  • Wimbledon 2009: The Battle of the Andy's

Andy Roddick has made it to the semi finals and will be facing Andy Murray on July 3rd ; Roddick is giving us a view from the locker room at Wimbledon for EA SPORTS Grand Slam Tennis

    Halfway point (June 27)

"Although I’ve taken in a few games when my American friends have been playing, I’ve tried to focus on my tennis and next opponent as well as relaxing where possible. It’s taken a trip to London but I’ve just discovered America’s Got Talent (apparently Jerry Springer is all sensitive now....come on!) and I went to see The Hangover which is hilarious!

Off the court, I seem to have answered more questions about Rick Astley and Twitter this week than I have tennis. Who would have known there were so many Astley fans out there?! I was also shocked on Thursday night after my match when I learnt of Michael Jackson’s death. It’s sad and surreal. He was a complete revolutionary and will be missed."

Week 1 draws to a close (June 28)

"So the first week’s over and it’s been a good one for me so far. If you’re still in the tournament at this stage, it’s always good news! I’ve faced some tough opposition but I feel like I’ve been hitting the ball well and I’m now looking forward to what will hopefully be a good rest of the tournament. The positive thing is that I’ve been winning but I still feel that I could be returning a little better and breaking serve more so there’s definitely room for improvement going into week two.

Andy Murray’s showed what a great player he is this week. The commotion that has surrounded him is just a sign of his success and is testament to what he’s achieved so far."

    Week 2 dawns (June 29)

"My opponent on Saturday was Jurgen Melzer who's always a tough game...and this was no exception. He's super talented, has won the juniors here and always likes to come forward so it was great to get through a tough game like that. At one stage, I felt a bit of rain when I was out on court and thought Jurgen and I might be the first two to play under the roof. While it would be nice to be part of such a historic moment, my main concern was to get the match finished and get off before the rain set in. I'm happy to leave it to someone else to be part of the famous two as long as I keep winning!

Next up today is Tomas Berdych. He's streaky and rarely middle of the road. Right now you expect to get the best of him with the way he's been rolling through the tournament. He's got weapons. He can serve big and hit big from the baseline. It's just a matter of trying to weather what he's bringing and hopefully that’ll be enough to see me through."

    Only 8 left (June 30)

"It’s now 120 gone, only 8 left and I get to play another day! How cool is that?! I’m having so much fun...I love playing here and it really is an honour. Against a tough opponent, I played probably the best I have so far yesterday but it’s certainly not going to get any easier going into my quarter final.

I’m up against Hewitt and everything is a fight with Leyton. He’s a sound as anybody out there, solid on both sides and you’re never going to get on top of him mentally. We’ve always had great matches – including at Queen’s a couple of weeks ago – so I know I’ll need to be at my best again if I’m to get through. In terms of preparation, it’s still about routine, routine, routine! I’m going to have a hit with Tommy Haas this afternoon, relax this evening and tomorrow it’s tennis time again!

Oh, and how could I nearly forget?! Rick Astley’s now one of top trending topics on Twitter!"

Andy Roddick continues his winning streak at Wimbledon after he defeated Igor Kunitsyn of Russia

"So I go through. You know it was comfortable most of the time. There were a couple of things here and there but overall, it was all right. A win is a win. The set I got broken, I had numerous break chances. I knew I was getting the better of him. I knew I was getting a lot more looks at his serve than he was at mine. I feel like I had him up against it in the third set but didn’t convert break points. He got one and converted to make it a dogfight. But I’m glad I played well in the fourth set. Next up for me is Jurgen Melzer after he beat Benjamin Becker."

Andy Roddick continues his blog for EA SPORTS Grand Slam Tennis from Wimbledon, giving us a view from the locker room.

"I felt pretty good on Tuesday in my four-set victory against Jeremy Chardy on Centre Court. It was difficult to get rhythm as he went for big first serves and just putting returns in the court. I think my experience helped out there. Little things like going out on Centre Court, it’s not going to be my first time.

I felt like I got a couple of early breaks, maybe he was a little more nervous than I was. Subtle things like that help. At this point in my career, I’m not going to face many new scenarios so maybe that’s a good thing. I went down once today but that’s the nature of a grass court. But it’s fine and they certainly know how to take care of the courts here.

With Grand Slams, you normally don’t play a match every day so It’s really important to be able to switch off and find ways to unwind between games. We’ve got EA SPORTS Grand Slam Tennis in the house and we’re enjoying chilling out and playing on that. Other than that, I’ll just be watching Wimbledon like everyone else. The tournament always has great games from the first round right through to the final and this year is looking like it will be no different. It is a shame Rafa had to pull out as he is the defending champion and always great for tennis to have him out there but there’s still a lot of world class players left in the draw for me to keep my eye on. Roll on Thursday!"

Update: Roddick went on to face Igor Kunitsyn of Russia and defeated him in another 4 set match (6-4, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2). Up next for Roddick is Jurgen Melzer of Austria. Last year, Roddick lost out in the second round to Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia. How do you think will fare this year?

  • Andy Roddick Blogs for EA SPORTS

Andy Roddick blogs for EA SPORTS Grand Slam Tennis from Wimbledon, giving us an insiders view on the greatest tennis tournament.

I always enjoy the build up to Wimbledon and this year’s been no different.

I’m staying in a house in Wimbledon along with my wife, agent and coaches and it’s nice to have a base to relax and do normal everyday things like cook your own food and go to the supermarket.

I think it’s important to maintain the same routine for every tournament and that’s what I’ve tried to do over here. The slight ankle injury I picked up at Queen’s has cleared up well so I’ve managed to stick to my usual regime of hitting a few balls every day and relaxing as much as possible.

Tomorrow brings my first round and I can’t wait to get out there and start competing. I’ve been drawn against Jeremy Chardy who, for those of you who don’t know, is a very talented young French player and I’ll need to be on the top of my game from the very start to make the second round.

    Wish me luck!

Update: Roddick defeated Jeremy Chardy of France in 4 sets (6-3, 7-6 (7-3), 4-6, 6-3) and went on to defeat Igor Kunitsyn of Russia in another 4 set match (6-4, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2). Up next for Roddick is Jurgen Melzer of Austria. Last year, Roddick lost out in the second round to Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia. How do you think will fare this year?
