Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 10 Live Tournaments Weekly: Week 3

Posted On: Aug. 6, 2009 12:14 PM EST By: raczilla 16 Comments

Hello Tiger Community,

This past weekend, Tiger Woods had another victory at the Buick Open. Do you think he can pull off back to back wins at Firestone this week? You can compete against Tiger Woods along with the rest of the field in the World Golf Championships at the Firestone Country Club starting today. It has also been a big week for Live Tournaments with the addition of Tiers and Total Player Leaderboards. Check below for more details.

Look out for the NEW DLC course, COG HILL! We are running an early bird special with a 33% off discount for the first week. Remember that the third round of the FedEx Cup Playoffs is played at Cog Hill this year, so get your practice in now. The next patch will also be available soon. It will add a few new options to Live Tournaments. We will now be able to setup tournaments where everyone will have the same sweetspot percentage on their clubs and the ability to turn off chipping/pitching on the green. As always, please feel free to let us know what you think about some of our recent additions.

Live Seasons Update

The first Live Tournaments Season is in full swing with the second week just finishing up today. The third week in the season will be played at Torrey Pines. CSeidz420 is currently in the lead for the EA Sports Tour on Xbox 360 and STONE-COLD330 is standing at the top of the leaderboard for the PGA Tour Season on PS3. Which course would you like to see as the final week for Season 1?

Live Tournament Updates

• Live Tournament Tiers are now available. It consists of ten tiered tournaments plus one tournament for brand new players. The Tier Tournaments now allow players of the same skill level to compete against each other. For example, tier 2 is limited to players around 1,200 thru 1,300 skill rating and Tier 8 is limited to higher skilled players around 1,900+. This has created better competition throughout the tournaments and we would like to thank you for all your feedback related to Live Tournaments.

• Total Players that have participated in an event can now be viewed at the top of each Live Tournament leaderboard.

• NEW Cog Hill DLC available on 8/6/09, look for upcoming Live Tournaments!

• Play the Pros Amateur will continue this week with the World Golf Championships Am.
• We recently had some great player created Extreme tournaments by LTisacharger, cccgolfer08, and DIhardUNCFAN. Submit your course below or on the forums and you might just see it as the next Extreme Live Tournament. Thanks!

Tournament of the Week – The OPEN – TIGER Only, Xbox 360

The Tournament of the Week came down to the tiebreaker score. The Open was limited to only using Tiger Woods on Amateur difficulty at Oakmont CC. Buckaye and SCUF MIKE were tied for first at 23 –under ,but Buckaye’s hole in one gave him the lead in tiebreaker points. The rest of the top ten finished at 22 –under. Congratulations to the top three finishers who made this the Tournament of the Week!

1.    Buckaye        -23     2,727
2.    SCUF MIKE        -23     2,385

I really like the idea of the new Tiered tournaments but I think that using the skill ratings for determining the tier groups is not very good.  What is currently happening with this approach is that the winners of each tier are all shooting the approximate same scores as all the other tiers.  In other words the winner of Tier 3 may have a score of -20 while the winner of tier 10 has a score of -23.

I think a better approach would be to use scoring average instead of skill rating.  But the scoring average would need to be based on the same mode of play.  In other words, if you're only going to offer amateur tournaments in the tiers (I wish you'd add Tour Pro as well) then the scoring average should only be from rounds played on the amateur setting and shouldn't be impacted by rounds played on Tour Pro level (or Extreme tournaments for that matter).

Christian, I think the sweetsot restriction and the ability to turn off green chipping and pitching are both positive strides!  I'm hoping the patch will also restore the putting view cameras, presentation cameras, and putting meter removal ability to what we have in Live Tournament play.

The Tier tournaments are not in my playlist.  I only play Tour Pro, so they are foreign to me.  I don't think enough people play Tour Pro Live Tournaments to make it practical to establish Tiers.  Even three tiers might stretch the fields a bit thin in Tour Pro.

I love the total players information.  It helps me get an appreciation for the scope of the event.

I shot a 64 at Cog Hill with average greens, fast fairways, and medium rough with hard pin placements and live weather (which today was faily timid).  I played very well to achieve that score though.  I'd have a hard time breaking 76 under conditions that it would be set for an extreme tournament.

    • What holes would be good for a custom course on an upcoming Extreme Tournament?

Would love to see this as a 4 day weekly tournament rather than just a daily.

    1) Wentworth Hole 1 Par 4

    2) TPC Boston Hole 2 Par 5

    3) Hazeltine Hole 3 Par 5

    *4) Doral Hole 4 Par 3

    5) Bethpage Hole 5 Par 4

    *6) TPC Sawgrass Hole 6 Par 4

    7) St Andrews Hole 7 Par 3

    8) East Lake Hole 8 Par 4

    9) Oakmont CC Hole 9 Par 4

    10) Pebble Beach Hole 10 Par 4

    11) Pinehurst No. 2 Hole 11 Par 4

    12) Firestone CC Hole 12 Par 3

    13) Torrey Pines Hole 13 Par 5

    *14) TPC Boston Hole 14 Par 4

    15) Harbour Town Hole 15 Par 5

    16) Bay Hill Hole 16 Par 4

    17) TPC Sawgrass Hole 17 Par 3

    18) Hazeltine Hole 18 Par 4

*If you're willing to insert DLC from the 2 real world DLC Courses make Hole 4 Spyglass Hill Hole 4 Par 4, Hole 6 Cog Hill Hole 6 Par 3 and Banff Springs Hole 14 Par 4 for the existing Hole 6 and Hole 14 choices.

