive to the game is that it does look good in motion and they have a few nice features like editing the prospects and changing teams. But 2k fanboys are pathetic morons, they infect any comment board and boast a game they have not seen or played is the greatest game ever made....sad.

Seen the 2k10 screenshots of the Combine...you would think it was 2k9 all over again. Not impressed 2k. Your time is ticking to give up the throne to Live. Tick-toc.

sk88z - I have to admit that I don't understand the change from the gym in 09 to the Hangar, this year. The gym was far more realistic and, although I only played the demo, it was cool having the 4 courts that u could actually switch to just by walking over to it. Maybe that took up too much code and you guys needed to free up the code and make just a full court. If that is the reason, I get it, but if was done to just be 'cute', I don't get it.

The game looks great, but I have something else to say. Basketball and hip hop are not synonymous, and as a (black) non-hip hop kid, we'd appreciate not being drenched in the same crap that's being played non-stop on hip hop stations. The crap about drinking and throwing money around and hoes and ***.

I can't help but notice on the screen shot when it seem like Carmelo is about to run I can tell the person he run pass is D. Wade. Why does D. Wade have on Jordan when its clear he's in team Converse not tryin to hate but this isn’t authentic.

  • jmacj134 said July 28, 2009

My bad I just read he jump ship

  • theking1211 said July 28, 2009

yup he's no longer with converse,ea knows what they are doing this year.

  • youngfaze01 said July 29, 2009

MorganFreeman, EA has never brought in that kind of music about throwing money and hoes & ***. They have brought music that is universal and relative to the game of basketball. And if you do have a problem with the music, you do have an option to turn it off in the settings.

  • youngfaze01 said July 29, 2009

good thing you brought that up. One of the Live producers said they have a new feature in the game, talking about Dynasty w/ more than one person I recall.