    • Do you like the new Tier Tournaments?

In theory yes in practice no.  I'd rather they were tour pro, but I'd settle for a mix of tour pro and amateur.  I'd also like to see your player rating have more rounds incorporated into the rating to make it so you can't go play in the open event one day shoot +128 on purpose and find yourself in Tier 1.  Rather than the system remembering your last 4 rounds or whatever it remembers maybe it could remember your last 10 rounds?

    • Do you like the new “Total Players” view on the Live Tournaments leaderboard?

Absolutely love it.  Can't believe it wasn't there in the first place, but it gives me a greater sense of pride knowing what percentile I came in at the end of the day.

    • Which course would you like to see as the final week for Season 1?

NOT Pinehurst.  I'd like to use my vote to vote against that rather than for anything else.  Though if you'll still take a vote in favor of something I'd like to vote for Spyglass Hill.

    • What’s your best score on Cog Hill so far?

    50

Christian said, "The Tier Tournaments now allow players of the same skill level to compete against each other."  The intentions and theory are good but in practice it's not working.  As long as players can intentionally sandbag to get into lower tiers, even to get into the beginners tournament, players in the various tiers are still not matched against similarly skilled players.  True, they may be matched according to skill points but the points are being manipulated by dozens of better skilled players which takes away any chance the lesser skilled can compete against their own kind.

The problem is though it isn't youre still getting people being put in Tiers they shouldn't due to people who ruin tournaments by intentionally making a bad score so the next day they can ruin a lower tier.

I'd love to see either Spyglass OR Oakmont as the Final Weekly.

Only played Cog the once today on Tour but shot 53 which isn't bad for a first effort.

I really like the Tier system.  I'm improving, but man it was demoralizing to get destroyed.  I haven't checked if you've implemented the tier system in the lobbies..although likely not.    I just like being competitive, it is definitely most fun when you 'have a shot'.    Tour Pro Tier system would encourage me to play more tour pro for sure !  but then we're talking about a lot of tournaments but that's fine with me.

just grabbed cog hill haven't played it yet.

I'm not that good at the game, but I'm addicted to playing (also to real golf).    It's fun because I'm not that good.

    • Do you like the new Tier Tournaments?

Yes, absolutely. Gives me a chance to be more competitive.

    • Do you like the new “Total Players” view on the Live Tournaments leaderboard?

    Yes.

    • Which course would you like to see as the final week for Season 1?

Unfortunately I haven't participated up to now although I would like to. But the Amateur is limited to skill rating 1,000 and I'm not competitive in Tour Pro. As I'm struggling between 1,300 and 1,500 I would like to see a Season for that range too or at least an open Amateur season.

  • JCauthen04 said August 07, 2009

Christian, I see that the update didn't fix the default putting camera height in online multiplayer to chest level; it's still at "knee-high" level.  This adversely affects the putting game to the point that I find it mostly unplayable.  A consistent, golfer's eye perspective is critical to getting the most out of the Precision Putting experience, especially meterless Precision Putting.

I don't understand how we have such a disparity between the default putting camera in offline and Live Tournament play versus multiplayer online?

I would have liked to have seen the no chipping/pitching feature carried over to all online games and not just Live.At least for Tour mode.

For the amount of times it would really need to be used compared to the amount of times it's abused I think it would be worth it.

  • JezII said August 17, 2009

I personally like the tier system but think its open for abuse. I would recommend that you need to post a minimum number of rounds ( say 8 ) to calculate your entry tier. The tiers should then act as sort of league tables with the top 10% and the bottom 10% moving up and down the tiers or leagues. I think this would create more of an interest in moving up a tier and not just tanking a round to drop a tier so as to win a tournament. You could then have a end of season tournament for the top couple of tiers with a season champion award.

I find it a bit silly when your playing in tier 2 and  competing again players that can shoot -23 on a round. Clearly they are not tier two calibre players. This clearly shows that players are 'frigging' the system and only serves to demoralise and disincentives less able players.

way to much tour pro. wots the point of mastering all the trick shots if you cant use them, extreme is ace good fun but if you are like me colour blind it is impossiable to putt without green grid (cant see the shading green looks flat)can anybody let me know why my clubs never make distance shown, this is a big problem for me its not just in tournaments but in club tuner as well. tier system is good.last round has to be the predetor. total players good.way to many very fast green speeds. why do i have to use new putter system, the old classic putter works fine
